Train to Tangiwai

The diary of Peter Cotterill, Napier, 1953Author David Hill

What this book is about

This book is about a boy’s diary of his life in 1953, his personal life and all of the doings and things that happen to him that year.

The Six Thinking Hats*White: It was about Peter Cotterill’s life in Napier 1953 and what

he went through with school, scouts, family and jobs.

*Blue: This book makes you think about what it would be like in 1953 with little electricity and all those things you would not have had.

*Green: They maybe could do a book on his 1954 diary.

*Red: I felt the boys pain of losing family close to him.

*Black: I did not like that it had each month as a chapter because it took a while to read each day.

*Yellow: I liked how it made you want to read on after each chapter.

The age recommendation

Why I like this book

• I like this book because it makes you think. You understand how he would have felt. The book describes what he has to go through in high school and his love and dislike for a girl who has more than him and his family.

6 reasons to read this book• It keeps you on the edge of your seat.• It keeps peaking then dropping the whole time.• You never want to stop reading and put the book down.• It shows you what life would have been like back then.• You feel like it is you reading one of your old diaries.• It makes a good start for reading David Hill’s collections.
