1. What Hardware do I need to access the internet?

2. What is the difference between a web, mail and proxy server?

3. Will I need a router, if so, what for?

1. The first thing needed to connect up to the internet is a fully work-

ing computer and an internet provider with a secure connection to

the internet. You also need an IP address to connect to a certain

Switch or Hub which allows you to connect via internet and

download, talk, surf the web and mainly look up information. Hav-

ing these is a vital part to connecting to the internet. You also need

a browser, the default browser for every computer/laptop is inter-

net explorer, but, there are many more browsers and some that are

better the internet explorer; the main ones are Google Chrome and

Mozilla Firefox.

2. A web is a website that is connected via the internet and allows

people to share information and files. Mail is an easy way to talk to

someone directly and mainly that one person, you can add multiple

attachments and add more people who may wish to view the email;

this is one of the best ways to share/talk with other web users. A

proxy server is a client that connects to other computers requesting

service, for many resources that are available from a different

server. This can be used to access certain sites that have been

blocked and to leak information; these can act as web pages similar

to the real web page.

3. A router is a device that forwards information over different serv-

ers, this can be accessed wireless or a wired connection and many

people in a certain area can access it if they know a required secu-

rity key. Yes you will need a router for a better connection; a better

connection help’s your computer multi-task, therefore, letting you

have a better range of work to complete.

1. What software do I need to access the internet?

2. What is a browser and why is there so many of them?

3. What is email and what is an email client?

1. The software needed to access the internet is a browser and a wired/

wireless connection to the internet. Most browsers are compatible to con-

nect to the internet to generally surf the net and check e-mails, bank, etc.

A browser is one of the main things to allow you to access the internet. A

router is an important thing to access the internet because it can provide

a wireless or wired connection for your computer/laptop. A router is the

best service for internet, providing you have a ISP (Internet service pro-

vider), such as Sky, Virgin, AOL, BT, etc. There are quite a few ISP’s and

all have different offers that suit you.

2. A browser is one of the main software to access the internet, it allows you

to surf the internet whenever, providing you have a connection. There are

many browsers to use and all free for use. The default browser for Win-

dows is IE (internet explorer), there are many other browsers such as,

Google Chrome, Mozilla firefox, Safari and Opera. There are more for

different OS’s (operating server).

3. Email stands for Electronic Mail and is an easy way to communicate to

other people for business related or long distance chat. An Email client is

like Outlook, Mac Mail, Access and Thunderbird. These are the most

common clients, outlook is always the default client for Window’s.

1. What is an ISP and how important are they in accessing the internet?

2. I don’t have a telephone line at home can I still access the internet

through a given ISP?

3. What is downloading and uploading and how is it measured?

1. An ISP is a Internet Service Provider and it is extremely important in

accessing the internet, there is many ISP’s such as Sky, Virgin, BT and

AOL, there are a lot more but they are some of the main ISP’s. These

are important to access the internet because they mainly give you a

connection. Access ISPs connect customers to the Internet using cop-

per, wireless or fiber connections.

2. Yes you can access the internet without a telephone line, there are many

other way’s to access the internet such as, WiFi, 3G, Dongle, LAN, etc.

They are the most basic way’s of connecting up to the internet without a

phone line. A given ISP is sky, BT, virgin, etc. These all can have

phone lines as well but, they can give you access to internet.

3. Downloading and uploading is a method that can be used by anyone,

downloading is used to get access to files on the internet and it

downloads straight to the location you desire. Uploading is a way of

sending files to someone from what you have created or have wrote. It

is a simple method of sending work/information to other internet users.

You can upload files to Dropbox for an example, and you can download

from any website that allows it.

1. What is web hosting?

2. How do I get my own personal web address?

3. What is the difference between a .com and a .co.uk?

1. Web hosting is a internet service where a company or household can host

the own website, mainly called an Intranet. But, a company that does web

hosting can easily make it so that it’s world wide accessible, this makes it

easier for a company to expand and release further products. Web hosts

can also provide data centre space and connectivity to the Internet.

2. To get your own personal web address all you simply have to do is create

a website, or ask a web design company to design one for you. There is

more logic to it like finding out your IP Address and getting a domain to

use. But, other than that it’s pretty simple to own your personal web

address.

3. The difference between .com and .co.uk is that .com is an American

based hosting, so nothing from a British computer can access American

certified files. .co.uk work’s the same but it is a British web hosting.

2. What is blogging and how long has it been happening for?

3. Where can I blog?

1. Web 2.0 is associated with web applications that collaborate and give

access to the World Wide Web. Web 2.0 could be the next world wide

web, it is also known as the Read/Write Web.

2. Blogging is where a person/company will write about a subject or pro-

ject they have been working on, it’s basically an online diary that is

open for everyone to read. It is an easy way of obtaining information

about a certain thing or item, many people blog and it is updated regu-

larly. There are hundreds of blogs that have been created, there are also

social blogging, this is where you can write a few lines and post it to

everyone on your friends list, e.g Facebook, MySpace and Bebo.

3. There are many places where you can blog, such as Facebook,

MySpace, Bebo for social activities and Blogger for just general blog-

ging, there are also other websites and easy to find.

1. What are online applications?

2. Is this same as cloud computing?

3. Where can I find online applications?

1. Online applications are software that you can use whilst still in

the web browser, Java is a good example, it always asks if you

would like to run the JavaScript. There are more online appli-

cations like shockwave, Silverlight and quick time. These are

good applications because they always ask your permission

before using them. There are a lot more applications like Mi-

crosoft online, Dropbox, Skydrive, etc.

2. Yes it is the same as cloud computing because cloud comput-

ing is a like a server that holds data for other people to use,

such as Dropbox and Skydrive, this is an easy accessible way

to share files.

3. Online applications are easy to find, mainly search for them. It

is an instant search when you search for one, there are a lot that

has already been mentioned.
