Book Analysis

I took advice from a print designer on the font to use. He suggested I use something simple such as Univers so as not to detract from the subject. I selected Roboto, which is similar.

The book dimensions were based on what I thought would work well with the image ratio.

Front

cover with

title and

name. It is

important

to choose

a strong

image for

the cover

to capture

the

viewer’s

attention.

Inside

front

cover.

I changed the

project title

from

‘Homeless not

Helpless’ to

‘Tent City’

between

formative and

summative

submission

because the

former carries

too many

connotations.

I chose to have one image per page because having looked at a number of other photo books such as Simon Robert’s ‘Pierdom’ and Martin Parr’s ‘The Last Resort’, this is the layout I like.

I also like

the

composition

with the

angle of the

bed and the

content,

with so

many things

to look at.

I like this

image

because

of the

presence

of the

man in

the bed.

It’s subtle

but

effective.

I wanted to

add some

facts and

figures about

homelessness

in general

and Milton

Keynes in

particular.

I used a

smaller font

for the

Milton

Keynes quote

to help

differentiate

between the

two.

Page 4: Book Analysis · Book Analysis I took advice from a print designer on the font to use. He suggested I use something simple such as Univers so as not to detract from the subject. I

The

person

just

walking

past the

bed in

the

middle of

the street

in this

image

adds to

the

impact.

I like the silhouettes in this picture, but ideally the exposure on the tents would be better.

I considered adding camera settings below the pictures

but decided against it in the end because the book isn’t

just targeted at photographers, but a broader audience

interested in the issue of homelessness.

Page 5: Book Analysis · Book Analysis I took advice from a print designer on the font to use. He suggested I use something simple such as Univers so as not to detract from the subject. I

Although

different

to the

others in

content, I

feel that

this image

is

relevant.

Why is the

sign there

and are

there

public

toilets

available

for use?

The distinct lack of interest in the bedding on the ground adds to the visual

appeal of this image.

Page 6: Book Analysis · Book Analysis I took advice from a print designer on the font to use. He suggested I use something simple such as Univers so as not to detract from the subject. I

The black

and white

analogue

images

are

scanned

darkroom

prints.

The

pavement

lines and

the light

lead the

eye

through

the

tunnels to

each of

the tents.

This

image

would be

improved

with

further

burning

of the

highlights

Page 7: Book Analysis · Book Analysis I took advice from a print designer on the font to use. He suggested I use something simple such as Univers so as not to detract from the subject. I

I like the

range of

tones in

this

image.

The

shopping

trolley

implies

close

proximity

to

shopping

facilities.

An

alternative

take of the

bed

outside

the train

station.

The

person in

the bed is

less

obvious,

but the

apathy in

others is

visually

effective.

Page 8: Book Analysis · Book Analysis I took advice from a print designer on the font to use. He suggested I use something simple such as Univers so as not to detract from the subject. I

The large

chair

fascinates

me and the

juxtaposition

of the food

poster next

to the

homeless

camp is

thought-

provoking. I

also like the

reflections.

I like the

angles in

this image.

With

hindsight I

would

maybe

move the

frame

slightly to

the right to

have the

bottom left

line coming

out of the

corner of

the frame.

Move the frame right to

put this line in the corner?

Page 9: Book Analysis · Book Analysis I took advice from a print designer on the font to use. He suggested I use something simple such as Univers so as not to detract from the subject. I

Utilising

the trail

of

leaves

as a

leading

line.

The

juxtaposition

between

Christmas

jumper and

homelessness

is thought-

provoking.

This image

is one of

some

additional

shots taken

between

formative

and

summative.

Finishing

with a

strong

image. It’s

important

that the

last image

the viewer

sees is a

strong one

to help give

a lasting

positive

impression.

I have a

few

images

of this

camp

which I

like, but

decided

to go

with this

one

because

of the

content

and

context

it

provides.

have

chosen a

film image

for the

back cover

as the

alternative

format

adds

interest.
