Las Fallas de Valencia, las tradicionales fiestas en
honor al patrón de los carpinteros, San José, son
todo un despliegue de color con inmensos “ninots”
grandes y pequeños que adornan las calles y plazas.
Atrás quedan los días en que la gente sacaba sus
muebles viejos y los quemaba en las calles de Valencia,
hoy en día las Fallas son el resultado del trabajo de
mucha gente; artistas falleros, pirotécnicos, falleras
mayores y su corte de honor, comisiones falleras…
El monumento fallero “ninot” habitualmente tiene
carácter satírico sobre temas de actualidad. Las Fallas
suelen constar de una figura o composición central
de varios metros de altura, las más grandes superan
los 30 metros, rodeadas de numerosas figuras más
pequeñas. Incluyen letreros escritos en valenciano
explicando el significado de cada escenografía.
Durante las Fallas, Valencia está inundada por
visitantes de todos los rincones del mundo
que quieren vivir la magia que se respira estos
días por toda la ciudad, la pólvora, el ruido,
los fuegos artificiales, las calles iluminadas,
las bandas de música, verbenas, conciertos.
Todos los días a las 14.00 horas se celebra en la
Plaza del Ayuntamiento las tradicionales mascletàs,
espectáculo sonoro y envolvente olor a pólvora.
Y cuando el sol empieza a ponerse es un buen
momento para dar un paseo por las calles, admirar
los monumentos y reponer fuerzas con un delicioso
chocolate con buñuelos…, porque la ciudad no duerme
en fallas, y le invitamos a disfrutarlas con nosotros!
1. FALLAS VALENCIA -VALENCIA’S FALLAS FESTIVAL
The Fallas of Valencia, traditional festivities in honour
of the patron of carpenters, St Joseph, are a veritable
display of colour with immense “ninots” or dolls both
big and small that adorn the streets and squares.
Gone are the days when people brought out their
old furniture and burnt it in the streets of Valencia.
Nowadays the Fallas are the result of the work of a
lot of people, artists who make the Fallas, pyrotechnic
firms, falleras mayores and their retinue, Fallas
committees…
The “ninot” monument is usually of a satirical nature
based on current affairs. The Fallas are usually
made up of a figure or central composition several
metres high. The biggest are over 30 metres high,
surrounded by numerous smaller ones. They include
signs written in the Valencian language explaining the
meaning of each scene.
During Fallas, Valencia is flooded with visitors from
all corners of the globe who want to experience the
air of magic that can be sensed all over the city, the
gunpowder, the noise, the fireworks, the illuminated
streets, the bands, the street dances, the concerts.
Every day at 2 p.m. in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento,
the Town Hall Square, the traditional Mascletàs
or barrage of fireworks take place: a spectacle of
sound and all-enveloping smell of gunpowder.
And when the sun begins to set it is a good time to go
for a walk through the streets, admire the monuments
and regain one’s strength with a delicious drink of hot
chocolate with buñuelos, a fried dough ball…, because
the city doesn’t sleep during the Fallas, and we invite
you to enjoy them with us!

Es el pregón de las fiestas falleras y se celebra el
último domingo del mes de febrero. Es el acto
en el que la Fallera mayor de la ciudad, reúne en
las Torres de Serranos a todas las comisiones fa-
lleras ataviadas con su estandarte. Y realiza una
llamada a la iniciación de los festejos, invitando
a todos los valencianos y visitantes a participar
de los actos falleros. Con la entrega de las llaves
de la ciudad a la Fallera Mayor por parte de la
alcaldesa de Valencia, se dan por comenzadas
las fallas.
It is the opening speech of the Fallas festivities
and is held on the last Sunday in February. It
is the act at which the Fallera Mayor (or Falla
Queen) gathers at the Torres de Serranos all the
fallas committees, each bearing its standard,
and calls for the start of the festivities, inviting all
the people of Valencia and visitors to take part
in the Fallas activities. With the handing over of
the keys of the city by the Mayoress of Valencia
to the Fallera Mayor, the Fallas are deemed to
have started.

El olor a pólvora, el ruido atronador y el ambiente,
hacen de este evento uno de los preferidos por
los valencianos. Un espectáculo de petardos de
diversa potencia, masclets y carcasas, en el que
se obtienen composiciones musicales a través
del ruido de los cañones de pólvora.
El nombre de Mascletà proviene de un tipo de
petardo llamado ‘masclet’. Para disfrutarlas
es necesario estar próximos al lugar donde
explosionan los productos pirotécnicos, ya que
no es cuestión de ver, sino de sentir y oír, ya que
producen sensaciones similares a la audición de
un concierto, consiguiendo que el estruendo
envuelva a los espectadores, y todo en cuestión
de escasos minutos (5-7) y llegando a superar
los 120 decibelios.
Desde el 1 al 19 de marzo, se dispara diariamente
a las 14:00 h una mascletá en la Plaza del
Ayuntamiento de Valencia.
The smell of gunpowder, the deafening noise
and the atmosphere, make this event the one the
Valencians like best. It is a spectacle of firecrackers
of varying strengths, masclets and cartridges, in
which musical compositions are created from
the noise of the gunpowder cannons.
The name Mascletà comes from a type of
firecracker called a ‘masclet’. To enjoy them you
need to be near the place where the pyrotechnic
devices are being let off, since it is not a question
of seeing but of feeling and hearing. They
produce sensations similar to listening to a
concert, with the din enveloping the spectators.
Besides, all this is achieved in a matter of a few
minutes (5-7), reaching more than 120 decibels.
From the 1st to the 19th March, a Mascletà is let off
every day at 2 p.m. in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento
(Town Hall Square), in Valencia.

Los días 14 y 15 de marzo son los días de la plan-
tà, el acto de erigir los monumentos falleros.
Actualmente asciende a 385 el número de co-
misiones falleras repartidas por toda la ciudad.
El día 15 por la mañana, se realiza la de los mo-
numentos de la categoría infantil y entre el 15 y
la madrugada del 16 los monumentos grandes,
siempre debiendo estar plantada a las 08:00 h
de la mañana del día 16, momento en que se
presentará el jurado para calificarlas. La “plan-
tà” se considera el momento exacto en que la
falla queda completamente acabada y lista para
ser visitada, con todos sus “ninots”, carteles y
detalles.
The 14th and 15th March are the days when the
plantà or construction, the act of erecting the
Falla monuments, takes place. Currently the Fallas
committees number 385, spread over the entire
city.
On the morning of the 15th, the plantà of the
monuments in the children’s category takes place.
Between the 15th and the early hours of the 16th, it
is the turn of the large monuments, having to be
erected by 8 a.m on the morning of the 16th, when
the jury will arrive to judge them. The “plantà” is
deemed to be the exact moment when the Falla is
completely finished and ready to be visited, with
all its “ninots”, posters and final details.

La Ofrenda - The Ofrenda (the flower offering)
La ofrenda a la Virgen de los Desamparados,
patrona de la ciudad de Valencia y de la
Comunidad Valenciana, se realiza a lo largo de la
tarde y comienzo de la noche de los días 17 y 18
de marzo. En ella, cada fallera ofrece un ramo de
flores con el que se confecciona un espectacular
tapiz de flores a modo de manto que cubre el
cuerpo de la Virgen, cuya estructura de madera
de 14 metros permite ir entrelazando los ramos
para formar impresionantes diseños.
A día de hoy desfila una cifra superior de
100.000 falleros, repartidos en dos días, durante
más de 20 horas de ofrenda.
The flower offering to Our Lady of the Forsaken,
patron saint of the city of Valencia and of the
Valencian Community, is made throughout the
afternoon and early evening of the 17th and 18th
March. Each fallera offers a bouquet of flowers
with which a spectacular tapestry of flowers
is made in the form of a robe that covers the
Virgin’s body, whose wooden structure of 14 m
high covers the body of the Virgin allowing the
bouquets to create impressive designs.
Nowadays more than 100,000 falleros parade in
the flower offering over two days for more than
20 hours.

La cremà es el acto de clausura de las fiestas. Con-
siste en la quema de los monumentos falleros la no-
che del 19 de marzo.
En sus orígenes, las Fallas eran un acto que celebra-
ba la llegada del equinoccio de primavera y tenía
una simbología relacionada con la quema y purifi-
cación de lo antiguo, de lo que el invierno había de-
jado y de renovación dando la bienvenida a la nueva
estación del año.
El acto viene precedido por un castillo de fuegos
artificiales, encendido por la Fallera Mayor y el Pre-
sidente de cada Comisión.
Entre las 22:00 h y 23:00 h se queman los monu-
mentos infantiles y posteriormente, entre las 00:00h
y la 01:00h se queman los monumentos grandes.
Mención especial tienen las Fallas de la Plaza del
Ayuntamiento, que están fuera de concurso y son
las últimas en quemarse en cada uno de los horarios.
The cremà is the closing ceremony of the festivities.
It involves the burning of the Falla monuments on
the night of 19th March.
Originally, the Fallas were an act to celebrate the
arrival of the spring equinox. Its symbols had to do
with the burning and purification of the old, which
the winter had left behind, and the renewal by
welcoming the new season of the year.
The act is preceded by a fireworks display, lit
by the Fallera Mayor and the Chairman of each
Committee.
Between 10.00 p.m. and 11 p.m. the children’s
monuments are burnt and afterwards, between
midnight and 1 a.m., the large monuments are
burnt. Special mention must be made of the Fallas
in the Town Hall Square, which are outside of the
competition and are the last to be burnt in each of
the sessions.

Los actuales trajes de fallera, llamados más
correctamente trajes de valenciana, están
basados en la forma de vestir de las mujeres de
Valencia en los siglos XVIII y XIX.
Empezando por los pies, la fallera se viste con
zapatos forrados con tela, generalmente, la
misma del traje. Las piernas las cubren con
medias de seda o algodón, caladas y bordadas
con motivos diversos. Encima, las enaguas,
que es la ropa interior que se coloca debajo
de la falda; normalmente, a esta prenda se le
añade un ahuecador para que la falda tenga
más volumen. El tejido de la falda puede ser de
seda, algodón o rayón, estampado con flores y
otros motivos vegetales. Encima se coloca el
delantal, que está bordado en hilo de oro o plata
formando llamativos dibujos.
En el pelo, la mujer puede llevar un moño o tres.
En la parte trasera de la cabeza se lleva uno
más grande, mientras que en la sien se llevan
dos más pequeños, los “rodetes”. Los moños se
cogen con agujas pasaderas y se adornan con
las peinetas, la pinta para el moño trasero y los
rascamoños para los rodetes.
Mientras que la vestimenta tradicional masculina
es el traje de “saragüell”. El tejido de esta
vestimenta es el lienzo para los días de trabajo, y
en los festivos se cubre con un segundo calzón
de lana o seda, conocido como negrilla.
The current fallera costumes, whose correct
name is Valencian costumes, are based on the
dress of Valencian women in the 18th and 19th
centuries.
Starting at the feet, the fallera wears shoes lined
with fabric, generally the same as the dress
itself. Their legs are covered with silk or cotton
stockings, with openwork and embroidered with
various motifs. On top they wear the petticoats,
which is underwear that is placed beneath the
skirt. Usually, to this garment is added a skirt
hoop for the dress to have more volume. The
skirt fabric can be silk, cotton or rayon, with a
floral print and other plant motifs. Placed on top
is the apron, which is embroidered in gold or
silver thread creating remarkable patterns.
Women’s hairstyle can be in one or three buns.
The larger one is worn at the back of the head,
whilst smaller ones are worn over the ears,
the “coiled buns”. The buns are held in place
with straight hairpins and are adorned with
ornamental combs, a bigger one for the rear
bun and two smaller ones for the coiled buns.
On the other hand, the traditional clothing
for men is the “saragüell” costume. The fabric
of this garment is linen for work days, and on
public holidays it is covered with a second pair
of woolen or silk breeches known as negrilla
(“blackies”).

3. CALLES ILUMINADAS - STREETLIGHT DISPLAYS
Valencia en Fallas también se caracteriza por
la iluminación de sus calles. De hecho, existe
un concurso específico de calles iluminadas,
en las que participan y compiten por el premio
varias comisiones falleras, otorgando mayor
protagonismo a la iluminación que a la propia
Falla.
En el barrio de Ruzafa, en concreto en las calles
Cuba, Literato Azorín y Sueca, se produce unos
de los mayores espectáculos lumínicos de la
ciudad, atrayendo a miles de visitantes todos
los años.
A view of the city’s streets, while the festival is on,
is a sight worth seeing. The Fallas Committees
decorate their districts with the most impressive
artistic lighting. As a complement to this
lighting, some Fallas Committees take part
in the competition to find the best decorated
street.
The lighting in the Ruzafa district (Streets:
Cuba, Literato Azorín and Sueca) is especially
attractive, where narrow alleys combine with
broad, spacious streets, providing a huge range
of illumination possibilities which attracts every
year thousands of visitors from abroad.

Rubén Tortosa (Moixent, 1964) combina su carrera artística con la de profesor titular del Dpto. de Dibujo de la Facultad de Bellas Ar-tes de la Universitat Politècnica de València y con la investigación como Experto Univer-sitario en Creación Digital y Comunicación Multimedia
La dilata trayectoria de Rubén Tortosa se inició a mediados de los ochenta, cuando comenzó a relacionarse con la tecnología. A partir de ese momento, el artista valenciano se dio cuenta de que se puede mirar «de otra manera».Desde que el hombre de las cavernas dejó por primera vez plasmada su huella en las paredes de su entorno, el ser humano ha intentado siempre «reconducir la luz», tal y como explica Tortosa. Es decir, desde el pri-mer momento, la historia del arte no ha teni-do otro fin sino el de canalizar la necesidad de las personas de mirar y observar para después, representar todo aquello que ven.
En su caso, el artista inició su carrera en el momento en que fue consciente de que po-dían existir unos dispositivos electrónicos que, de alguna manera, daban respuesta a aquello que él estaba pensando.
Su primer gran descubrimiento en este cam-po fue el fax, una máquina que le «sorpren-dió» . Que en aquel entonces se pudiese ha-cer un dibujo, introducirlo en una ranura, que éste se descompusiese totalmente, viajase por «un túnel angosto», cruzase «borrascas y anticiclones», y apareciese en unos segundos a la otra parte del mundo para volverse a ma-terializar era algo «mágico», explica Tortosa.
Todo este mundo introdujo al artista en un proceso de trabajo en el que la investigación ha sido determinante. Esta faceta es palpable también en su actividad como profesor en la Facultad de Bellas Artes de la Universidad Politécnica de Valencia, donde combina su

The trajectory of Rubén Tortosa began in the
mid-eighties, when he began to relate to te-
chnology. From that moment, the Valencian
artist realized that you can look «differently».
From the caveman, the first time, the expres-
sion, the footprint, the walls of his surroun-
dings, the human being has always tried to
“redirect the light”, as Tortosa explains. That is,
from the first moment, the history of art has
had no other purpose but also to channel the
need of people to look and observe and then
represent everything they see.
In his case, the artist began his career at the
time he was aware that there could be an
electronic device that somehow responded to
what he was thinking.
His first great discovery in this field was the
fax, a machine that “surprised” him. That at
that time you could make a drawing, insert it in
a slot, that is seen exclusively compared, travel
through “a narrow tunnel”, cross “squalls and
anticyclones”, and appear in a few seconds to
the other part of the world to turn to Materia-
lize was something “magical”, explains Tortosa.
All this world introduced the artist in a process
of work in research that has been decisive.
This facet is also palpable in his activity as a
professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the

Rubén Tortosa presenta en el espacio IMEX sus últimos trabajos bajo el nombre de «Geo-grafía de la Luz [Screen_Ink]». En ésta, se presenta una serie de obras nacidas de los llamados «glitch», concepto utilizado para catalogar los «imprevistos» que detecta un dispositivo digital durante su funcionamien-to. Todo aparato tecnológico, ante este efec-to, genera unos datos concretos que quedan registrados en la máquina. Los cuadros de Tortosa no son más que la recopilación del espectro visible de estos datos, una tarea mayúscula de precisión artística e informá-tica.
Su obra se ha mostrado en galerías privadas y ferias nacionales e internacionales, desta-cando la presencia en colecciones como: Xe-rox Art Center, Milán - Canon España, Madrid - Universitat Politècnica de València - Co-lección Norbert Hein, Friburgo - Fundación Goya. Fuendetodos - IVAM, Valencia.
