e open up the story with Hazel (race, who is your average teenagerexceptfor thelittle fact that she's got all sorts of cancer inside her body and her lungs aren't wor%ingvery well.

Hazel is in )upport (roup one day when a new boy catches her eye. ell, to beaccurate, they catch one another's eyes. )oon enough, she and Augustus#aforementioned hot boy$ are flirtatious friends and tal% to each other about everything.

Augustus manages to somehow get through to theauthor and when Hazel emails him, he invites her to come to Amsterdam to discuss theending of the boo%. A fan's dream come true.

In the meantime, Augustus and Hazel's good friend Isaac is losing his eye #the onlyone he has left$ so that he can be cancer*free at long last. )o Augustus surprises Hazel by telling her that he still has his wish #the ish thatthey grant to dying children$ from when he had cancer and lost his leg, and he'dhappily use it to ta%e her to Amsterdam to meet eter /an Houten, reclusive authorofAn Imperial Affliction.Ah, true romance. Hazel of course, is over the moon about thewhole idea, but first she has to convince her hovering, worried parents and hers%epticaldoctors.

0ventually, they manage to get their trip in order and ta%e off into the great un%nownwith Hazel's mother in tow. They go to Amsterdam and have beautiful and romantictimes, but when they meet eter /an Houten, it doesn't e1actly go as planned. 2irst ofall, he's a mean drun%. )econd of all... well actually, no, that's totally it. He's &ust amean drun% and doesn't answer any of Hazel's 3uestions. Hazel is angry and upset, but /an Houten's assistant 4idewi& ta%es her and Augustus out to e1plore Amsterdam. They see Anne 2ran%'s house, where things are %ind of redeemed because she and

Augustus finally %iss. 5oh la la. They go bac% to the hotel room and even steamier

    things happen. -owza.

Augustus then drops a bomb6 his cancer has returned. This is very, very bad. henthey return to Indianapolis, it's clear that Augustus's health is deteriorating and hemight not have much time left. In a heartbrea%ing scene, Hazel and Isaac even sharethe eulogies that they wrote for him. Throughout it all, Hazel is there with Augustus, until the very end.

hen he dies, Hazel is shoc%ed and filled with grief. At his funeral, though, she gives adifferent eulogy than the one she had written him. hy! ell, she realizes that she

needs to deliver something that's tailored to his parents, who are the ones sufferingnow #not him$.

At the funeral, she's shoc%ed to see that eter /an Houten is there. )he tal%s to himand realizes that he wroteAn Imperial Affliction because he had a daughter who diedof cancer. )he's no closer to li%ing /an Houten as a person, but she understands alittle more why he's so tortured and crotchety. )he also learns from Isaac that Augustuswas writing something for her before he died. )he proceeds to go on a %ind of crazysearch for what he's written, which she thin%s might be the alternate ending toAn

Imperial Afflictionthat she wanted so badly. )he also learns that her mother is ta%ingclasses to become a )upport (roup leader, and is relieved that there will be life for herparents after she dies.

At the very end, she learns from 4idewi& that Augustus wrote her a eulogy that he sentto /an Houten. The boo% ends with her reading the eulogy, which states that he hopesthat she's happy with the choices she made.Hazel says that yes, she is happy.
