Vietnam needs to expand its power production to keep up with its strong economic growth. In the southern Mekong region alone at least 7 new powerplants are planned to be developed in the very near future, mostly coal-fired. One of these is Tan Tao’s new Kien Luong powerplant which will produce power for its new planned industrial zone and other industries surrounding.

Tan Tao group also intend to develop a new deepwater transhipment at Nam Du island 120 km offshore from the coast. This island has the potential to become The deepwater transhipment port for the Mekong area in south Vietnam. Forecasted cargo flows include up to 50 mtpa of coal import and up to 12 mtpa of rice and seafood export.

Rural Water Supply

Only 30% of the rural population of Ba Ria Vung Tau province has access to safe drinking water. This has a negative effect on public health and hampers socioeconomic development.

A project was defined to provide clean water to 100.000 people in 25.000 households as well as to small and medium enterprises. The project comprises 2 complete water supply systems consisting raw water intake, water treatment and a distribution network with a total capacity of 25.000 m3/day.

The project is co-financed by the Government of The Netherlands through its ORIO program, aimed at public infrastructure development in developing countries.

With the implementation of the project, the health condition of rural people as well as the environmental living conditions in the area will be largely improved.

Urban and industrial Wastewater Collection and Treatment

Most of the large industrial zones in Phu My Urban Area of Ba Ria Vung Tau already have their own wastewater treatment plants. Recently, four new industrial zones and clusters were established to concentrate scattered SME’s that are too small to efficiently establish their own treatment facilities.

This project was defined to service these industrial zones and clusters and to comprise a central wastewater collection network and wastewater treatment plant to connect 350 of these SME’s. At the same time also 174.000 inhabitants of the urban residential areas will be connected to the system.

The first phase of the project will collect and treat 29.700 m3 of wastewater per day.

The treatment system will apply Royal HaskoningDHV’s proprietary Carrousel® technology.

The project is co-financed by the Government of The Netherlands through its ORIO program, aimed at public infrastructure development in developing countries.

Urban Wastewater Collection, Treatment and Reuse

Phan Rang Thap Cham city is the administrative capital of Vietnam’s Ninh Thuan province. The region is one of Vietnam’s poorest and driest.

The absence of sewerage and wastewater treatment means that wastewater discharges directly into the city and surroundings, causing serious pollution to ground and surface water.

The construction of a wastewater collection network and treatment plant will bring much needed sanitation to the city, dramatically improving the lives of the 125,000 people living there.

After the project implementation, the treated wastewater will be reused to irrigate surrounding agricultural areas, improving the quality of the region’s lakes, rivers, protecting the environment, surface and ground water.

The first phase will cover a capacity of 10,000 m3/day.The treatment system will apply Royal HaskoningDHV’s proprietary Carrousel® technology.

CEPT Wastewater Treatment

This project is part of the Coastal Cities Environmental Sanitation Project, financed through World Bank.

The population growth of Quy Nhon City continues and urbanization rapidly increases. This puts high demands on the availability of public infrastructure, particularly in the area of wastewater collection and treatment.

In order to diminish serious risks to public health and the urban environment and to take away a constraint to future economic growth, this project was defined.

The first phase of the project consists of the construction of a wastewater treatment plant with a capacity of 7,000 m3/day using a Chemically Enhanced Primary Treatment (CEPT) system.

Fertilizer Plant Wastewater Treatment

Baconco is a well-known company in the fertilizer industry of Vietnam with various crop care products like USP High tech, Super Tan & AVS.

The existing wastewater treatment facility of the fertilizer factory in Phu My I Industrial Zone (Ba Ria Vung Tau Province) was in need of upgrading to meet the discharge standards for Total Nitrogen. Total Nitrogen in the wastewater mainly consists of ammonium – nitrogen (NH4+-N) and nitrate-nitrogen (N-NO3-). Total Nitrogen value in the wastewater can amount up to 250 ppm.

Royal HaskoningDHV Vietnam was awarded the design & build contract for upgrading of the existing wastewater treatment plant (360 m3/day), focusing on Nitrogen removal.Key processes were an ammonia stripping tower and a conventional activated sludge process designed for Nitrogen removal.

Treated wastewater meets the discharge requirements for nitrogen (TN < 40 mg/l).

Flood prevention has been one of the biggest preoccupations of Ho Chi Minh City authorities in recent years. Residents confront flooding every year during the rainy season. Causes of flooding include flood tide, heavy rainfall, high discharges of upstream rivers, insufficient capacity of the drainage system, low ground elevations of the city and land subsidence, spatial planning, policies and regulations, lack of public awareness and participation. During this study an integrated flood risk strategy is developed and flood protection measures are recommended to deal with this increasing flood risk.

Royal HaskoningDHV has provided the following services:

• Preparation of integrated strategies and implementation plan for Flood and Inundation Management (FIM) in HCMC and related areas.

• Strengthening the capacity of HCMC Steering Center for the Urban Flood Control Program (SCFC)

• Developing partnerships and establishing collaboration between Dutch and Vietnamese educational, scientific, water and environmental institutions.
