Introduction

The Shaman Wisdom Cards are tools foryour journey towards being in touch

with the Inner Spirit, the One within. Theyare based on North American Indian tradi-tion, wisdom,and religion. Use the cardswith great respect, and they will provideyou with valuable assistance in your dailywalk in both worlds: spiritual and physical.

Native American Shaman use plants,animals, minerals, and other objects asallies, helpers, and guardians in their work.You will find that these cards act as guides,showing you the way to your own innertruth and leading you on your sacred pathto inner knowledge and personal wisdom.They will be your reminders of MotherEarth and Father Sky, of the balance wemust achieve and maintain in order toheal, of the love we must have and share inour life and work. They are symbols of lifeand the worlds around and within us. Usethem to develop your own medicine, yourown power. Let them help you make deci-

sions. Allow them to guide you in the bestdirection. Permit them to council you inyour choices. Listen to what they tell youand remember what they teach you.

The term “All My Relations” is used bythe Native Americans to tell of the inter-connected belief that they hold of nature.Everything and everyone is related asbrother, sister, father, mother. These cardsare more than representations of your rela-tions; they are your relations. Thank thecards for the messages they give you; usethe cards with respect; cherish the cards.Become the cards. It’s your dance.

ASPECTS

The Native Americans believe that all innature is connected and interconnect-

ed. This relationship with all that is givessignificance and symbolism to everything.Every action is deliberate, every deed aconscious act. Everything has intentionand purpose.

While other cards appear normal orinverted, showing only two aspects, theShaman Wisdom Cards have many aspectsthat must be considered when interpretingand understanding their essence, mean-ings, and messages. Because everything is

related, these cards connect to one anoth-er and to you. We are all brothers and sis-ters in this life.

The Moon Tribes, the Animal Sisters, thePlant Clans, the Tree Brothers, the SacredStone Societies, and the Seven GreatDirections all have elemental aspects thatshould be considered when interpretingarrays:

EARTH: (Rock) Stable, secure, home, con-fining, physical, attainment, achievement,abundance, and dependability.

AIR: (Green) Gentle, mild, clear, knowl-edge, mind, uplifting, exhilarating, free-dom, and expansion.

FIRE: Assertive, forceful, primal, illumina-tion, change, spirit, purification, andpower.

WATER: Smooth, uniform, rebirth, emo-tions, healing, protection, and flowing.

Animals, Plants, Trees, and Stones all havedirectional assignments that can be includ-ed in your interpretation of an array orspread.If two or more cards have the samedirection consider their significance:

EAST for beginnings, new starts, percep-tion, clarity, higher self, communication,or creativity.

SOUTH for protection, security, nurturing,trust, relationships, love, or confidence.

WEST for endings, emotions, transforma-tion, inner self knowledge, visions, orsacred dreams.

NORTH for connections, duties, responsi-bility, truth, change, health, insight, orwisdom.

ARRAYS

Choose the spread or array that is appro-priate for a particular situation. For an

easy question, choose fewer cards; singlequestions can be answered with just one ortwo cards. Because difficult matters oftenrequire greater input, to add further detail,choose more cards. If circumstances areaggressive, confrontational, combative, orhostile, choose the War Path array to helpform a battle plan from an honest heart.

Be sure to select your array carefully,considering just what it is that you are ask-ing for assistance.

METHODS�OF�CARD�SELECTION

Gently shuffle the cards by carefully cut-ting them as you would cut playing

cards. Seven is a good number of times tocut the cards to ensure that they are prop-erly mixed. This transfers your energy intothe cards; you become the cards and theybecome you.

Choose a method of selection that iscomfortable for you. Here are some sugges-tions to consider:

1. Take the cards from the top of the deck,one by one, and place them in the array.

2. Spread the cards out in a fan in front ofyou and select cards that attract yourattention.

3. Go through the deck, one by one, look-ing at the pictures and select the onesthat you find interesting. This is a goodmethod for someone who has neverused the Shaman Wisdom Cards.

4. Spread the cards out in front of you,close your eyes, and move your handslowly over the cards about one inchabove the cards. Stop at the card thatyou “feel” is right. The right card mayfeel warm, or there may be a slight tingle, etc.

If a card falls out or otherwise indicatesitself to you while you are shuffling thecards, read the message on this card; it isimportant. After all, the card chose you.

Card of the Day – 1 CardThis is done first thing in the morning togive direction and guidance for the day.Shuffle the cards and select one as yourguide or guardian in a particular situation.

Poles – 2 CardsPoles are opposite ends of a given situa-tion. This can be a relationship, businesssituation, a personal matter, or any cir-cumstance requiring you to look at con-trasting points of view. Place the first carddrawn in front of you and the second cardabove the first. The second card is thecontrasting card. Always consider bothsides, both points of view.

Taking the Sacred Path – 3 CardsThis versatile spread or array may be usedto determine outcomes of situationsinvolving two concerns and a third solu-tion. This can be used for relationships:personal, family, community, or business.Select the first card and place it directly in

front of you, the second card above thefirst, and the third card above the second.They can be read as beginning, middle,and end; as starting, continuing, and fin-ishing; or as question, insight, and answer.

War Path – 3 CardsThe War Path is used for a confrontational,combative, aggressive, or assertive situa-tion when solutions are required. You arethe first card selected, the second card isthe opponent, adversary, or opposite of agiven situation. The solution to the ques-tion is the third card drawn and that isplaced in the middle position. Read thecards and use their messages to reach afinal solution to the question. Alwaysapproach this array with an honest heartfor the proper resolution.

Following Your Path – 7 CardsEach card in this array represents a dayof the week starting with whatever day youchoose and continuing for one week. Placethe cards in order as you select them, fromleft to right. Each card will provide insight,information, or direction for the particularday the card appears. The knowledge yougain from the cards will provide guidance

for planning your work week, your person-al life, or your spiritual growth.

Storyteller Array – 8 CardsThis array indicates what is in store regard-ing career, romance, family, or the future.The array is read like a story, with the focuscard being the first card drawn. Place alleight cards in a wheel and read around thewheel going back to the focus card, whichis read again as you finish. This array pro-vides insights and directions for an eightweek period. This can also be done withtwelve cards to address the coming year.

The importance of animals and birds toNative Americans cannot be overstated.

An important food source for the people,they are spiritual helpers as well. In thissacred position, they are considered rela-tions of the First People. When animals areused for food, prayers and offerings ofthanks are always made prior to the hunt.The Shaman and Medicine Man or Womanare called upon to bless the hunt and givegratitude for the “give-away,” as well as toperform special hunting rituals for thehunting party. When the animal is taken,first, an apology and thanks are given totell the animal spirit that nothing will bewasted and that the spirit of the animalwill continue on with the spirit of ThePeople. In this way the animal is allowedthe dignity of “giving-away” so that ThePeople may live. Nothing but what is need-ed is ever taken. The sacred nature of thisutilization put Native Americans in veryclose relationship with their natural world,their universe, the Earth mother.

Animals as totems play a very significantpart in Native American religion. Duringvision quests and other rites of passage, an

animal or animals may become manifest toprovide protection, strength, wisdom, andlessons during the lifetime of alliance witha human brother or sister. In this union isgreat power. This animal spirit requiresattention, care, and feeding. NativeAmericans continue this practice eventoday during periodic ceremonies. Shamanfrequently dance with their animal (totemanimal and/or power animal) to maintainthe special relationship that they havewith one another.

While individuals have totem animals toassist them throughout life, Shaman usual-ly have their own totem animal as well asworking relationships with other animalspirits to help them perform specific tasksand Shamanic work. A totem animal maybe different from a power animal, or theymay be the same.

When an animal’s characteristics arementioned, consider those characteristicsfor yourself. If a highly developed sense ofhearing is a common trait, consider mean-ings other than the actual; consider thespiritual meanings, the essence, and theimplications as well. If an animal is aggres-sive, consider adopting that quality to dealwith a particular situation. If an animal isnurturing, like a she-bear, that is an attrib-

ute that might need development withinyourself. Also consider the gender of a par-ticular animal and examine yourself to seeif there is the balance of the masculine andfeminine, necessary to maintain balanceand harmony. Consider the obvious andthe subtle.

We, the two-leggeds, have characteris-tics, traits, and connections to all of ouranimal relations: the four-leggeds that walkthe earth; the winged-ones who guard thesky. The four-leggeds are grounded, teach-ing practicality and earth wisdom, thewinged-ones are spiritual messengers, guid-ing us to our own intuition and inspiration.Listen to their message, be attentive to theirinstruction, allow yourself to be open totheir guidance. Dance the dance.

13 – EagleEagle – East – Masculine – Air

I am Eagle. I am power. If I have flowninto your array today, I am here to helpyou see the big picture…and the minutedetails! I am your third eye vision. I giveyou courage and focus. Let me share withyou my abilities to help you achieve yourhighest aspirations. Nothing stops me.

I am Elk. I run the distance with staminaand strength. I feel my powerful legs carryme steadily away from my enemies anddanger. My ability to survive is based inpacing myself—using no unnecessarymovement. My fiery jealousy rears its rackwhen confronted with competition, butmy love is deep and powerful, emanatingfrom my pure heart. I prefer the companyof my own gender when not mating. Myloyalty is fierce but gentle.

I am capable of great accomplishment. Iam gratitude. I am majesty and beauty.

I run the distance with stamina andstrength. If I have loped into your lifetoday, I am reminding you to “pace” your-self. Are you taking proper care of yourphysical body and your spiritual needs?You can accomplish much from the strength of purpose deep in your heart, butnot it you are “unwell” or “burned out.”

My medicine for you is an indicationthat you need to re-establish your connec-tion to your own feminine or masculinenature. Do you need to develop morepower or more gentleness? Perhaps you arejealous or envious… or you are on thereceiving end of these energy-sappingemotions. The need here is to go within,find the piece of the puzzle that providesanswers to the riddle. Once found, releaseit, let it go, allowing unconditional love toflow freely in your experience. I ammajesty and beauty.

I am Owl. I am clarity of intuition andwisdom. My keen hearing and crystallinevision gives me insight where others missthe picture. I am feared for my ability to“see in the dark.” I discern truth from fic-tion with my watchful, silent observation

of my domain. Wisely sitting on the fencepost, on my brother’s shoulder, or in thetop of my favorite pine, I see and hear all.I stealthily and silently zero in on mydesires and dreams. Nothing is hiddenfrom me.

I am clarity of vision and wisdom. As Isilently float onto your shoulder, I amtelling you to keep a watchful eye open atall times. There are those who wish youdidn’t see beneath the surface of their real-ities. Protect yourself or others will takeadvantage of you. You are naturally dis-cerning and intuitive. Continue to listenand observe so you won’t miss the subtlemessages contained in my message.Remember, even in the darkness, you seewhat others cannot. I am Coyote. I am trickster. Watch out, Iwill trick you! I’ll concentrate my diggingin one place to throw you off the track ofmy real destination. As soon as you’vetaken the bait, I’ll go after the real prize! Iam joy, laughter, and humor; lighten up.My vision sees down long dark tunnels andmy keen sense of smell knows what it’safter, even in the tall sweet grass of theplains. I double check all the signals, doyou? I am the teacher and the teaching.

I am dogging you to watch out. Are yousaying, “What a fool I’ve been?” Perhapsyou need to lighten up and laugh at the sit-uation…howl at the moon!

The directions are always honored by theNorth American Indians and Shaman

worldwide. The openings to their lodges,whether earth lodges, hogans, tepees,wickiups, or long houses, always faced east.East is always honored first thing in themorning, as that is where the sun is born.

Before any ceremony or ritual is per-formed, an offering of smoke: sage, cedar,sweetgrass or tobacco is made in the fourcardinal directions, to the earth and to thesky. An offering is also made to the seventhdirection, the Self.

When a Great Direction Card appears inyour array it is to be read literally as a spir-itual direction, course or heading. Thereare only seven Direction Cards, so thesecards are very powerful and their messagessignificant. If you get a Direction Card in acardinal direction point on an array, thatcard’s message is magnified and the direc-tion point message should also be read.

The Native American association of ele-ments to directions is different than theWestern assignment. You will notice thatthe assignment of elements to directions is

one quarter different between the two sys-tems. We have chosen the Native Americanassignment. Know your directions and youwill know your direction.
