ENVIRONMENTWe know how important it is to look after our planet for our future generations, which is why we love being members of the Woodland Trust Carbon Capture Scheme. In the production of our Tide Collection magazines 16m2 of native woodland is created every month.

The Carbon Capture Scheme helps us mitigate our carbon emissions by planting trees right here in the UK. We’ve helped fund the planting of 250,000 already! Each tree planted will grow into a vital carbon store, helping us reduce our environmental impact.

The UK is one of the most nature-depleted countries in the world. Working with Woodland trust helps us to protect the precious wildlife habitat that remains and plant the trees needed to create new homes for creatures big and small.

HEALTH MATTERS. AUGUST WORKING IN THE COMMUNITY DURING STRANGE TIMES!Ali Cherry - Parish Nurse Aldeburgh

Well, what a strange few months it’s been! I’ve worked in Aldeburgh in my current role as Parish Nurse for 8 years, but this last few months has really challenged the way I work.

Everyone has been in lockdown, but life doesn’t stop happening. People are still ill with things other than Covid , folk are still grieving for loved ones no longer with them, people are still struggling with mental illness, dementia and loneliness and many other things. It was for that reason that I wanted to continue to support these folk in whatever way I could.

As my Friendship Friday group had to cease, my Monday Carers group had to stop and my home visits also, I had to think of new ways of working and different ways of supporting people.

Instead of the more traditional home visits I’ve been making a lot of telephone support calls, fi nding out how people are coping, making sure they’ve got food, giving health advice and referring on to other agencies where necessary . Help from the many volunteers from Aldeburgh Good Neighbours scheme and the boxes of groceries from the council have been a lifeline to many and so appreciated.

I’ve got to know those that need regular ongoing support and those that just need a friendly phone call now and then and perhaps someone to access items from shops that they need and are unable to get locally, checking up on folk from windows, doorways and back gardens!

I’ve desperately been trying to stay on top of the government advice and restrictions in order to be a source of knowledge for those who are unable to access

the internet and those who are confused as to what we are and are not allowed to do now....which has been a challenge given how often it changes!

Many garden visits have been made, conversations through windows, on pathways, emails and texts...BUT nothing compares to holding someone’s hand as they receive bad news, putting a hand on a shoulder or giving a hug as they mourn for a loved one. We take these things so much for granted and miss them so much when they’re needed but aren’t “allowed”.

However, we’ve tried to spread a little joy and hope where we can. Flowers have been left on doorsteps, cards with messages of hope and reassurance have been posted and even a few cakes have been delivered! As my daughter was not at school, she even came with me one day to do a few impromptu fl ute concerts at ends of pathways...it put a smile on some faces.

As time has gone on some have really struggled with the social isolation, no longer able to meet friends at lunch clubs or for a friendly game of Scrabble. Some may see no one for days on end, unable to go out for fear of catching the virus. Now things are slowly easing it’s a case of trying to encourage and support folk in trying to go out for walks, or go back to getting their own shopping or meeting up with friends again, or helping a carer by taking a loved one on a socially distanced walk. Hopefully this way of working won’t be forever, but no doubt the community of Aldeburgh will carry on adapting and helping in whatever ways we can until we can see some kind of normality again!

For any more info on parish nursing you can visit: https://www.parishnursing.org.uk/

Or you can call me or email me on: 07870946475. [email protected]

Aldeburgh Parish Nursing Service is funded and run by Aldeburgh Baptist Church with help from local grants and fund holders for which we are very grateful.

We are now open seven days a week again: from 9.30 to 5.30 on Mondays to Saturdays, and from 10.30 to 5.30 on Sundays.

We are still delivering to the vulnerable or shielding in the local area, hence the slightly earlier closing time.

We have a brilliant system, whereby you sanitise and put on our very fetching white cotton gloves and become a rare books curator, Marcel Marcaux, Michael Jackson, whatever you choose. These you leave at the exit door and we launder every evening. An elegant solution.

It’s lovely to have the shop open again and we look forward to seeing our friends and customers again, albeit through a screen and a mask.

John & Mary, Aldeburgh Bookshop

The Aldeburgh Society Committee continues to hold meetings (virtually) and continues to monitor and comment on planning applications.

We are hoping to hold the AGM at some point but there is no regulatory problem with this being delayed. The annual accounts have been approved by the Committee and are now on our website. http://www.aldeburghsociety.org.uk/

We continue to update our members about Aldeburgh Services and information and to direct queries to the Town Council which is working hard to coordinate the response to Covid-19.

We corresponded with the Peninsula Practice about medical provision in Aldeburgh. We certainly think things

are improving and will continue to improve as the Covid-19 restrictions are gradually removed. The correspondence and Dr Crockett’s video are on our website.

We await the decision of the Planning Inspectorate as to if and when it plans to hold virtual hearings into the Scottish Power EA1N and EA2 windfarm projects planning applications. We opposed the idea to move to virtual hearings as unworkable and inappropriate and responded accordingly.

EDF Sizewell C

EDF has gone ahead (despite our objection and that of many others that a delay was needed because of the Covid-19 restrictions) and submitted its application for a development consent

order (DCO). We will be formulating the Aldeburgh Society’s detailed response over the next month.

Aldeburgh Society Talks

We are hoping to arrange some virtual talks in the autumn.

Committee Members

We are always looking for new members and people interested in joining our committee so please get in touch if you are interested.

Also anyone with ideas about potential speakers or with questions, suggestions or ideas should email us on [email protected]

BOOK REVIEW - THE BELL IN THE LAKE by Lars MyttingThe church bells of the town of Butangen in Norway are steeped in a blend of history, religion and superstition.

Called ‘The Sister Bells’ by the townspeople, they were crafted in the sixteenth century by Eirik Hekne, to commemorate conjoined twin sisters Gunhild and Halfrid, and thank God for answering his prayers for the mercy of them dying together. The bells were said to ring sweeter than others, and to ring spontaneously to warn the town of great danger.

By the eighteenth century, the Sister Bells are still ringing beautifully, but the church is in a bad state; it is not big enough for the expanding town, and no longer able to protect worshippers from the biting

Norwegian winter. It is the aim of the new pastor, Kai Schweigaard, to give the townspeople and modern and serviceable alternative. The money can be raised by selling the old church to be reconstructed in Dresden, but the deal involves the sale of the Sister Bells. Astrid, a descendant of the Hekne family, is determined to do anything in her power to save them.

This atmospheric and descriptive historical novel is the first in a trilogy by Scandinavian author Lars Mytting, best known for the instructional book Norwegian Wood.

SNAPE MALTINGS AND THE RED HOUSE ARE NOW RUN BY BRITTEN PEARS ARTS

At Snape Maltings and The Red House, lockdown happened at a time when we were just over a week away from the long-planned unifi cation of the two charities – one with a focus on musical performance, the other with a heritage remit – founded by Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears. Working remotely, we completed the merger on 31 March, creating one new organisation and charity, Britten Pears Arts. The names of our sites, Snape Maltings and The Red House, remain the same. For more, see brittenpearsarts.org

Visit Snape Maltings and The Red House

Explore a creative home where music

was written and performed, art collected and two lives shared: Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears. With safety measures in place, The Red House is welcoming visitors into the exhibition space and Britten and Pears’ house, while the tranquil garden, with its fl owerbeds, lawns and many shady spots, provides the perfect setting for a picnic. We are open Thursdays to Sundays 11am – 3pm. Find out more at brittenpears.org.

At Snape Maltings you can visit the spacious House & Garden and Food Hall shops, where you can also fi nd favourite items from all our other shops including stationery, beautiful toys and boutique clothing. You can also relax in the Concert Hall Café, with its panoramic view over the Alde Estuary, or eat at one of the outdoor tables right next to the reeds.

The shops are open Monday – Sunday 10am-4pm.

The Concert Hall Café is open Monday – Saturday 10am-5pm, Sunday 10am-4pm.

You can also book an hour-long River Trip from Snape Maltings Quay along the River Alde, abundant with wildlife and with stunning views. Times vary – please see the website. Find out more at snapemaltings.co.uk.

What about the Snape Proms in August? The government has recently announced that outdoor events with physical distancing can go ahead. We will not be able to put on a full Snape Proms season but we are busy putting together some great events for later in August. To keep up to date with our plans visit snapemaltings.co.uk.

ALDEBURGH CINEMALIGHTS, CAMERA AND NEARLY ACTION…

We look forward to welcoming you back to our beautiful Cinema in early August. There will be a diverse and entertaining programme which we hope will appeal to everyone and bring some much needed cheer.

It has been a surreal time and I am sure like all of us here, you have found the last few months challenging. We’ve all been worried about the health and welfare of our families and friends. To help keep

our supporters, customers and staff safe, we are working on a number of changes. This will include social distancing, allocated seating for all shows with reduced capacity, improved ventilation in the auditorium, a separate entrance and exit, hand gel stations and increased cleaning during and after all screenings. Our Cinema will be different but we are committed to making it safe whilst retaining the unique experience.

With this in mind, we can’t promise to roll out the red carpet, (we do have some charming social distancing fl oor stickers)

but we can promise a very warm and safe welcome.

Thank you for all the support we have received, it’s fundamental to the Cinema’s future. We look forward to seeing you all again soon and please keep an eye on our website, social media and email newsletter for further updates.

The cinema will be reopening on Saturday 1st August. Hurrah! Check the website for more information. Book for showings in advance on 01728 454884 (10am -12) aldeburghcinema.co.uk

East Suffolk Council is partnering with East Suffolk’s Citizens Advice services to support residents with money worries. The aim is to direct people to Citizens Advice where free and confi dential advice is available. There is a dedicated phone line for the campaign (given below) and lines are open fi ve days a week.

For many people in our community the last few months have been hard. The pandemic has had an unprecedented impact on people’s jobs, incomes and living situations. Initially the fi nancial support provided by the government and some companies has been a life saver. However, these are now coming to an end.

Chiara Saunders, head of Citizens Advice Leiston, Saxmundham and District, emphasised the importance of planning ahead:

“The fi nancial support being provided by companies and fi nancial institutions during Covid has been a life saver for some people. However, these bills aren’t being written off, they’re being delayed. So people need to plan ahead. Getting advice immediately – before bills pile up – will help ensure people are ready to cope as payment holidays

are lifted.”

What might you expect if you ring the campaign number below? Mrs. Saunders explains:

“You will be referred to your nearest Citizens Advice offi ce who will look at your whole situation - income, expenditure and fi nancial worries. They will then advise you of the best course of action for your own personal situation.”

Mrs Saunders noted that there some new sources of support have opened up that many people are not aware of. She says:

“Citizens Advice Leiston Saxmundham and District works closely with ESC and many organisations in the community. We are therefore aware of the range of fi nancial and other support that might benefi t people who have debts or cannot pay bills.”

If you, or anyone you know, is worried about money please contact us. Or if you just want a bit of help contacting your

lenders, your credit card company or your suppliers, then please be in touch too. You can phone or send an email.

Amid the continuing coronavirus situation, we wanted to update you on our current position.

The health of our audiences, artists and team members is our biggest priority and following the Government’s most recent announcement, Jubilee Hall will remain closed until further notice. We will continue to monitor the situation and follow direction given by the Government. As soon as we are able, we will be letting you know about our upcoming programme and schedule of events.

The fi nancial impact of Covid-19 on Jubilee Hall is a signifi cant and

serious threat. As a charity, we receive no external or regular funding. Nevertheless, we are committed to getting through this and are doing our best to entertain you while we’re closed with a programme of online ‘events’. You can fi nd out more about these on the News page of our website www.aldeburghjubileehall.co.uk and through our social media channels.

We are also planning a special outdoor fundraising event this summer and look forward to sharing details with you on our website and social media channels shortly.

In the meantime, if you are able to

support Jubilee Hall during this diffi cult period and can consider making a donation, please head to the Support Us page on our website or alternatively email [email protected].

Thank you for your support and co-operation during these diffi cult times. We look forward to welcoming you back to Jubilee Hall just as soon as we can.

July 2020

For the makers of the Suffolk Craft So-ciety, their 50th Anniversary Year has not turned out quite as expected. Many of its designer craft-makers have been busier than ever during lockdown creating remarkable and original work, both experimenting and drawing inspira-tion from their nearby surroundings and looking at nature with a less hurried eye.The Society’s much-loved six-week Sum-mer Exhibition simply proved impossible to mount this year. So, two new initiatives have emerged from the Covid gloom aimed at offering a feast for the eyes for all lovers of contemporary craft. The Virtual Summer Exhibition which will run on the Suffolk Craft Society website www.suffolkcraftsociety.orgover the same period it would have run in Aldeburgh, from Saturday 18 July until Bank Holiday Monday, 31 August 2020. The work of 50 makers will be featured, across many craft disciplines. Those browsing all the attractive and varied work featured, will be able to click easily to the individual makers details and contact them to arrange to buy or commission their latest work. The way it’s designed, it’s easy to fi nd favourites or discover makers less familiar. The Society will also run three weeks of Pop-Up Markets in the Peter Pears Gallery at 152 Aldeburgh High Street,

changing the mix of makers each week (names attached). 21 makers will take part, seven each week, and there will be plenty of space and provision for visitors to view and enjoy the Markets safely. Craft items on show will include ceram-ics, jewellery, printmaking, woodworking, glass and textiles. The Markets will be open daily from 10am – 5pm, except Thursdays when the cast changes, and run from Friday 7 August until Wednesday 26 August. Admission is free.

Aldeburgh Library Foundation (ALF) has just completed provisional plans to hold classes in the Autumn after 4 months temporarily ceasing our programme. These will be held with suitable arrangements to meet Government guidelines in our newly refurbished space:

• There will be suitable spacing between chairs

• Some students may be able to join by zoom technology

• The sessions will last 90 minutes, with no tea/coffee break

• Students may bring their own bottle of water/refreshment

• Cleaning can take place thoroughly between sessions

Some tutors have continued to meet their students by zoom technology (Spanish and Italian) or by video (exercise). Janet Dolan, our Adult

Education Organiser, has kept in touch with all tutors, and they are all willing to continue. Her successor, Jonathan Hodrien, is already planning the programme for next January. We all look forward to meeting returning and new tutors and students.

A provisional programme has gone out by email, or is available in the library, for all courses starting from Monday, 7th September.

THE SPIRIT OF ALDEBURGH CARNIVAL LIVES ON!

The last time that the Aldeburgh summer season did not feature a carnival was in 1949 – the first event after the second world war taking place in 1950. Since then the carnival has been a constant highlight. The dedicated team of volunteers was all set to stage the 78th carnival before the impact of the Coronavirus pandemic meant that, with a heavy heart, the decision was taken to cancel.

During its long history, the carnival has evolved into three days of fun and frolics winning 2018 the Norfolk and Suffolk Family Tourism Event of the Year Award. Sadly, this year the weekend will be not feature a Saturday music event, duck races on the yacht pond, children’s sports on the green or the 10k mini marathon on Sunday. Carnival Monday, which would have been 17 August, will be without a carnival procession, the magical Chinese lantern procession or a fabulous firework display.

Determined to keep the spirit of the carnival living on, organisers are staging a virtual carnival instead. Supporters can enjoy:

A film of the very successful event held last year will go out live at Mid-day on Saturday, 15 August on Youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCvmGFiChXISWxwDPncwdR8w/featured

The build-up to Aldeburgh Carnival traditionally features a children’s poster competition organised in partnership with the primary school. This popular event for children will take place electronically, with a theme of “See you next year”. All entries will be added to the carnival website www.aldeburghcarnival.com and prizes will be awarded for the best entries in a range of age categories. Entries and queries can be directed to [email protected].

An Online Raffle will take place in lieu of a Silent Auction event this year. This will feature a unique lot – Ed Sheeran LP “No. 6” – signed by the artist himself, and donated directly to Aldeburgh Carnival. To win this rare piece of music history raffle tickets are £5 each, and proceeds will be donated to the Aldeburgh Community Nurse – a service that provides front-line nursing care. Aldeburgh Carnival Committee are pleased to support this vital facility. Without the local community, there would be no Carnival, and ticket purchases will really will make a difference. The link to the raffle is www.32auctions.com/AldeburghCarnival2020. The raffle will be drawn on Monday 17th August – what would’ve been Carnival Monday.

The ever popular ‘Spot the Window’ competition will take place throughout August. The entry form can be

downloaded free from the carnival website and the winner will win £25. Entrants will have to stroll through the town with an eagle eye to spot items that shouldn’t be in the window display of those premises taking part – all of whom will be displaying a bright poster advertising their support. Businesses in Aldeburgh are always vital to the success of the carnival, providing generous sponsorship and support. Hopefully, this competition will encourage everyone to see what they have on offer and buy local.

Aldeburgh Carnival also depends on many local organisations to help them stage this huge event and they depend on financial support from the carnival. The carnival will make limited funds available to continue this support, recognising that many local organisations and charities will be struggling at this difficult time.

In 1950 a public meeting was held to decide whether or not a carnival should be held that summer. The room was packed to overflowing and voted unanimously in favour. Providing it is safe to do so, Aldeburgh Carnival is determined to come back with a bang in 2021 when the event will be held on the 14th, 15th and 16th August.

Aldeburgh Museum reopened its doors on July 11th to visitors after 3 months of closure. A lot of work has gone into making the museum Covid secure and compliant with Government guidance. Some of the measures to protect staff, volunteers and visitors include timed entry and a pre-booking system, a Perspex screen, hand sanitiser to be used on entry and available for use throughout the museum, cashless payments, a one-way system and the mandatory wearing of face coverings. If you’ve forgotten yours or don’t have one, then you can buy one for £1. Some of the manual interactive displays have been removed for the time being, however your receipt allows you free entry for up to 1 year by which time the museum hopes to have them back on display.

Aldeburgh Museum fi rst reopened its doors in October having undergone a

major refurbishment and then, like many other businesses, was forced to close in March because of Covid-19, furloughing two staff. During lockdown, the museum kept people entertained with making a family of museum mice, a story writing competition, newsletters and quizzes. Fiona Lewington, Learning Offi cer said ‘Making the mice and dressing each one was great fun and helped to maintain the museum’s profi le on social media’. Emma Chichester Clark and Emma Close Brooks (local children’s authors and illustrators) and Sue Osben of Aldeburgh Library judged the story writing competition.

Visitors can reserve their entry time via the museum’s website where there is lots more

information about what to expect when you visit:

Tony Bone, Chair of Trustees said ‘It was sad that we had to close so soon after the refurbishment but many of our volunteers are over 70 and so fall into the vulnerable category. We are thrilled that we have now been able to reopen and have put measures in place to protect people’s health whilst preserving the visitors’ experience.”

It has been a strange and uncertain time for us all since the Covid 19 pandemic stripped us of our routines and choices. Many of us have stepped off the daily treadmill or left the rat race behind and had time to refl ect on what is important in our lives.

The cult of celebrity and self serving egotism seems to have slipped way down the list of what is essential. Instead there has been a growing awareness of the many people, often very poorly paid who quietly go about their daily business making our lives easier to manage. In addition, wonderful volunteers have stepped up with numerous acts of kindness to support the housebound and those shielding in isolation who would otherwise have found daily life impossible to cope with.

We can all list numerous caring people who should be publicly recognised for the work they are doing in keeping us safe and well, and in a special celebration at Aldeburgh Hospital recently grateful thanks were given to the NHS Key Workers who are at the forefront of helping the poorly recover from coronavirus.

A generous donation was given to enable Blacksmith Tom Moye (Woodbridge) to sculpt an elegant and very pertinent piece entitled ‘Key Worker’ which hangs on the wall close to the entrance doors.

This celebration was particularly poignant because all the hospital staff are only too aware of both the strength and fragility of human life as some of them battled with the disease themselves and lost one of their own team to coronavirus. While they have chosen their jobs because they are caring people, they could never have expected to be risking their own lives caring for those felled by this devastating illness.

Many of the staff gathered round the sculpture as Rev’d Nicky Winter, the Hospital Chaplain, blessed it and eloquently described how every member of the hospital family including cooks, cleaners, administrative staff,

delivery people and ambulance drivers have pulled together to support the frontline nurses.

Tisha Morelos, Modern Matron, then thanked Tom for his beautiful sculpture saying that, as frontliners, the hospital staff were risking their lives caring for those they knew and loved as well as the many they had never met before but who needed their tender ministrations - a comforting word or a hand held. Without the many kindnesses shown by others, their work would be signifi cantly harder and Tom’s sculpture shows the staff that they are in all our thoughts. Tisha concluded by presenting Tom with a bottle of whisky from The Hospital League of Friends.

Perhaps one of the many things to emerge from this global pandemic will be a gentler, kinder, less judgmental period of adjustment to life in a new normality where people are never too busy to offer a helping hand.

If I had to describe this year in one word I think I’d pick ‘unexpected’ and I don’t mean the pandemic, which should not really have been a surprise to any of us. We have just been lucky up until now that the other various microbial candidates such as Ebola, SARS and MERS were successfully stopped before they reached us.

Of course, we have had to close down the Gardening Club in terms of meetings and outings for the duration. Not only are we still banned from holding meetings but a large proportion of our membership fall into the older age group and are thus more vulnerable. It seems probable that even if we don’t have a serious ‘second wave’ outbreak, there will be an ongoing low level of disease circulating until a vaccine becomes available and then of course the roll out of such a vaccine will take more months before it gets to all of us.

Rather than dither about, the Gardening Club committee have decided to stay closed until the new year when we hope we will be able to restart. We only managed two meetings early this year and our fi nances are healthy so we have also decided to roll membership over to next year, so if you have already paid up you will not have to pay again until 2021.

In order to keep in touch with members I have been sending out a rather irregular e-mail covering news of members, topics of garden interest (like where to get compost) and the progress of my own garden through the season so far. I will try to keep that going for the rest of the year, and needless to say welcome any contributions or news from members.

The real surprises to me this year have been little side effects of the lock down. Who knew fi ve year old pea seeds would germinate? How easy it is too grow chard, beetroot and mizuna as salad leaves on the kitchen windowsill. I have made quite appealing looking pots of vegetables, chard, purple fl owered French beans and peas as I couldn’t do my usual raid on Ladybird in the spring for bedding.

Two lots of seed I bought have not turned out as I expected. I have grown a lot more annual bedding seeds than usual. Nicotiana ‘Starlight Dancer’ is shorter than billed, but that is a frequent result on our poor soil. It has turned out to be quite similar to the species N. langsdorfi i which is an elegant and very tall species with very long lime green tubes with a small green fl ower bell on the end. Starlight Dancer has started fl owering at 9 inches tall but will get taller I think. The ‘green bell’ is more like

a creamy white star but keeps the lime green tube and the overall appearance is dainty and elegant. Many Nicotiana are highly scented in the evening, I must trot out and have a sniff.

Courgette seed that I got rather late on-line from DT Brown is producing short slightly tubby green courgettes that are reluctant to grow longer than about 4 inches. I usually pick when they are small but that usually requires continual vigilance as they seem to go from fi nger size to marrow overnight. Very odd.

GARDENING NOTES - SURPRISES

BROWSERS BOOKSHOP (WOODBRIDGE) HAS MOVED

Books have been a joy and a refuge for so many of us in the past few months, and bookshops have responded to the recent challenges of lockdown in many ways.

In Woodbridge, Browsers Bookshop has remained open throughout this time, albeit at a distance, taking orders by phone and email and delivering or mailing to customers.

Now that the shop can open its

doors for browsing once again, it is thriving in its new location at 70 Thoroughfare, a few doors up from its former premises. Open seven days a week, fi nd out more at www.browsersbookshop.com or call 01394 388890.

For booklovers who still need to choose their reading matter from the comfort of their home, there are reviews and recommendations for

books to read and authors to follow, as well as a thoughtful and positive message available in a weekly e-newsletter, with details at www.moreaboutbooks.com

Note: the moreaboutbooks.com website and e-newsletter is the initiative of Catherine Larner of Browsers who co-hosts the book club on the Afternoon Programme with Lesley Dolphin on BBC Radio Suffolk.

As part of plans to tackle climate change, town and parish councils in East Suffolk are being encouraged to plant trees in their communities.

Since declaring a climate emergency in 2019, East Suffolk Council has established an Environment Task Group which meets quarterly to consider what action needs to be taken to meet the Council’s challenging target of becoming carbon neutral by 2030.

One of the group’s fi rst initiatives is to enable town and parish councils to plant trees in their local area.

Cllr James Mallinder, East Suffolk’s cabinet member for the Environment, said: “Trees are essential in our fi ght against climate change as not only

do they absorb carbon, they can help to reduce pollution levels and prevent fl ooding. Native woodland also provides a haven for wildlife.

“Planting trees is a small but hugely effective way for communities to make a difference and we want to encourage people to get involved. It is however essential that planting takes place in appropriate locations, meaning the trees can be properly cared for and giving them the best chance of reaching maturity.”

Any town or parish council, or community group, wishing to plant trees is encouraged to contact their district councillor to determine whether there is any East Suffolk-owned land which would be suitable for planting. If land is not suitable for

tree planting, it may be possible for the land to be allocated for rewilding or to become a wildfl ower meadow.

Tree planting schemes can be supported through East Suffolk councillors’ individual Enabling Communities Budgets, with trees available through third party organisations.

East Suffolk Council is supporting BBC Radio Suffolk’s ‘Planet Suffolk’ campaign which encourages people to create spaces for wildlife in their gardens and to get involved in other environmental activities. More details at www.facebook.com/planetsuffolk
