Survival Strategies: Cooperation and Conflict in Animal Societies. Harvard University Press, Cambridge GORDON TULLOCK School of Law, George Mason University, 3401 North Fairfax Drive, Arlington, VA. 22201-4498, U.S.A. ([email protected]) It is unusual to be able to recommend a book both to serious scholars and beginners. This book would be suitable for both groups. For the newcomer, it is easy to read, lavishly illustrated and covers many animal types of behavior which are amusing. Further, in addition to good writing and entertaining accounts of specific behavior, these are so arranged that even someone who knows nothing about these types of animal behavior patterns will come out of their reading with a very good start in serious knowledge of cooperative and/or predatory behavior by animals. The vocabulary and discussion are a little advanced for people who are just starting on their higher education career. Still I think a teacher willing to devote some time to explanation could use it for freshmen or sophomores. For serious scholars the easy readability is not really necessary, but it is certainly an advantage. In general, people who know the area already will find the primary advantage of this book is in its numerous and interesting examples. But that only introduces the subject. Any careful reader will find here theoretical points he has not previously thought of. Thus, the reader will both be entertained and instructed. It is rare to find a book which can be recommended to such a broad spectrum of readers.
