Welcome and congratulations!

On behalf of the Bond University Student Association, I commend you for submitting a high calibre application and on your subsequent acceptance into the Bond in Africa program. It’s crazy to think that there are only a few short weeks between us and our expedition to Mulanje, Malawi.

BAfrica is an exciting development in terms of student engagement in social justice initiatives at Bond. It’s a unique opportunity for personal growth, friendship formation and practical learning. Ideally, the program will provide Bond students with an opportunity to engage in degree relevant developmental assistance, shed-ding light on prospective careers and international opportunities. I hope your Bond in Africa experience will be one of a kind and will give you a greater appreciation of the power of your education. Importantly, I hope this Blueprint gives you and those who care about you some detailed insight into our impending adventure.

As always, please do not hesitate to contact me should you have any questions or concerns.

Here’s hoping that we’ll have a truly wonderful time in sub-Saharan Africa!

Best,

Madeline

Pre-BAfrica ChecklistPre- BAfrica Checklist

PRE-TRAVEL PRECAuTIONS

□ Register with Smart Traveller (each person to do individually) - http://www.smartraveller.gov.au/ (Subscribe for free email updates)

□ Read the country information provided by Smart Traveller

□ Leave copy of the BAfrica Parents and Participants with a close family member

□ Spoken to your GP and taken all recommended medical precautions

□ Check airline restrictions on weight and dimension of checked and hand luggage (hand luggage may be weighed and measured)

□ Check local laws, eg. regarding places that should not be photographed, and whether you are required to carry your passport at all times

□ Finalise insurance

□ Sort out money

□ Advise your bank of use of credit card abroad □ Phone your bank before you leave, and organise foreign currency with your bank, sufficient for personal use □ Cash in the foreign currency is advisable, this can be obtained at the airport or local exchange. A good alternative is the ‘Cash passport’. Get before leaving – it is often not practical to exchange at the destination. We may need: • Cash – Australian (to use on return) • Electronic payment methods (alternative)– ‘eftpos’ or credit card – check that payments can be made abroad, and that you can withdraw cash. Check that you know the pin number. Some countries require both pin and signature

IN-TRANSIT PRECAuTIONS

□ Use bags that close properly (zip-up)

□ Keep copies of important documents in checked and hand luggage in case one set of luggage goes missing. Keep the name and address of the accommodation and contact details in hand luggage as well, in case luggage is delayed, or if you get separated from the group

□ Ensure you have the following travel documentation

□ Passports (scanned copies as well) □ Visas (scanned copies as well) □ Itinerary □ Insurance card (to be obtained from Risk and Audit) – to cover medical emergencies

□ Lock suitcases. Keep two sets of keys separately

□ Note luggage restrictions.

□ Individualise baggage for ease of identification – ie, a red ribbon

□ Pack the following for travel

□ Something to warm to wear with socks □ Reading material

□ NB: Take care with limit on liquids allowed. Passengers travelling on international flights from Australia need to be aware of the quantity limits for liquids, aerosols and gels that can be taken through a security screening point at the airport

□ Liquid, aerosol or gel products must be in containers of 100 millilitres/grams or less □ The containers must be carried in one transparent, resealable plastic bag, like the one in the image below □ The four sides of the bag’s sealed area must add up to no more than 80 centimetres (e.g. 20x20 cm or 15x25 cm) □ The plastic bag must be the type that can be sealed and resealed with a sealing mechanism, like a sandwich bag or freezer bag □ Only one bag is allowed for each passenger, with exceptions for carers who may carry the bag/s of the people in their care, including children □ All containers must fit comfortably into the plastic bag and the bag must be sealed
