September Book Project Dear Parents and Students, Each month your child will be doing a book project and at home writing assignment to a prompt that relates to the assigned reading genre of the week. There are two parts to every project; a project piece and a writing piece. In this packet you will find the following: #1- The Book Project
• Book Project Pacing Guide- This will help your child pace themselves during the month to ensure that the book project does not get put off until the last minute. It outlines what should be done each week to help students learn time management with long-term assignments.
• Book Project Directions-For the book project, students will be “Bagging the Elements” of their book and presenting each to the class as they describe how each items represents/relates to the book.
• Book Project Rubric-This rubric will be the one that I will be using to assess the presentation.
#2- The Writing Project • Writing Prompt and Directions- Included in the packet is the writing prompt and
directions. Each paragraph is outlined for what it should include. • Writing Rubric- There is a writing rubric that is aligned to 4th grade Common Core
Standards for narrative writing. Please have your child self-assess prior to their project due date.
Book Genre Projects Common Core Standard Correlation CCSS.ELA- Literacy. RL.4.1 *Refer to details and examples in text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text CCSS.ELA- Literacy. RL.4.2 *Determine a theme of a story, drama, or poem from details in the text; summarize the text. CCSS.ELA- Literacy. RL.4.3 *Describe in depth a character, setting, or event in a story or drama, drawing on specific details in the text.

Book Talk Pacing Guide
You will have about a month to do each book project. Here is a pacing guide that will help you to stay on track and complete your book talk with plenty of time left to perfect it. My book talk presentation is on _________________________________________

Week 2 September 9th- September 12th
! Continue reading my book ! Mark my favorite part with a post-it so I
can remember where it is. ! Start noticing any themes that are in
the story (For example, friendship, courage, loss, coming of age, etc..) and marking them with a post-it to use later in your presentation
! Start thinking of items that you can put in your bag that represent the characters
Week 3
September 15th- September 19th (Work on Book Talk Project)
! Continue reading the book if you are
not finished. Try to be finished by Wednesday, September 17th
! Begin preparing your Book Project presentation
Week 4
September 22nd- September 26th (Write Narrative)
! Work on your first draft of your
narrative ! Reread and revise on your own ! Edit with a parent ! Write your final draft of your narrative
Week 5- Book Project and Essay Due!

Bag the Elements Book Project
Directions: Find a brown grocery bag, gift bag, pillow case, lunch bag, etc. (be creative!) Put an item in your bag to represent each element of the story. Fill out the planning sheet below. It will help you retell the story. Class Presentation: You will take the items out of your bag one at a time to tell about your story’s elements when you share with the class.

Bag the Elements Narrative Writing Prompt
Writing Directions: Have you ever read a book and thought about what would happen if the main character did something different? Or…
• I wonder what would happen if this happened instead of what was the author choose?
Now YOU are the writer and you get the chance to change the story! Pick a main event and choose to do something different! How does this affect the story and its outcome? Continue the story from where the main character’s “path” changed. Follow the format below. Write a fictional narrative where you continue the story from page ______ Be sure to
• establish a narrator during your version • organize the sequence of at least 2 events • use dialogue and descriptions in your writing.
(Students should use correct capitalization, commas, and quotations. Students should also focus on choosing words and phrases to convey ideas precisely and use punctuation for effect.)
