Message from the Ambassador
02
In 2011, DanSe DialogueS, the first ever bi-cultural festival celebrating contemporary dance, offered an exceptional opportunity for the best from the worlds of French and Indian contemporary dance to connect. Although both are relatively new with reference to the history of our two countries in this area, they have attained excellence and they are showcasing remarkable artistes known for having developed their own vocabulary, more or less inspired by the most ancient traditions, but firmly rooted in modernity and creation.
The thriving scene in India and the evolution and transition taking place in the movement arts here – the pertinent context that led the Embassy of France in India to initiate the first DanSe DialogueS in 2011 in three major cities – has again spurred us to an encore in 2014, this time spread over seven cities.
This second edition of DanSe DialogueS features two new bi-national productions designed over monthly residencies of French choreographers in Delhi and Chennai. The festival programme in
each city will present French as well as local troupes; and once again, varied performances offered during this new edition will allow cross-sections of society to come together to share their love for this form of silent poetry. We look forward to your joining us on this path of mutual artistic enrichment and understanding.
I warmly welcome the French and Indian companies participating in this festival and thank all our partners for joining us in supporting contemporary dance in India.
H.E. Mr François RichierAmbassador of France in India

The Embassy of France in India is delighted to introduce the second edition of DanSe DialogueS 2014. This pan-India festival is dedicated to promoting the richness and diversity of Indian and French contemporary dance, fostering collaboration between French and Indian professionals in this field while popularizing contemporary forms of expression vis-à-vis the Indian public.
France and India are two hugely proficient and active countries in the field of dance. With about eighty companies touring regularly all over the world, and very supportive cultural policies, contemporary dance in France is reputed for its high quality as well as the diversity of its practices. Meanwhile, in the past two decades, dancers and choreographers of India have been transforming the strongly-rooted traditional codes to give new means of expression to the moving body.
The first edition of DanSe DialogueS initiated a dynamic of exchange between Indian and French contemporary dance professionals, through live performances, performance screenings, panel discussions and workshops conducted by choreographers. The festival in 2011 took place in Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore featuring 3 French and 10 Indian companies, and attracting over 7,500 visitors over a period of 10 days.
Following from the experience of organising countrywide performing arts festivals such as the last edition of Bonjour India, the French Embassy
ndin India will present the 2 Edition of DanSe DialogueS from April 11 to 30, 2014 throughout India. This year's programme is designed to nurture the strong bonds established with India in the field of contemporary

dance. The second edition enlarges its scope to seven cities including Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Trivandrum, and shifts the focus on Indo-French collaborative projects.
In preparation of the festival, Indian and French dancers were invited to interact during artistic residencies set in Delhi and Chennai. Learning from and creating with each other, two major choreographic pieces – hip-hop extravaganza Récital by Mourad Merzouki, and contemporary performance, L'étranger au paradis indien (“Stranger in Indian Paradise”) by David Rolland, Padmini Chettur and Preethi Athreya, were conceived.
Alongside master classes and video screenings, the programme notably comprises French & Indian vanguard projects. Black Pulp by Xin Company, redefines the contemporary genre; Nos Solitudes (“Our Solitudes”) by A.I.M.E Co. and Cette Immense Intimité (“This Huge Intimacy”) by Retouramont Co. pay tribute to the agility and weightlessness of the dancers' suspended bodies; and Astad Deboo's Rhythm Divine blends percussions and Manipuri dance in a unique sensorial journey.
The Embassy of France in India and Institut Français en Inde address their most sincere thanks to the Alliance Française de Delhi and all the other participating Alliances, to the Indira Gandhi National Center for the Arts, the National School of Drama, Région Pays de la Loire, Kamani auditorium, The Danceworx, Kri Foundation and Lycée Français de Delhi for their invaluable cooperation.

Description of the Show
At some point in the vanishing history of a couple, their home fades from a place of shelter to a museum of what once was ...
On a music composed and recorded by the choreographer himself, Black Pulp, which was originally created for four dancers, has been adapted into a duet. Martin Harriague presents a dark and explosive modern Grand pas de deux, for which he has collaborated with Derrick Brown, an American beat poet, who wrote the words spoken throughout the piece.

Black PulpAbout Martin HarriagueMartin Harriague started classical and contemporary dance at the age of 19. He danced with the Ballet Biarritz, the Ballet National de Marseille and Noord Nederlandse Dans (Netherlands). Currently associated with KCDC in Israël, he is also directing Xin, his own company based in Bordeaux. Parallel to his dancing career, Martin also choreographs his own works, directs video clips and write his own music. Taking risks with movement, finding an identity in it, playing with a lot of dynamics within the movement as well as in the musicality, combining the use of control, release and explosiveness, form founding principles of Martin Harriague's work.

Description of the Show
About David Rolland
10 dancers perform a really precise choreography after only a few hours of practice by using audio guided scores and following the indications given by printed carpets which cover the floor. This performance invites the audience to enter a dance labyrinth of abstract figures. Each set starts out with a new visual, sound and choreographic design. The sum of bodies soon creates a kaleidoscope in perpetual motion, where the simplest movement, multiplied by the number, becomes outstanding.
For this Indian adaptation of the show, David Rolland invited two choreographers from Chennai to write one sequence each. Padmini Chettur created a new dance piece with its associated carpet, based on a Kolam design, and Preethi Athreya created her own solo, inspired by Tony Bennett's song Stranger in Paradise, on a carpet designed by David Rolland.

David Rolland studied contemporary, jazz and classical dance. If the forms of his live arts pieces are very varied, the basis of his interest stays the same: an interrogation of non–verbal communication and our perception of it – our perception of daily movements, the construction of body language, mimicry, and beyond that, the appearance of dance movement. In this framework, he has created dance pieces, performances or displays that provoke a questioning of codes of social behaviour, often in a playful spirit. Since 2009, David Rolland is working on the development of specific systems of scores to guide professional dancers or non-dancers to perform his pieces.

14Date: 17 April 2014Time: 7 pmVenue: Kamani auditoriumDuration: 1 hr 10 minEntry: Free, seating on first come first served basis
Concept and choreography: Astad DebooAdvisor to choreographer: Guru Seityaban SinghLight design: Milind SrivastavCostumes: Archana ShahMusic: Drummers of Shri Shri Nat San Kirtan, Yoichiro Yoshikawa, Dawn UpshawPerformers: T. Nokuljeet Singh, Y. Handsome Singh, Y. Dharmendra Singh, S. Shanti Kumar Singh, K. Ranbir Singh, N. Ibungo Singh, A. Nilachandra Singh, Y. Ibungo Singh and Astad Deboo
Description of the ShowRhythm Divine is based on the conviction that dance is a system of ideas, not a method, and that, together with music, dance can enrich the moral, the material and the intellectual spheres of life, leading to a new beginning.
Performing along with 8 Manipuri Thang-Ta dancing drummers, Astad blends with success Indian classical dance forms with modern dance techniques, creating his own style: a new idiom, an art of new forms that talk to each other in a contemporary way. “Thang-Ta”, art of the sword and spear, is an exciting dance form that has been adapted from the ancient martial arts form of Manipur, in North East India. An original collaboration born out of Astad Deboo's 11-year romance with Manipur, where he came across Guru Seityabanji and his troupe of Pung Cholom drummers of Shri Shri Govindji Nat Sankirtan.

Cette Immense Intimité This Immense IntimacyCompagnie Retouramont | Aerial Dance
Description of the ShowThis Immense Intimacy is a highly-unusual vertical ballet. This piece created in 2011-2012 features one female dancer, only held by an elastic rope, performing an aerial solo using the wall as a dance floor. The dancer's body evolves in a myriad of images projected on the wall which responds to the performer's movements. The combination of the aerial choreography and the interactive video-projections constitutes an amazing show of light, music and dance which will thrill the audience.
This site-specific act, designed for outdoor spaces, has been performed multiple times in diverse contexts – most notably on heritage buildings. In Delhi, it will be presented on the façade of the Indira Gandhi Centre for the Arts, a dynamic cultural and multidisciplinary hub located at the heart of the city whose building is an excellent example of the modern architecture of New Delhi.

RécitalCreated by compagnie KäfigPerformed by The Danceworx Company | Hip-hop
Description of the ShowA challenge,The confrontation of two worlds,A concerto v/s hip-hop
Récital mingles the energy of hip-hop with sounds and elements from the realm of classical music with humour and a hint of cheekiness. Eight hip-hop dancers, the sounds of a violin and the distorted melody of a talk box come together in a highly unlikely encounter where contemporary trends alternately play and battle with tradition. Performed over 500 times all over the world, this third creation brought worldwide fame to the Käfig Company and its choreographer, Mourad Merzouki.
Merzouki, who is strongly involved in initiating dialogue and exchange around the multiple practices of choreography, decided five years ago to start teaching the piece to young dancers utterly foreign to the world of hip-hop in a process called “transmission”. After a first adaptation in China in association with the Beijing Modern Dance Company, the choreographer chose India for the second transmission of Récital, this time with eight young dancers from The Danceworx Repertory Company.

About Mourad MerzoukiA major figure of the French hip-hop scene since the early 1990s, dancer and choreographer Mourad Merzouki works at the junction of several disciplines: in addition to exploring different styles of hip-hop, he experiments with circus, acrobatics, martial arts, visual arts and live music. Merzouki's first independent work, KÄFIG – which means "cage" in Arabic and German – was staged at the Rencontres Urbaines de la Villette in Paris in 1998. The name later became this of the dance company, as an oxymoron signaling the choreographer's open-mindedness and his refusal to get locked into a single style. Since he founded his company in 1996, Mourad Merzouki has choreographed fifteen works, most of which are still touring around the world today.

Nos Solitudes Our SolitudesCompagnie A.I.M.E. | Contemporary Dance
Description of the ShowNos Solitudes is like a continuous free fall in which a woman's body is suspended into space, with different cables and pulleys attaching it to widely-spaced weights and counterweights, weaving through the space and triggering some of the dance movements. The suspended body has an entirely different relationship to space and to gravity itself, changing the experience of solitude into a new, moving frame of reference. In Nos Solitudes, the dance teeters a bit towards scenic metaphor, inviting the spectator inside the suspended state: a suspension of reality, of our troubles, our pains and what binds us to them. The piece encourages each spectator to really listen to him or herself in this airborne work, like stepping off a cliff into the void, being open to really listening to oneself, to trust one's gut, to go forward.

Discussion
Noted cultural historian and writer, Dr. Alka Pande leads a dialogue on dance in India around Dr. Shobha Deepak Singh’s tome, “Dancescapes: A Photographic Journey” alongside other luminaries and experts in the field.
Residence of the French Embassy in India
In the light of the presentation of the book Dancescapes: A photographic Journey, released by Roli Books in 2013, this programme seeks to open a discussion on the evolution of the Indian dance scene and the strong links that have connected tradition and modernity. This conversation segment will focus on the dynamics and refrains of this richly evolving scene and its future. Shobha Deepak Singh’s work documents the journey of dance in post-independence India, from traditional to modern to contemporary dance. She has focused on legends of the likes of Kelucharan Mahapatra, Birju Maharaj, Sonal Mansingh, Uma Sharma right until contemporaries such as Akram Khan, Aditi Mangaldas and Astad Deboo amongst others. The past decade and more has witnessed much transformation of the cultural scenario in the country in practically every domain. The second edition of the festival DanSe DialogueS provides a perfect pretext and context to dissect and explore this with people who have keenly observed and studied the growth of dance in India. The French Ambassador in India, H.E. Mr. François Richier will host this special evening at the Residence of France.

Paradis, created in 1997, is the ballet that revealed the style and flair of the Montalvo – Hervieu company. It is a dance performance made sublime by inventiveness and sheer joy, driven by an enthusiasm that blends genres and cultures: hip-hop, classical ballet and African dance. Kind of a musical, visual and danced collage, this choreography conjures up all sorts of universes and imaginaries. It is one of the French contemporary dance pieces that was the most shown in the world.
