THANK YOU FOR

LIVING UNITEDThanks to your generous support of United Way of the Capital Region, you have not only changed lives for the better, you have also inspired others to follow your lead. As a Leader in Giving, you set the bar for charitable giving in the Capital Region.

In 2016, United Way of the Capital Region raised $11,010,644 to support programs and services in our community. At the same time, our United Way convened expert community task forces to help create potential solutions and strategies around our region’s most pressing issues in health, education and income. Pilot projects will be launched this year.

While all projects will be limited in scope of area initially, they are scalable to ensure they can grow to serve people in rural, suburban and urban parts of our community. United Way will continue to support basic needs services.

Now, more than ever, our United Way is meeting its mission to improve life in the Capital Region. We are grateful for outstanding supporters – like you – who help make our work possible.

Thank you for being a leader; thank you for LIVING UNITED!

The mission of United Way of the Capital Region is to improve lives in Cumberland, Dauphin and Perry counties by identifying the most pressing community needs, finding solutions to those needs, and demonstrating how these solutions are making a difference.

United Way Worldwide created the United Way Tocqueville Society in 1984. Today, the Society is one of the world’s most prestigious institutions for individuals who are passionate about improving peoples’ lives and strengthening communities.

In 1987, United Way of the Capital Region created our local chapter of the Tocqueville Society. The Society is comprised of community leaders who donate at least $10,000 to United Way on an annual basis.

2016 Tocqueville Society Highlights MembershipIn 2016, United Way of the Capital Region’s Tocqueville Society gained 20 new members, bringing the total membership in this elite society to 209. Members contributed a remarkable $3,198,627, representing 29 percent of United Way’s total 2016 annual campaign. Special thanks to Tocqueville Society Chairs Diane Tokarsky and Stephen Moore and Tocqueville Society Vice Chairs Jim and Phyllis Mooney.

First Million Dollar Roundtable DonorsHersha H. and Hasu P. Shah became United Way of the Capital Region’s first Million Dollar Roundtable donors. The couple made a gift of $250,000 to United Way for the 2016 campaign and a commitment to subsequent donations over the next several years. Nationally, nearly 500 extraordinary leaders have made an outright gift of $1 million to United Way or a pledge of $1 million payable over five years.

Tocqueville MatchThe Tocqueville Society Challenge Match, generously sponsored by the Kline Foundation and the McCormick Family Foundation, continues to support the Society’s membership. Nine new members took advantage of the match program.

HUMANITARIAN AWARD

2016 Humanitarian Award Recipients: Drs. Neelima and Mukul ParikhUnited Way of the Capital Region’s Tocqueville Society proudly recognized Drs. Neelima and Mukul Parikh of Mechanicsburg with the 2016 Humanitarian Award for their lifetime of inspirational leadership and commitment to changing lives in our community.

Neelima and Mukul Parikh have built their lives on the foundation of family. Their work has changed and saved the lives of thousands of mothers and fathers, sisters and brothers, husbands and wives.

Neelima and Mukul have practiced anesthesiology since 1984 at West Shore Anesthesia and Riverside Anesthesia Associates respectively. Both serve in leadership positions within their profession. Mukul has served as Chairman of the Anesthesia Department at PinnacleHealth System and as President of Central Penn Anesthesia. The couple moved to central Pennsylvania in 1984 after completing their residency in Syracuse, New York.

Since the 1980s, Neelima and Mukul have used their medical talents, as well as their spirit for philanthropy to provide sustained service with tangible results through medical mission trips to parts of Africa, Haiti, India, the Philippines and Thailand. These trips are financed using personal vacation time as well as personal funds. The couple strives to complete two mission trips a year.

In 2013, Neelima and Mukul put their creative approach to solving issues into action when they founded Operation Medical, a nonprofit organization comprised of trained professionals and volunteers committed to providing high quality medical care and education to the most at-risk communities around the globe.

Mukul, president of Operation Medical, along with Neelima, have provided outstanding leadership in creating the vision and scope of the organization. In addition to conducting surgeries, they help secure medical supplies, equipment and pharmaceuticals, financial resources and inspire others to join in this life-changing work.

Both Neelima and Mukul are committed to voluntary systems of service. The couple received the International Voluntary Service Award from the Pennsylvania Medical Society in 2014 and the Distinguished Community

Service Award from the Asian Indian Association of Central Pennsylvania in 2013.

Neelima served as the first female president of the Hindu American Religious Institute (HARI) and on its board of directors. Mukul is president of the Dauphin County Medical Society and former president of the Diplomates Society of Harrisburg - a group of Board Certified Physicians. He has served as chair of the board of HARI, where he also taught Sunday school for 25 years and coordinated youth group activities for a decade.

As soon as they moved to the Capital Region, Neelima and Mukul began contributing to United Way as a way to connect and contribute to the community. Over the years, their generosity has continued to grow. In 2015, Neelima and Mukul became members of La Société Nationale level of United Way’s Tocqueville Society. In 2005, the couple established a private foundation to help support the many educational, health care, religious and community service activities they ardently support.

LA TABLE RONDE DE MILLIONS DE DOLLARS

United Way’s Million Dollar Roundtable honors our most generous philanthropic leaders. Through their consistent and cumulative support, they demonstrate a passionate commitment to building a stronger and healthier community. Nationally, nearly 500 extraordinary leaders have made gifts of $1 million or more to local United Ways, driving impact and transforming lives one child, one adult and one family at a time.

HERSHA H. & HASU P. SHAHHersha Group

La Table Ronde de Millions de Dollars recognizes individuals who contribute $1 million to United Way of the Capital Region.

In 2016, Hersha and Hasu Shah became United Way of the Capital Region’s first Million Dollar Roundtable donors. The couple founded the Hersha Group of Companies in 1984. Over the years, they have grown the company to be a nationally recognized leader in the hospitality industry whose shares are traded on the The New York Stock Exchange.

Hersha and Hasu’s true passion is philanthropy, and they believe the highest purpose they can serve is to give back to their community. The Shahs have donated their time and money to numerous causes. In the Harrisburg area, they have served on the boards of various charitable organizations focusing on health care and community development, and endowed the Hersha H. and Hasu P. Shah Program of Hospitality Management at Harrisburg Area Community College. In their native India, they have built hospitals and funded medical clinics to help underserved communities. In 2005, the couple founded the Shree Krishna Foundation, a charitable trust whose goal is to restore eyesight to one million disadvantaged blind people living in third-world countries.

In 2010, Hersha and Hasu were honored with the National United Way Tocqueville Society Award, the highest honor for volunteers. They joined a distinguished list of previous recipients including former Presidents Ronald Reagan and Jimmy Carter, as well as Bill Gates, Bob Hope, John Glenn and Henry Ford, II. The Shahs are the first local recipients of this prestigious award.

THE HERSHA H. & HASU P. SHAH FAMILY FOUNDATION

OVERVIEWThe Hersha H. & Hasu P. Shah Family Foundation, more commonly referred to as the Shree Krishna Foundation or “SKF”, was established in 2005. One of the non-profit’s primary goals is to facilitate the sponsorship of 1 million cataract surgeries for needy individuals in India and around the World.

From 2013 to 2016 alone, SKF has part-nered with the RNC Free Eye Hospital in Valsad, Gujarat, India to perform over 50,000 successful cataract surger-ies for adults and children who, sadly, would have otherwise endured a life-time of (preventable) blindness.

INVESTING IN EDUCATION• In 2005, the Foundation funded the “Hersha H. and Hasu P. Shah Program of Hospitality and Lodging Management” at Harrisburg Area Community College (HACC), and also established an endowed fund for scholarships and professional development.

• In 2012, created an endowment to The School of Hospitality Business at Michigan State University to provide resources to hospitality interns while he or she gains leadership experience with a hotel managed by Hersha Hospitality Management (HHM).

• Scholarship endowments at York College of PA, Penn State Harrisburg, and Central PA College Business School, several of which benefit minority groups.

MEDICAL OUTREACHIn 2005, the foundation built a hospital in Gujarat, India to benefit the disad-vantaged who do not have access to quality health care. Since the hospital’s inception, the foundation has contin-ued to support the institution as they develop into a full-service, dynamic health care facility. Most recently, the SKF provided a grant to the hospital which allowed them to open an ICU and Dialysis unit in 2015. All services are provided to patients at a rate which is customized specifically to them, based on their income/financial state.

A charitable trust supporting the medical, educational, and scientific needs for the impoverished in India & around the World.

CORPORATE LEADERSHIP GIVING PROGRAM

The Corporate Leadership Giving Program, established in 1997, is the keystone of United Way of the Capital Region’s leadership giving efforts. Participating companies promote leadership giving in their workplaces. They are leaders in their respective industries and in our community.

Organizations on the following pages worked with United Way staff and volunteers to conduct a special solicitation effort of individuals who had the means and interest, and who were identified as Capital Club prospects.

From their 2016 efforts, we recognize the following achievements:

• $3,490,918 was raised through Corporate Leadership Programs.

• 44 organizations participated in the program.

• 68 percent of all leadership donors are employed by organizations that support Corporate Leadership Programs.

WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP NETWORK

2016 HighlightsIn 2016, more than 850 WLN members contributed an incredible $1,375,000 to United Way. WLN continued connecting dynamic women with various networking and volunteering opportunities in our community.

Community Leadership EventsConversations with Women Who Make a Difference events provided an opportunity for members to hear from prominent women in our community and learn more about United Way. Three events were held in 2016:

• The New Members’ Reception, held at the WITF Public Media Center, featured 2016 WLN Chair Valerie Pritchett and Kathleen Pavelko, president and CEO of WITF. Attendees had the opportunity to network and take a behind-the-scenes tour of WITF’s operations.

• The August luncheon featured a panel discussion with Jessica Whitmyer, vice president of finance/controller at Members 1st Credit Union; Diane Tokarsky, chair of constructions and procurement group at McNees, Wallace, & Nurick LLC; and Tina Nixon, vice president of mission effectiveness and chief diversity officer at PinnacleHealth System. The panelists shared their insight on the importance of leadership and philanthropy through life’s journey.

• In October members gathered to learn about the work of United Way’s health, education and income community task forces from a panel of three task force members: Barbara Terry, co-chair of the Health Task Force; Cindy Mortzfeldt, co-chair of the

Education Task Force; and Cyndi Tolsma, member of the Income Task Force. Attendees were one of the first groups to learn about the research, solutions and pilot projects around access to health care, school readiness, and workforce development.

VolunteeringIn 2016, WLN offered several volunteer opportunities for members to make a difference in the Capital Region. • On Day of Caring, WLN members scrubbed, assembled

and organized shelves to get a new food pantry ready for families.

• Prepared side dishes for a Thanksgiving meal for residents and staff of a local family shelter.

• Worked with The Foundation for Enhancing Communities’ Women’s Fund to assemble more than 1,200 snack packs for hungry children in the Capital Region.

• Collected and donated more than 1,000 items for classroom kits for local schools.

Ask the women of United Way of the Capital Region’s Women’s Leadership Network (WLN) how they LIVE UNITED and they will tell you it’s through philanthropy and volunteerism.

BRIDGES SOCIETY

United Way of the Capital Region’s Bridges Society connects a diverse group of emerging leaders through giving and volunteering

2016 HighlightsBridges Society has a million reasons to celebrate 2016! Last year, more than 700 members contributed more than $1,023,000 to United Way of the Capital Region’s annual campaign. Members also volunteered their time to make a difference in the lives of children in our community and enjoyed networking with one another through various engagement opportunities.

Community Leadership Events • A Bridges Breakfast event in the fall featured Gary D. St. Hillaire, president and CEO of Capital BlueCross. • In June, Bridges Society held a networking and volunteering event at Harrisburg Midtown Arts Center.

Members enjoyed great food while assembling 500 dental kits for local children in need. • The ninth Tocqueville Society and Bridges Society Joint Event was held in October at Capital BlueCross

headquarters in Harrisburg and featured socializing, refreshments and farm-to-table food. • In December, 60 Bridges members gathered at Red Sky Café to wrap books and write notes of

encouragement for third grade students at Downey Elementary School. The books were delivered just in time for the holidays.

Volunteering • During United Way’s Annual Youth Day of Caring in April 2016, more than

50 Bridges Society members volunteered side-by-side with approximately 200 local high school students to clean up City Island.

• More than 50 Bridges members shared their love of reading with nearly 75 students from Downey Elementary School during trips to Barnes & Noble in Camp Hill. Volunteers worked with students on a scavenger hunt throughout the store and read with the children. Thanks to Enterprise Rent-A-Car, every child was able to take home a book of their own.
