So, before we get started with the interview, we’re going to ask you five questions about Bono to find out if you’re an actual fan! Are you ready? Ellie: I’m ready! Lisa: All right! Let’s get started! Question number 1: When was Bono born? Ellie: Bono was born on May 10 th 1960. Lisa: Correct! Question number 2: What were his parents’ religions? Ellie: His mother, I believe, was Church of Ireland Anglican and his father was Roman Catholic. Lisa: Correct again! And question number 3: What happened when Bono was fourteen? Ellie: In 1974, very sadly, his mother died. Lisa: Tragic but true. Ok, question number 4: Where did the name ‘Bono’ come from? Ellie: It is a shortened version of Bonavox, which actually means ‘good voice’ in Latin. Lisa: Ok! And question number 5, final question: Where did Bono meet the other band members from U2? Ellie: He met them in school. Lisa: Correct again! All right, Ellie, you are a Bono five, Bono fan. Ellie: I am! Lisa: So let’s talk more about you and Bono! When did you first start liking Bono? Ellie: I really started liking their music when I was a teenager but I started loving them after I went to see them in Cardiff in 2009 in concert. Lisa: That sounds great! What was he like on stage? Ellie: U2 were incredible as a band! The atmosphere was great in the stadium and they really interacted a lot with the audience. There was even a woman they got up on stage to dance with Bono! Lisa: That sounds great! I could take a guess why you like Bono but why don’t you tell us why do you like Bono so much? Ellie: Well, it’s a mixture, really! I love Bono’s voice, I think it’s really expressive; I think it makes the songs really come alive. The songs themselves are really catchy as well but I think what I like most about U2 is the lyrics they use. Première partie Deuxième partie Troisième partie

Lisa: Yeah? What kind of themes does he talk about in the songs?Ellie: Again it’s a huge variety. He writes about really personal themes like the loss of his mother in I will follow.

He writes homages to famous people like Martin Luther King even in MLK and Pride and he even writes about people in war in Miss Sarajevo.

Lisa: Wow, he’s got a wide variety of subjects that he sings about...Ellie: Exactly!Lisa: How about political subjects? What does he...?Ellie: He’s definitely writing about political subjects as well. One of his famous songs is Silver and Gold and I

think one of his most famous ones was written about the Northern Irish conflict, it’s called Sunday Bloody Sunday.

Lisa: Yeah, I think everybody knows that song!Ellie: Yes!Lisa: So he’s talked a lot about political topics but does he ever write love songs?Ellie: He does write love songs! I think my favourite love song by U2 is probably All I want is you.

Lisa: Oh, that sounds pretty good! He tries to help people. Can you tell us about the humanitarian work that Bono does in the world?

Ellie: He does lots and lots of humanitarian work. He’s been involved in three main projects and he’s been nominated for the Nobel Peace prize. The first project was the One Campaign, which campaigned for debt relief and fighting poverty in Africa. The second was a fashion label called Edun, which he started with his wife and the third was Product Red, which is quite famous and raised funds for the global fund for Aids, tuberculosis and malaria.

Lisa: I think what he’s doing is fantastic but not everyone would agree with me. Can you tell me about some people who disagree with what Bono is doing?

Ellie: Some of Bono’s critics might say that he is... He’s implying that Africa needs help from other countries when we send them money, when we raise money to give to charities but I don’t agree with them at all, I think that what he does is incredible for the people of Africa and really makes a difference in their lives.

Lisa: I’m gonna agree with you, Ellie.

That’s about all the time we have for today. Thank you so much for coming out!Ellie: That’s fine!Lisa: Before we go, why don’t you pick a U2 song that we could listen to?Ellie: Oh, I’d really like to hear Beautiful Day, there’s a lot of good memories for me!Lisa: That’s a great choice! All right, everybody! Here’s Beautiful Day by U2 and we’ll see you later!
