It takes up to 48hrs for all services to be marked and this should always be done prior to doing any excavation in the yard. If a survey is not available, you can contact your county for a general plat that would just show lot size and easements.

The backyard is usually the most underutilized space in your home. Right now, you may have the occasional backyard BBQ or your children may play in the yard, but there is little quality family time there because it is empty. Imagine how much time would be spent in your den with no furniture. Now is the time to make a change and turn this space into the most alluring and tranquil addition to your home. You’ll be happy to get out of the confinement that being indoors brings and enjoy outdoor life. An above-ground pool will be the star attraction in your new space. It will be your comfy “sofa” that will cool and refresh you on a hot summer day. It transforms a BBQ lunch into an all-day event that keeps the family together. In order to get the most out of your space, you will need a little planning because moving the pool is not like moving the “sofa”. To make this happen, we have made a simple design kit to help you see the potential of your yard.

At Bonnie and Clyde’s we do not believe you should buy the most expensive pool you can. We believe you should buy the right pool for your needs. Pools come in both round and oval shapes and in a variety of sizes. Round pools will give you much more swim area for your dollar; however, they don’t always fit in the yard. Oval pools cost a little more, but will normally allow you to get a larger pool in a narrow yard. Keep in mind that each city will have its own regulations regarding the placement of the pool in regards to the property lines, easements, and permanent structures. They will also direct you on how close to a power line you can build. Since pool prices don’t increase very much per size, buy a pool that is as big as you can fit, while keeping the aesthetics of your yard. Don’t take your entire yard for the swimming pool. Save some area for landscaping, decking, and other outdoor activities if you plan to have them. Keep in mind however, that it is very rare for someone to say “I wish I bought a smaller pool” and much more common to hear “I wish I bought a bigger pool”.

We have attached some sample drawings, grid paper, and templates to help you design your yard. Making a scale drawing of your yard will make it easier to visually see what you have to work with, but it can also be used to show your city if they require a permit for the pool.

General Guidelines and Design Instructions:The information provided here are just general guidelines and not a universal

code. As previously stated, each city, or county if not located within a city, will have their own regulations that should be acquired before installing your pool. In the State of Texas, there is a free service provided to mark any underground utilities on your property (ie: electric, phone, cable, gas). Call 1-800-DIG-TESS (800-344-8377) to schedule. It takes up to 48hrs for all services to be marked and this should always be done prior to doing any excavation in the yard. If there are lines in the way of the pool, they can sometimes be moved at little or no cost to you. Just contact the company that provides the service of the lines in the way. If you received a survey of the property when you purchased your home, it will be a helpful resource for the location of utility easements, building lines, and property measurements. If a survey is not available, you can contact your county for a general plat that would just show lot size and easements.

1. Pool walls should not be located within 10’ horizontally of any overhead electric lines or within 5’ horizontally of any underground electric line. All electric lines should be marked in red on your scale drawing.2. Pool structure should not be built within any utility easement as access to this space may be required for utility maintenance or upgrades.3. Pools Structure should not be built within 5’ of any permanent structure located on the property. (ie house, covered patio, or storage building)4.. For safety, the yard around the pool should have a minimum of a 4’ fence with self-closing/self-latching gates.

Taking measurements: (the grid paper provided is scaled at 1 block (1/8”) = 1 foot)You can print one of the samples below to write your measurements on as a rough sketch.1. Start with measuring the backside of the house and the distance from the corners to the side fences.2. Next Measure the size and location, in relation to the house, of any existing patio.3. Then measure the outside perimeter of your yard. The distance from the house to the fence on the side will be important to know what equipment can get into the yard for the installation. 4. Measure the size of any other structure in the yard. Pick one corner of the structure and measure to the 2 closest fences or house and closest Fence to obtain placement.5. For any trees, measure from trunk as you would for the structure above.6. Make sure to note the location of any air conditioning equipment or any other obstruction in the yard.Once all measurements have been taken, you can start drawing your yard on the grid paper. Determine the orientation of the paper based on the longest measurement of the Yard, either width or depth. Then layout each item in the same order measured above. Using your survey or plat, add any easements that may be located on the property. Last mark the location of any overhead or underground power lines in red. It is a good idea; if possible, to make a copy of the grid paper after all existing items are on the page. Now you can simply cut out the pool templates and lay them out to see where the best location and size of the pool will be. The pool templates include the minimum of a 12” landscape boarder around the pool. A 15-18” boarder is preferred and it is important to keep grass out of this area to protect the liner from nutgrass. Landscape rocks and plants will help to enhance the appearance of the yard while maintaining this boarder. Make sure to leave space to add decking and any other items you think you may want, even if you don’t intend on adding them right now. It is important to have a total picture of what your finished product will be and see that everything will fit. When you have everything the way you like it, cut out the description tags and add them to the drawing to complete it. When you are ready, simply purchase your pool and make your backyard dream a reality.
