The footsteps symbolizes fear that was heard through out the novel by all the characters and all the fear and pain fades away.

PLOT SUMMARYSix carts carry fifty-two people to the guillotine.

Carton and the seamstress reach the guillotine.

The Vengeance and other women are wondering where Madame Defarge is because she’s about to miss seeing Darnay being beheaded.

As the guillotine begins to crash, the crowd counts the number of heads that has been beheaded.

The seamstress clings to Carton and tells him how he is an angel sent to her to be with her.

PLOT SUMMARY CONT.

Carton comforts her and tells her that she’s going to a place with no suffering.

They kiss, and she steps up to the guillotine before Carton.

As Carton steps up to the platform, he has some thoughts going through his head.

He sees: a nation rising out of bloodshed and ashes at this time, he sees the Manette’s and a son of Lucie whom she names after him, he sees a better life of his through Lucie’s son and finally he reflects that his actions right now are by far one of the best actions of his life.

LITERARY DEVICESImagery: “Some, seated with drooping heads, are sunk in silent despair;…” (385)-You can tell the uneasiness of the crowd seeing this harsh and terrible scene.

Simile: “In front of it, seated in chairs as in a garden of public diversion, are a number of women, busily knitting.” (387)-This is comparing how the women are sitting in chairs as if they were in a public garden.

LITERARY DEVICES CONT.

Repetition: “It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have done; it is a far, far better rest that I go to, than I have ever known.” (390)-These are the last thoughts of Carton’s before he sacrifices his life for Darnay. He also thinks to himself that he is doing the right thing by sacrificing his life and it’s one of his best actions that he has ever taken.
