Play indoor hopscotch Paddy's Day craft for kidsWith overflowing spirits, pub crawls and boisterous parades, St. Patrick's Day cele-

brations are largely geared toward adults. Although children may experience a little bitof the festivities, they may not be able to participate fully in all of the activities.

One of the easiest ways to engage children for the holiday is to enable them to cre-ate hand-made decorations and games that can be displayed. With a few simple sup-plies, children can create a variety of festive items to share their enthusiasm.

An idea to get them started is to construct a rainbow and pot of gold complete withleprechaun.

To do so gather the following supplies:Poster board; clean, empty gallon milk container; crepe paper in rainbow colors and

in black; gold foil circles; construction paper; glue; scissors; glitter, if desired1. Draw and cut out a leprechaun using various shades of construction paper. Glue

it to the posterboard.2. Cut out half of the milk container to form a "pot." Use glue to adhere black crepe

paper to it. Attach to the posterboard.3. Stick gold foil circles to form the "gold coins" that will be filling the pot of gold.4. Cut out pieces of crepe paper from the rainbow colors and attach to the poster-

board to form the rainbow. Let the pieces end right near the pot of gold.5. Allow kids to embellish further with glitter and any other things they may have

on hand.Display the leprechaun with a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow in a prime spot

during your St. Patrick's Day celebration.

By Donna EricksonHop, skip and jump onto your own

hopscotch game everyone can playindoors using sample carpet squares. It's agreat way to let out energy and get someexercise when the kids are cooped up ona rainy or snowy day. If you live near acarpet store, ask for discarded samplesquares, which are usually free of charge.Choose samples that are approximately10 inches by 12 inches in a variety of fun, playful colors. You'll need at least 10 fora standard game of hopscotch.

When you get home, cut rubber shelfliner into 10-inch squares the size of thecarpet squares. Glue the shelf-liner piecesonto the backsides of the carpet squaresto help keep the squares from slippingand skidding around as the kids jump.

Paint the numbers 1 through 10 on thetops of the squares using acrylic or latexpaints. When dry, grab some flat stonesfor markers, and the kids will be readyand eager to play. Or, while the kids arewaiting for the paint to dry, they canmake their own personalized game mark-ers. Cut out school pictures of each childwho is going to play hopscotch, and gluethe photos onto one side of a flat frozen-orange-juice lid with smooth sides. Whenit's time to play, toss it "face up" onto asquare.

To play, set the squares on the floor ina hopscotch pattern, and hop away! Orinvent your own games and encourageyour kids to practice their numbers whilethey play. Join in with the kids and enjoyone of the oldest and simplest children'sgames around. Like playing jacks, youmight quickly remember that you wereeither good at it and loved to play ... ornot!

When the game is over, pick up thesquares of this portable hopscotch andstack them neatly in a cupboard or closetuntil another indoor play day.

Alternative idea: Instead of a portablehopscotch, tape the squares together on

the backside in the formation you chooseusing duct tape.

Try these tipsStudies have shown that you spend

more and make worse decisions whengrocery shopping at peak hours. To be asaver on the family food bill, pick a timeto shop when you're not rushed, have alist, know the sales ahead of time and eatbefore you go.

• Store an apple or two with your pota-toes to keep them from sprouting. Be sureto check them often.

Cut cotton pads in half to double yoursupply. They typically are big enough fortwo uses, and you can always use twohalves if you need a whole.

Make a creme lipstick last longer andstay cleaner by using a makeup brush toapply it. Your skin picks up more of thelipstick than necessary, one reason whywe blot our lips afterward. But the brushuses only what you need. And there's lessbacteria transfer.

Learn howto make afresh startBy David Uffington

Virtually no one has made itunscathed through our years-long finan-cial meltdown. Whether you're still strug-gling mightily or you've begun to see thelight at the end of the tunnel, chances areone of your questions is: What do I donext?

A new book likely has answers foryou: "The Wall Street Journal Guide toStarting Fresh: How to Leave FinancialHardships Behind and Take Control ofYour Financial Life" by KarenBlumenthal (Crown Business, $15).

"Starting Fresh" is a must-have. It setsits sights on those who've lost jobs orhomes, or suffered from the effects of ahealth crisis, death of a spouse, divorceand more. No matter where you are inlife and no matter your income level, you'll find steps on how to adapt andadjust to your new circumstances.

Blumenthal sets the tone for dealingwith your current reality on the very firstpage: "Decide that you won't make anybig financial decisions right away ...you'll make better choices if you stepback, reflect, assess and get your bear-ings."

One of the very first slow-start stepsshe'll have you do is to take an inventoryof all your assets and liabilities. Forexample, what is your car worth and howmuch do you still owe on it? What, exactly, do you owe on credit cards?Medical bills? Are there any valuables ina safe deposit box? Do any of your insur-ance policies have a cash value?

Next you'll learn how to: •Repair your credit.•Determine whether your housing is

actually affordable. (Should you move orstay?) If you own your home, what is itworth? (Check Zillow.com online.) Doyou qualify for a modification program?

•Adjust your debts to your new situa-tion.

•Assess your health-coverage plans.•Develop a sustainable plan for long-

term financial health.•Readjust your budget to your current

reality. And if there's a miracle and you come

into a large sum of money - perhaps froman insurance policy, employment sever-ance payout or divorce settlement -Blumenthal will tell you how to managethat as well.

Don't miss the section on Internetlinks covering a wide variety of help top-ics.

Minerals may promote a good night's sleep Home tax breaksHomeowners often look to make improvements

to their homes to improve aesthetics, save moneyor make their homes more energy efficient. Whatthey may not know is that certain home improve-ments may qualify them for manufacturer or energysupplier rebates and even federal tax credits thatcan help a person save even more.

Not all products are eligible each year, so it'sbeneficial to know what tax incentives are out thereregarding home retrofits. Here are some programsto keep in mind.

U.S. residents who made home improvements in2011 may be eligible for tax credits when filing a2011 tax return. Installation and replacement ofbiomass stoves, HVAC systems, insulation, metaland asphalt roofs, nonsolar water heaters and win-dows/doors can earn a person up to 10 percent ofthe cost, up to $500, or a specific amount from $50to $300. Improvements must have been done to anexisting home and principal residence byDecember 31, 2011.

Federal tax credits for 2012 include geothermalheat pumps. These are similar to ordinary heatpumps, but use the ground instead of outside air toprovide heating, air conditioning and, in mostcases, hot water. Use of small residential wind tur-bines and solar energy systems, including solarwater heaters and photovoltaic panels, are also eli-gible. These tax credits offer 30 percent of the costof the renovation with no upper limit.

Visit http://Energy.gov/savings to determine anyadditional rebate and savings programs that may beoffered in your state. Canadian residents can logonto http://oee.nrcan.gc.ca/corporate/1513 to findout about other grants and incentives in theirprovince or territory.

Homeowners looking to do improvements cango online or consult with a tax professional todetermine which improvements may be eligible fortax credits or incentives. With the energy saved andthe credit, it could add up to considerable savingson the new product.

It's 3 a.m. and you're staring at the ceiling unable to fallasleep. Or, you've drifted off restfully only to awaken andnot be able to fall back asleep. If these scenarios soundfamiliar, you could be experiencing insomnia. Millions ofpeople suffer from insomnia and wonder if there is anytreatment available.

Statistics by the National Sleep Foundation and BetterSleep Council indicate that anywhere from 30 to 50 percentof people experience some degree of insomnia during theirlifetime. Women are more likely than men to have bouts ofinsomnia. Age, genetics as well mental health play a largerole in the risk factors for insomnia. It is estimated that 90percent of people who are depressed suffer from insomnia.

Those experiencing bouts of insomnia lasting more thana few days may grow anxious and concerned about the situ-ation - further compounding the problem. Visits with gener-al practitioners may yield a prescription for sleeping pillsfor the short term. While effective, sleeping pills are nottypically a long-term solution and can become physically ormentally addictive. Global sales for all sleeping pills, calledhypnotics, will top $5 billion in the next several years, according to pharmaceutical estimates. You may want toconsider other methods for improving sleep quality.

Most people experiencing sleep disturbances understandthe benefits of employing good sleep hygiene. Thisincludes going to sleep at the same time each night andwaking at the same time. Alcohol and caffeinated beverageconsumption should be stopped several hours before bedtime. Exercise and some exposure to the sun can reset asleep-wake cycle. For those who need a little more help, theuse of vitamins and minerals may be all that's needed.Several research studies have shown certain minerals cabbe effective at inducing sleep and helping people fall asleepand stay asleep through the night.

Research indicates that taking the supplements magne-sium and calcium can do more than just support strongbones. According to James F. Balch, M.D., author of"Prescription for Nutritional Healing," "A lack of the nutri-ents calcium and magnesium will cause you to wake upafter a few hours and not be able to return to sleep." Lackof these nutrients also may prevent fast onset of sleep.Calcium and magnesium have both been referred to as nat-ural sedatives. Calcium works best when it's balanced in a

2-to-1 ratio with magnesium. That means for every 200 mgof calcium taken, 100 mg of magnesium should be taken aswell.

But not all forms of magnesium work best. It has beenfound that magnesium chloride has the highest absorptionrate of many different kinds. Calcium lactate gluconate isalso popular for its quick dissolution in water.

In a study called, "The Role of Magnesium in Sleep,"magnesium was determined to be a possible method ofcombating insomnia. Researchers found that sleep wasinduced rapidly and was uninterrupted. Test subjects didn'treport any residual tiredness the next day, as is commonwith other sleeping pills. Also, the calming effects of thecalcium caused anxiety and tension to be diminished duringthe day.

"Calcium helps the brain use the amino acid tryptophanto manufacture the sleep-inducing substance melatonin,"says William Sears, M.D. "This explains why dairy prod-ucts, which contain both tryptophan and calcium, are one ofthe top sleep-inducing foods."

While it's best to get nutritional content from foods, sup-plementation can be helpful if deficient in certain vitaminsand minerals. Before adding any supplements to your diet,it is best to discuss your intentions with your doctor. He orshe can determine if this course of treatment is safe orrisky.

Blind man develops BrailleBlinded as a toddler, Frenchman Louis Braille would go

on to change the world, overcoming his disability and mak-ing it easier for millions of others to do the same. Thoughnot initially blind in both eyes after an accident in hisfather's workshop at the age of three, the infection thatresulted eventually spread to his other eye, blinding youngLouis in both eyes before his fifth birthday. In 1821, at theripe old age of 12, Braille learned a complex communica-tion system devised by the French Army. Though the sys-tem was difficult, Braille was inspired to develop his ownsystem for reading and writing. Within three years, Braille'ssystem of six raised dots was largely complete. Sadly, hissystem was not officially adopted until two years after hisdeath.

Osteoarthritis affects millions of aging men and womenWhile there are many benefits to getting older, few

people associate the aging process with all the good thingsthat occur as a person approaches their golden years.Instead, aging is more often associated with aches andpains than grandkids and trips around the world.

Though such associations are unfortunate, they arerooted in the reality that aging often comes with a few ail-ments. One such ailment many older adults deal with isosteoarthritis, which, according to the Centers for DiseaseControl and Prevention, affects more than 12 million menand women over the age of 65 in the United States alone. In Canada, one in 10 adults has osteoarthritis, proving thismost common form of arthritis does not discriminatebased on geography.

But as prevalent as osteoarthritis might be, the millionsof men and women currently living with the condition areproof that it doesn't have to ruin a person's golden years. In fact, learning about osteoarthritis, its risk factors andprospective treatment options can help those men andwomen currently living with the condition or those con-cerned about developing it down the road.

What is osteoarthritis? Osteoarthritis, or OA, is alsoreferred to as degenerative joint disease. The most com-mon type of arthritis, OA occurs when cartilage begins towear away. Cartilage is an essential part of each joint, helping to absorb shock and enabling the joint to movesmoothly. OA most often occurs in the body's weight-bearing joints, which includes the hips, knees and spine.

When a person has OA, the cartilage in a joint stiffensand loses it elasticity, which makes it more susceptible todamage. Joints will be stiff in the morning, a stiffness thatcan last roughly 15 to 20 minutes. As the day progressesand the joints are used more and more, the pain can inten-sify and swelling can occur. This is typically because, asthe joint's cartilage continues to deteriorate, the tendonsand ligaments are stretching and causing pain.

Are there symptoms of OA?There are symptoms ofOA, but these can vary greatly from individual to individ-ual. Some people experience few symptoms of OA even ifX-rays indicate their joints have undergone significantdegeneration. In addition, the pain associated with OAisn't necessarily constant, and some people can go yearswithout experiencing any OA-related pain. Such instancesare most common among people with OA of the handsand knees.

Those who do exhibit symptoms of OA can do so in avariety of ways. Men and women with progressive carti-lage degeneration in their knee joints might become bowlegged or develop a limp, which will worsen as the carti-lage continues to degenerate.

OA of the spine often causes pain in the neck or lowerback. Severe pain can be caused by bony spurs that formalong the spine, and numbness and tingling of affectedbody parts can result as well.

Men and women with OA of the hands can also exhibitsymptoms, which are usually bony deformities along the

joints of the fingers. Heberden's node is a bony enlarge-ment at the small joint of the fingers that occurs becauseof bone spurs resulting from OA in that joint. A bonyknob that occurs at the middle joint of the fingers, knownas Bouchard's node, is also quite common among men andwomen with OA of the hands. While neither of thesenodes is especially painful, they are associated with limit-ed motion of the affected joint.

Patients with OA at the base of the big toes mightnotice the formation of a bunion, something thatresearchers suggest is possibly genetic, as it can be foundin numerous female members of certain families.

The Arthritis Society in Nova Scotia notes that, earlyon, men and women with OA will find their symptoms aretypically only triggered by high impact activities. However, eventually the pain can be triggered by dailyactivities and might not subside until men and women getadequate rest. Some people even feel pain for most of theday, including when they are attempting to fall asleep atnight.

Can OA be treated? OA can be treated, but men andwomen must recognize that it cannot be cured. As men-tioned above, some people's symptoms can disappear foryears at a time. But they will return, and treatment, if itwas ceased, must then continue.

OA is most common among people who are over-weight, so one of the most effective ways to reduce pain

OsteoarthritisContinued from P.5from OA is to lose weight and get regularexercise. This takes pressure off of jointsthat are being heavily taxed. To loseweight, choose a low-fat diet that featuresplenty of vegetables, fruits, lean proteinsand whole-grains. For a more specific diet, consult a physician.

Though exercising when pain from OAis significant might seem counterintuitive, exercise is actually great for the joints. Each person is different, so consult aphysician before beginning a new exerciseregimen. However, don't shy away fromaerobic exercises, including walking, swimming or even riding a bicycle, orstrength-training exercises like weightlift-ing, which makes the muscles stronger andmore capable of supporting the joints. Andas with any exercise routine, don't forget tostretch.

Another treatment option for jointshurting because of OA is the application of

a heating pad or a cold pack. Cold andheat can be applied several times per day.But those nursing an injury should onlyapply cold for the first few days.

Medications are another treatmentoption for OA. Discuss medications, whichcan include over-the-counter anti-inflam-matory pills, such as Advil, Aleve orMotrin, prescription medications, and cor-ticosteroid injections, with a physicianwho can help determine the best course ofaction.

While surgery is not a necessary courseof treatment for the majority of OA suffer-ers, for some it is. Surgical options can bea minimally invasive arthroscopic proce-dure, a joint fusion surgery wherein thejoint is removed and bones are heldtogether with screws, pins or plates, or acomplete or partial joint replacement.Another surgical option is an osteotomy, aprocedure where a section of the bone iscut and removed to improve joint align-ment and stability.

Revamped healthy eating guideFor many years the classic food pyramid has been the method by which many peo-

ple plan their healthy eating goals. Recently the U.S. Department of Agriculture modi-fied the food pyramid, transforming it into a different symbol altogether -- a dinnerplate.

The general basis of the "MyPlate" model generated by the USDA is to give indi-viduals a better understanding of the ratios of food that should fill their plates. Whilethe average guidelines for the total amount of each food group that should be eatenvaries according to age and sex, the overall messages of how much to fill a plate serveas a good indicator for healthier eating.

Taking a small dinner plate, half of the plate should be filled with fruits and vegeta-bles, which a greater emphasis on vegetables. Slightly less than one-fourth of the otherside of the plate should consist of lean protein. The remaining open portion of theplate should be made up of grains - with at least half of those grains whole grains. Acup of low- or nonfat milk should be an accompaniment to the meal for dairy con-sumption.

Most people get their recommended amount of oils through many of the foods thatthey eat, including fish and nuts. The USDA advises anywhere from 3 to 7 teaspoonsof total oil consumption daily, depending on age and sex. Otherwise, caloric need issurpassed and weight gain may occur.

In addition to the recommendations on food groups and portion sizes, the MyPlateprogram has a series of customizable online information on everything from learningabout calorie intake to personalized eating plans to physical activity trackers, all freeof charge at ChooseMyPlate.gov.

Strange, but trueBy Samantha Weaver

•It was American author JamesThurber who made the following sageobservation: "Humor is emotional chaosremembered in tranquility."

•If you're a fan of the original "Wizardof Oz" movie, you might be surprised tolearn that the actress who played Glindathe Good Witch, Billie Burke, was 54years old when the film was shot.

•The award for the most needless warin history could very well go to Paraguay, whose president, Francisco Solano Lopez, believed himself to be an excellent tacti-cian. He was a great admirer of NapoleonBonaparte and wished to emulate theFrench emperor, but he had no wars tofight. To remedy the situation, in 1864Lopez declared war on all three of hisneighboring countries, Uruguay,Argentina and Brazil. His tactical abilitiesseem to have been of little use, however;it is estimated that 90 percent ofParaguay's male population was killedduring the course of the war.

•During this time of election madness,"misology" could be a useful word toknow. It means "hatred of reason."

•The area that is now the state ofCalifornia had a population of about 700in 1854. In 2010, the population hadincreased to 37,253,956. In the span ofjust over one and a half centuries, thepopulation increased a whopping 53,000times.

•French novelist Marcel Proust's mag-num opus, "Remembrance of ThingsPast," has been hailed as a literary master-piece, but not everyone was a fan at firstread. As Proust was trying, unsuccessful-ly, to find a publisher for his seven-vol-ume work, one publisher said, "I may bedense, but I fail to see why a chap needs30 pages to describe how he tosses andturns in bed before falling asleep." Theauthor finally published the first volumewith his own money; after the book washailed as a masterpiece by critics, thesame publishers who had rejected Proust

competed for the opportunity to print theother six volumes of his work.

It’s a date trufflesBy Angela Shelf Medearis

Recently, my hubby and I celebratedour 37th wedding anniversary. We com-memorate our anniversaries and holidays, like Valentine's Day, a little differentlythan we did when we were younger. Iadore chocolate, but he knows that buy-ing me a large, heart-shaped box ofcaramel or nut-filled confections is badfor my waistline. I don't believe in shar-ing chocolate, and I'll eat them until noth-ing is left but the frilly wrappers.

My husband has diabetes, so the fabu-lous Lemon Chess Pie that I used to bakefor him as a gift for special holidays isnow reserved for when we have guests toshare it with. I've learned how to createspecial treats for him that contain a lotless sugar, but still satisfy his sweet tooth. My recipe for It's a Date Truffles is deli-cious, and because fresh California datesare the basis of the recipe, there are won-derful health benefits packed in my giftthat will keep his heart healthy, too.

A diet low in saturated fat and choles-terol may reduce the risk of heart disease, and dates are free of saturated fat, transfat, sodium and cholesterol. CaliforniaDates are usually of the Deglet Noor andMedjool varieties and are certified by theAmerican Heart Association.

Diets high in fruits are believed toplay an important health-benefit role dueto the antioxidant properties of fruits suchas dates. Dates are rich in polyphenols, aplant antioxidant that has a higher capaci-ty of reducing oxidative stress.Polyphenols destroy free radicals that cancause disease. These compounds arefound only in plants.

A low-fat diet rich in fiber-containinggrain products, vegetables and fruits likedates may reduce the risk of some typesof cancer. Dates are nutrient dense indietary fiber, potassium and manganese. They have a natural balance of manyminerals such as calcium, magnesium,

zinc, copper, iron and selenium. All of theseminerals work in harmony to help lowerblood pressure on a daily basis.

Dates have a wholesome, caramel-likesavory taste and are packed with all-natu-ral sugar. My recipe for It's a DateTruffles! doesn't require any baking. These easy-to-make treats start with drieddates for a natural sweetness and a chewytexture. Cocoa, reduced-fat peanut butterand ground whole-wheat graham crackerstransform the sweet dates into a low-sugar dessert. This is the perfectValentine's Day gift for a diabetic or any-one who wants a healthy treat.

It’s a Date Truffles1 cup dried pitted dates, 4-ounces,

chopped1 cup water1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice2 tablespoons honey or agave syrup 2 tablespoons reduced-fat or no-stir

natural chunky peanut butter2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa

powder1 tablespoon unsalted butter1 teaspoon vanilla extract1/4 teaspoon kosher salt8 full sheets whole wheat graham

King Cake: Leader of the pastriesThere are many traditions associated

with Mardi Gras, but none of them are astasty and delicious as the King Cake. Thecake dates back to ancient times and takesits name from the biblical kings who trav-eled to see the baby Jesus. The season lastsfrom the feast of the Epiphany on January6 until the beginning of the Lenten season, marked by Mardi Gras. Like any tradition, there is definitely more to the cake thanjust the way it tastes.

In several countries like France,Belgium, Switzerland and Greece, theKing Cake is actually associated with thefestival of the Epiphany during theChristmas season. In the United States, it'sclosely associated with Mardi Gras tradi-tions. King Cakes are particularly popularin the southern United States from Floridato Texas, and each region has its uniquestyle. Regardless of their size, the cakesare usually divided up equally among thenumber of people present, plus one. Thatshare is often called the "poor person'sshare" and is intended for the first personin need that shows up at the door.

The secret to the King Cake is that ithas a small trinket inside, often a crown ora small plastic baby. In many culturesaround the globe, a bean is used. Forsome, this represents finding the BabyJesus, but for others, the effect is morepractical. The traditions vary, but usuallythe person who gets the small trinket intheir piece has to buy the King Cake forthe next year or host the next year's MardiGras party. Originally, the trinkets wereceramic, but today they are almost entirelyplastic for a very practical reason. Theyare much less likely to break!

In the most traditional style, the KingCake is more like a ring of twisted bread, which is similar to that used in briochebread. Marked by high concentrations ofeggs and butter, the traditional recipe goeshand in hand with the luxury and culinaryexcesses usually associated with MardiGras. To add to the decadence, the cake istopped with a layer of icing of the tradi-

tional Mardi Gras colors-purple, green andgold.

There are many different styles of KingCakes and many ways to prepare them. Some are deep fried as doughnuts wouldbe. People have begun to make their ownvariations and the new southern cuisinehas had a hand in making some recentchanges. Some have fillings like creamcheese or strawberry.

Mardi Gras safety tipsMardi Gras can be a great time, but it's

important to take some safety precautionswhile you celebrate. Many different kindsof celebrations can take place, so there's noone right way to prepare. By taking intoaccount the possible risks and the optionsyou'll have wherever you may be, you canbe more prepared.

Make sure you have a phone in caseyou get lost. At large street parties likethose in New Orleans and other majorcities, it is easy to lose your way or yourfriends and family. Set up a place whereyou can meet at a designated time in caseyou get separated. If you are planning ondrinking past the point where you cansafely operate a motor vehicle, make plansfor your safe return home or wherever youare staying. Put the number of a couple ofdifferent taxi cab companies into yourphone. You can also plan out a route withpublic transportation.

Traveling to family parties is a com-pletely different affair, but you will stillwant to take some care. Large crowds canbe scary for young children, and it is pos-sible to lose them in a crowd. If you aregoing to be traveling with your child, besure to brief them on ways to stay safe.Traveling with a small first aid kit is agood idea.

Mardi Gras can be a time filled withmirth and hilarity, but a small injury orloss of contact with friends or family cansignificantly mar that time out. Take theprecautions necessary to have a good time.
