Books, movies, biz & life lessons: a look at how top bosses spend their ‘me’ time FAVOURITE BOOK: ‘Raavan: Enemy of Aryavarta’ by Amish Tripathi. FAVOURITE MOVIE: ‘Uri: The Surgical Strike’. I was happy to know about the intelligence we have in our army. FAVOURITE SERIES: ‘The Haunting of Hill House’. It is a very well-directed series. BIGGEST BUSINESS LESSON: It was actual- ly something I always knew, but that business mantra of mine got reaf- firmed this year — busi- nesses should never be built on borrowed money. BIGGEST LIFE LESSON: Never be flexi- ble with your goals. If your plan doesn’t work, change your plan. But never change your goal. SUSTAINABILITY STEPS: Banning plastic bottles from my house and from all Dabur and Lite Bite offices. Also, we have initiated a programme where we are encouraging every employee to col- lect 10 kg of plastic waste, which is picked up by our team and sent for recycling. LIFESTYLE CHANGE: I have always led a disci- plined lifestyle, but one change I introduced this year was: ‘Do not touch iPad/phone once home.’ MILLENNIAL LINGO YOU PICKED UP: There are actually two new words I learnt from my kids. The first is ‘bruh’, which, I was told, is the shorter form of brother or bro. The second, which is more of an SMS lingo, is NAC — short for ‘not a chance’. MEMORABLE MEAL: Wild boar pasta at La Giostra in Florence, Italy. RESOLUTION FOR 2020: Volunteer and give more to charity. While I have been supporting some charities, I intend to take some time out and volunteer in some of the community development initiatives that are undertaken by Dabur. ANITA DONGRE FOUNDER, HOUSE OF ANITA DONGRE FAVOURITE BOOK: Measuring What Counts by Joseph Stiglitz, Jean-Paul Fitoussi & Martine Durand strengthens my belief that companies and countries must focus on sustainability and the environ- ment, not just on profits. BIGGEST BUSINESS LESSON: Edit. Edit. Edit! Whether it is the buying we do for our stores or the unnecessary things we allow ourselves to get dragged into — edit! Keep life simple and focus on the things that matter. FAVOURITE SERIES: The only show I watch regularly is ‘Young Sheldon’. I love his character. Another brilliant show was ‘Made in Heaven’. It was well-written and styled, but more importantly, it reflected India in all its 21st century juxtapositions. BIGGEST LIFE LESSON: Cut out the clutter. Right from your wardrobe to what you do, watch or engage in, choose mindfully. I made a conscious attempt to use every minute doing what I like and it has been a pretty good year so far. SUSTAINABILITY STEPS: We have built partnerships that make sure we use sustainable fabrics, especially for AND and Global Desi. We have opened a fifth training cen- tre to contribute to an economy led by financially inde- pendent women. What we are most proud of, though, is substituting all our plastic packaging with biodegradable plastic. MEMORABLE MEAL: Benaisha, my daughter-in-law, made me a home-cooked Sindhi meal from scratch. She took the trouble to selecting my favourite dishes, learnt to make them and then presented me with a full meal all the way in New York. And she is a Parsi — this wasn’t the food she grew up with. MEMORABLE DESTINATION: We shot in the Rann of Kutch and it was breathtakingly beautiful. LIFESTYLE CHANGE: I’m good at early bedtime and dinner at 5:30 pm and exercising regular- ly. This year, though, I made it a point to spend more time with loved ones. MILLENNIAL LINGO YOU PICKED UP: Early in the year, Benaisha saw I was delighted when an evening event got cancelled and she said I have JOMO (joy of missing out). RESOLUTION FOR 2020: Do more of what makes me happy. Big Shots & Their Big Likes FAVOURITE BOOK: ‘Chocolates on the Pillow Aren’t Enough’ by Jonathan Tisch. Jonathan is the chairman of Loews Hotels & Co and one of the most respected leaders in travel and hospitality in the US. This is a quin- tessential read for anyone working in a consumer-facing business. BIGGEST BUSINESS LESSON: For any business, it is a core learning that growth should always be optimised through the means of sustainability. At Oyo, it has and will always be about growing right versus growing fast. We are tirelessly working towards building a busi- ness that has strong business economics and financial health. BIGGEST LIFE LESSON: There will never be a substitute for perseverance and hard work and you should continue to solve the problem. It might look like a tough journey ahead but this is also the best ride you will steer to reach your ultimate goal. Be fearless. SUSTAINABILITY STEPS: Across Oyo buildings in India, we follow many environment-friendly practices. In SilverKey and Townhouse buildings, we use fixed, large soap and lotion dis- pensers instead of small plastic bottles. In our flagship build- ings, we use glass bottles instead of plastic ones. In Collection O, we use key cards to automatically turn off electrical devices when not in use. LIFESTYLE CHANGE: Last year, I ensured I started my day early and went through emails and WhatsApp messages from teams from across India, the US, China and Europe. This helped me in assisting them with strategic decisions and led to effective time management. I also started doing yoga to beat the pains of travel. MEMORABLE MEAL: At Dakshin in New Delhi. It was keerai kootu and elaneer payasam. MEMORABLE DESTINATION: I got the opportunity to visit Thiruvananthapuram and Kovalam and it was an enthralling experience. RESOLUTION FOR 2020: To dream! Plan and focus on doing a few things and do them well to achieve the best results. RITESH AGARWAL GROUP CEO, OYO HOTELS & HOMES FAVOURITE BOOK: Red Rising’, a sci-fi series on humans setting up a new type of society in Mars and the repercussions of that. FAVOURITE MOVIE: ‘What’s My Name: Muhammad Ali’. BIGGEST BUSINESS LESSON: It’s easy to miss the for- est for the trees, even if you are constantly aware. Designing a map for yourself, every year, can help orient yourself in the forest. Going between big picture and everyday life is a science and an art. The most important lesson I learnt was how to do this. BIGGEST LIFE LESSON: Recognising that my greatest strength is the people I bring in to my life, both at work and at home. SUSTAINABILITY STEPS: I grew a terrace garden. I have stopped using plastic bottles and utensils at home and work. At Vue.ai, we have had a fantastic year working with brands across the globe, which use our products and our data platform to make their businesses more sustainable. MEMORABLE MEAL: At our very own East Coast Road in Chennai. It was the only weekend off we took in 2019 — with the kids. The chai and molaga (chilli) bajji there were the real bomb I needed to break a series of exhausting weeks. LIFESTYLE CHANGE: We have filled our home with board games and strategy games. We play every day, with kids, with cousins, office folks. It rewires the brain in interesting ways. RESOLUTION FOR 2020: Enjoy the process of unmaking and making myself, my team, my company, my family. In 2020, I’m going to be focusing on version 2.0 and what that looks like for the next phase — the next five-year marathon we are aiming for. MILLENNIAL LINGO YOU PICKED UP: Issa Mood. AMIT BURMAN CHAIRMAN, DABUR INDIA FAVOURITE BOOK: ‘Creative Selection’ by Ken Kocienda. It’s an eye-opener. FAVOURITE MOVIE: I liked ‘Ford v Ferrari.’ I like cinema where people are forced to find ways out of corners. FAVOURITE SERIES: I can’t commit myself to a full series of anything, but I enjoyed ‘Our Planet’ and I dip into Zomato Originals now and then. BIGGEST BUSINESS LESSON: To keep trying and the answer does emerge. Sometimes in small steps that lead to a fundamental lesson. As we learnt through small but additive steps to cut costs, we learnt to grow impactfully as well. This is now a part of our everyday culture. BIGGEST LIFE LESSON: Stay open to all sorts of perspectives around you and keep learning. SUSTAINABILITY STEPS: I try my best to avoid plastic usage. More than two years ago, Zomato was the first food app in India to actively introduce the no-cutlery option and we have been constantly pushing to reduce our carbon footprint. In 2019, we introduced biodegradable packaging options to our restaurant partners to encourage less plastic waste. MEMORABLE MEAL: It is really about enjoying my favourites — butter chick- en, a good naan, some biryani. MEMORABLE DESTINATION: I love Prague. I have a favourite hotel and a favourite room that overlooks cobbled streets. It feels like home away from home. LIFESTYLE CHANGE: Compared with 2018, I am lead- ing a more balanced lifestyle — I’ve been reading more, eating healthier, doing things I love and have been more focused than ever before. A good lead- ership team lets me have that balance. MILLENNIAL LINGO YOU PICKED UP: Although I hear it all around me, I rarely use them. Call me old school but I prefer more traditional usage. I still type out full messages and write long emails. RESOLUTION FOR 2020: To fundamentally commit to doing everything Zomato and I can do to get as close to our carbon neutral goals as possible. FAVOURITE BOOK: ‘Educated’ by Tara Westover. It is a testament to the raw, transformative power of the human spirit and instinctive intelligence. FAVOURITE MOVIE: ‘The Two Popes’. It is just brilliant. FAVOURITE SERIES: ‘Chernobyl’. It was history and it was the future. BIGGEST BUSINESS LESSON: If you have good people working with you, your business will thrive and your work will be meaningful. BIGGEST LIFE LESSON: Life is unpre- dictable. Respect every moment. MEMORABLE DESTINATION: Lodi Gardens, New Delhi. SUSTAINABILITY STEPS: We stopped using plastic bottles in our office, and Penguin Random House India moved to printing on recycled paper. LIFESTYLE CHANGE: This year, I resolved to adopt a healthier lifestyle. I cut down on sugar and carbs, ate smaller meals, exer- cised more and regularly. Overall, tried to be fit- ter. MEMORABLE MEAL: Rumble Tumble scram- bled eggs for breakfast at a gorgeous homestay called Abbotsford, Nainital. MILLENNIAL LINGO YOU PICKED UP: “Peng”, which means some- thing is great.
