Bonner Training 2010-2011 Th. August 19 Semester Begins Th. August 19 Bonner Overnight Retreat (T: 10 hours) Bonners will engage in low-ropes activities to build trust and communication with one another. We will also review Bonner Common Commitments, develop group agreements, and share personal stories. Bonner Leaders from Notre Dame de Namur University will join us for evening activities. All meals provided. Fri. August 20 Bonner Overnight Retreat (T: 3 hours, S: 3 hours) Bonners will learn about the Critical Service-Learning model and discuss how to work with our supervisors. We will then meet with our Supervisors for 1-2 hours in the afternoon and begin setting goals for the year. Breakfast and lunch provided. Tues. August 24 Bonner On-Campus Orientation (T: 4 hours, S: 4 hours) Bonners will tour Cal Corps office spaces and learn what resources you can use. The Bonner on-line reporting system (BWBRS) and AmeriCorps instructions will be reviewed. All Bonners will also attend a Risk Management workshop and begin developing your volunteer recruitment plan. You will also receive an overview of Education and Poverty in Alameda County and discuss the Healthy Communities Project. Th. Oct. 7 Bonner Thursday (T: 1.5 hours)

Learn about the Johari Window, a tool that helps you understand your interpersonal communication and relationships. This tool is useful in deepening your understanding of your leadership, as well as navigating how to work with others.

Oct. 14 Bonner Thursday (S: 1.5 hours)

Share challenges and best practices in the work you are doing. Returning Bonners will lead discussions on key program management areas. We will also talk about how you can make the most of the LSJ Conference.

Sat. October 16, 8:30-5pm Leadership and Social Justice Conference (T: 6 hours) Attend workshops with other Bay Area college students to learn about social issues and

develop leadership skills. Social issue workshops will focus on Poverty/Homelessness, Education, and the Environment. Lunch provided.

Oct. 21 Center Wide Trainings: Self-Care Workshop Options (S: 1.5 hrs)

Learn how to sustain yourself for a life-time of service. These workshops will help you balance your life and reconnect with your purpose. Workshops are open to all student leaders.

Tues. Oct. 26, 5:30 – 7pm Youth Programs Networking Session (Optional, S: 1.5)

Meet with other students engaged in youth work around the community. Discuss how you can collaborate with other programs to best serve local youth.

Oct. 28 Center wide Trainings: (T: 1.5 hours) Chose from one of the following workshops open to all student leaders:

Nov. 4 Bonner Thursday - HCP Meeting (S: 1.5 hours)

Meet with your Health Communities Team to check-in about your project, roles and responsibilities, and next steps. Staff will be on call to provide guidance.

Nov. 11 Veteran’s Day Nov. 18 Bonner Thursday (T: 1.5 hours) SLT members will lead a discussion on current events, the recent election, or any other

topic that’s come up during your service. Contact SLT if you have a topic suggestion. Nov. 25 No Bonner – Thanks(giving/taking) Dec. 2 Bonner Thursday (S: 1.5 hours) Bonner staff will lead you in a group reflection about the semester.

Fri. Dec. 10 Final Bonner Meeting: Student Leader Celebration Service Accomplishments Due, November Timesheet Due, Bonner Reflection Paper Due, Supervisor Evaluation Due

Spring 2011 January 16 Bonner Mid-Year Retreat – Community Building (T: 7 hours)

The Bonner Mid-Year Retreat addresses the Bonner Common Commitment of Community Building. The retreat brings all Bonner Leaders together before the start of their second semester to prepare for another 13 weeks of service. Students will share personal stories, participate in team building activities, and work on their Big Ideas/Healthy Communities Projects.

M. January 17 MLK Day of Service (S: 6 hours) Bonner Leaders will serve at the YMCA-PG&E Teen Center. Th. January 20 No Bonner Thursday - BSV Team Meeting January 27 Bonner Thursday: Goal Setting and Planning (T: 1.5 hours)

As a group, Bonner Leaders will co-create three Bonner meetings for the semester. Bonners will give input on the training plan, request specific skills trainings, and begin planning.

February 3 Intro to Poverty in Alameda County

This session will be an interactive simulation of the U.S. economic system. Students will understand the pillars of capitalism and how it drives distribution of resources. The activity will be discussed in the context of access to resources for people who are in poverty. This training addresses the Bonner Common Commitment of Social Justice by educating Bonner Leaders about pressing issues related to people who are low-income or homeless. Intro to Education Inequity Students will develop awareness of the different levels of policy related to education and will consider the sometimes competing policy strategies. Students will identify real needs and priorities voiced by teens through dialogue. This training addresses the Bonner Common Commitment of Social Justice by educating Bonner Leaders about pressing issues in education.

February 5 Leadership Symposium (T: 6 hours) February 10 Bonner Thursday: Bonner Best Practices & Bonner Recruitment

Bonner Leaders will meet in cross-program teams to share successes and challenges in their service. They will also discuss best ways to recruit new Bonner Leaders and what skills and experiences are needed for their position.

February 17 Impact of the Economic Downturn On Local Shelters

Students will hear from a local shelter director, Sharon Hawkins Leyden, about how the current economic situation is impacting Youth Engagement Advocacy Housing, a shelter for youth ages 18-25, as well as other shelters in Alameda county. This addresses the Bonner Common Commitment of Social Justice by educating Bonner Leaders about pressing issues related to people who are low-income or homeless. Education Inequity: High School Perspectives Students will develop an awareness of high school student perspectives - their stories, struggles, and aspirations as it pertains to educational inequity in their schools. This addresses the Bonner Common Commitment of Social Justice by educating Bonner Leaders about pressing issues in education.

February 24 Bonner Thursday: Life after Bonner

Bonner Leaders will discuss how to transition out of the Bonner program. Bonners will also share their worries and concerns about post-college life and provide support and resources to one another. Bonners will also have 30 minutes to check in about their Big Ideas/ HCP.

March 3 Poverty in Alameda County: Real World Budget Cuts

This training is a simulation of the Berkeley City Council budget meetings. Students will participate in the process of balancing the City of Berkeley budget and decide which programs to cut. Students will learn the arguments provided for cutting programs that served people who were low-income or homeless.

Educational Policy Panel Students will develop an awareness of state and national approaches for addressing educational inequity, including current and future policy implementation. Bonner Common Commitment of Social Justice by educating Bonner Leaders about pressing issues in education.

March 10 Bonner Thursday : Bonner Alumni Panel This training will reveal the different paths that Bonner Leaders have taken in their

careers. Bonner alumni will share how their Bonner experiences have impacted their career choices and help them in the work they do. Bonner alumni will represent various sectors including government, non-profits, and business.

March 17 No Meeting– Week Before Spring Break March 23 No Meeting - Spring Break March 31 Poverty in Alameda County: Consequences of Budget Cuts

As a follow up to March 31st, students will discuss the potential impact of the budget cut decisions they made. They will also learn the actual cuts and consequences that occurred during fiscal year 2010-2011.

Formative Years: Elementary and Middle School

Local administrators will share their perspectives on critical learning stages and the difference between elementary and middle school. Bonner Common Commitment of Social Justice by educating Bonner Leaders about pressing issues in education.

April 7 Healthy Community Project Presentations

Bonner Leaders will present on their Big Ideas/Healthy Communities Project. Students will utilize their public speaking skills to showcase the civic engagement work they were engaged in over the year.

April 14 Bonner Thursday: Transition Workshop

Bonner Leaders will learn the essentials to leadership transition and prepare to pass down their roles to new students.

April 21 Poverty in Alameda County: Working with Clients and Residents

This workshop will give an overview of how the budget and policy decisions put in place for people who are homeless impacts a social service worker’s day-to-day work. Students will develop an understanding of the emotional and complexities of serving a population with high levels of needs. They will also learn skills for working with vulnerable populations in a respectful and effective way. Education Inequity Reflection Students will reflect on what they’ve learned during the four-part series. There will be discussion on readings, speakers, and policies and well as how the information shared applies to leadership and service positions.

April 28 Bonner Thursday: Transition Meeting & Community Building

New Bonner Leaders will gather to meet outgoing Bonner Leaders. Students will go over transition materials, program highlights, and get to know one another.

May 5 Bonner Thursday: End of Year Reflection

Bonner Leaders will individually and collectively reflect and celebrate the end of their year of service.
