BOOK 1 FEATURES

CD AND DVD IN EVERYSTUDENT BOOK

The CD covers the first 58 exercises. From the very beginning, students can model tone production and technique by listening toa professional soloist on their specific instrument! The exercisesare played twice – students can first play along with theprofessional player, and then play “solo” with theaccompaniment track. These accompaniments (on realinstruments, not synthesized) teach phrasing and dynamics, encouraging musicality from the very beginning, while studentsexplore a wide variety of musical styles and cultures – classical, rock, jazz, country and world music!

The CD can also be used as a CD-ROM with a PC or Maccomputer. See pages 4-7 for details on these exciting features.

• SmartMusic® software

• Finale NotePad® software

• Tempo Adjustment software (for play-along tracks)

DVD AND VIDEO!

The DVD offers even more features for student learning. Inaddition to the tools on the CD, the DVD gives each student a start-up video to learn the basics for their instrument – just like aprivate lesson with a teacher! The DVD can also be used with a PC orMac computer for additional features that do not appear on the CD:

• All play-along tracks - for the entire book (with tempo adjustment software)

• Additional, printable Duet and Trio Music (for anycombination of instruments)

• A Band Music Listening Library

See pages 4-7 for more information.

ENHANCED STARTING SYSTEM

Book 1 uses unmeasured Long Tones to establish good toneproduction from the very beginning, and uses Quarter Notes toteach pulse and rhythm. By exercise 14 your students will beplaying well-known melodies and enjoying the excitement ofplaying in the band!

The unique considerations of Horns and Oboes are difficult toaddress using a classroom band method, so we’ve createdspecial pages for these instruments with their own optionalstarting systems. Along with the DVD, their books include twoCDs to play along with the starting system that you choose!

OPTIMUM REINFORCED LEARNING

New material is carefully paced, sequential and immediatelyreinforced. New notes are approached in the easiest ways, thengradually played within wider skips and different rhythms. Eachnew rhythm is introduced as a Rhythm Rap, then repeated on simplepitches, and finally placed in an appropriate melodic setting.

See the sequence on the right to see this reinforced learningtechnique in action.

THEORY, HISTORY, CROSS-CURRICULUM ANDCREATIVITY ... ALL IN THE STUDENT BOOKS!

It’s all right in each student book, correlated with the music andconcepts they are currently learning. This is by far the mostefficient way to meet the National Standards, integrate othersubjects into the music curriculum, and still teach the essentials of music performance.

12 FULL BAND ARRANGEMENTS & A PLANNED CONCERT

Research shows that students are more likely to succeed (andstay in band) if they perform a concert for parents within the first8 weeks. That’s why we’ve created an impressive early concertfeaturing 6 full band arrangements after they’ve learned just 7notes! The concert is the first of the Performance Spotlightfeatures, which include 12 full band arrangements and 2 soloswith piano accompaniment.

RHYTHM STUDIES

The additional Rhythm Studies pages include progressivemeasures of rhythms, which you can use to enhance rhythmicdevelopment at any stage. To make it fun and interesting, theDVD includes infectious percussion accompaniments at varied tempi.

With a quarter-note pulse starting in the first lesson, themotivating Rhythm Raps, and plenty of reinforcement, EssentialElements 2000 students learn new rhythms quickly and easily.

DAILY WARM-UPS & RUBANK® STUDIES

Establish good practice habits, tone and technique with the twosets of Daily Warm-ups included in each book. The RubankScale and Arpeggio Studies cover the four major keys taught inBook 1, all adapted from Rubank’s “best-of-the-best” to expandyour students’ technical skills.

It is part of Symphony No. 9 (“From The New World”) by Czech composer AntoninDvorák (1841–1904). The first known printing of the lyrics and music to The Marines’ Hymn dates from August 1, 1918. An unknownauthor is believed to have taken the opening words of the song from the words on the Marine Corps flag,“Fromthe halls of Montezuma to the shores of Tripoli.” The music was taken from “Genevieve de Brabant,” by theoperetta composer Jacques Offenbach.

Black American spirituals originated in the 1700’s. As one of the largest categories of true American folk music, these melodieswere sung and passed on for generations without being written down. Black and white people worked together to publish thefirst spiritual collection in 1867, four years after The Emancipation Proclamation was signed into law.

THE BASICS OF JAZZ STYLEfrom Essential Elements

for Jazz Ensemble

Accenting “2 and 4”

For most traditional music the important beats in 4/4 time are

1 and 3. In jazz, however, the emphasis is usually on beats 2

and 4. Emphasizing “2 and 4” gives the music a jazz feeling.

174. ACCENTING 2 AND 4 CD Track 47

Jazz Articulations

These are the four basic

articulations in jazz.

Swing 8th Notes Sound Different Than They Look

In swing, the 2nd 8th note of each beat is actually played like the last third of a

triplet, and slightly accented. 8th notes in swing style are usually played legato.

175. SWING 8TH NOTES CD Track 48

Quarter Notes

Quarter notes in swing style are usually played

h d (staccato) with accents on beats 2 and 4.

Syncopation in Jazz When beats are played early (anticipated) or played late (delayed),

the music becomes syncopated. Syncopation makes the music sound “jazzy.”

THE BASICS OF JAZZ STYLEAttacks and ReleasesIn traditional music (Concert In jazz it is common to use a “Doo” attack (soft Band and Orchestra) you use a and legato) to begin a note. It is also common “Tah” articulation to begin a note to end the note with the tongue. This “tongue- and taper the note at the end. stop” gives the music a rhythmic feeling.

1. ATTACKS AND RELEASES

Accenting “2 and 4”For most traditional music the important beats in 4/4 time are 1 and 3. In jazz, however, the emphasis is usually on beats 2and 4. Emphasizing “2 and 4” gives the music a jazz feeling.

Charles Christopher Parker (1920–1955) who was known Dizzy Gillespieto jazz fans as “Bird” grew up in Kansas City. As a young boyhe idolized Count Basie’s star tenor saxophonist, Lester Young.“Bird” became a virtuoso performer on alto sax whose solosdisplayed fire, brilliance, and a keen understanding of theblues. Although he died before he received the recognitionhe deserved, his style became widely studied and imitated.

John Birks Gillespie (1917–1993) was born in South Carolina. While touring with the Teddy Hill Band, he earned the name “Dizzy” because of his clowning andhorseplay. His main influence was Roy Eldridge who was perhaps the most brilliant trumpet soloist of the swing era. In addition to being a great trumpeter,“Dizzy” was an entertaining showman.

Charlie Parker His puffed cheeks and bent horn made him a recognizable figure the world over.
