I Men’s Final Four Cup underway at Monterrey

MONTERREY, México, November 6, 2013. – Canada and Mexico opened with victories at the I

Men’s Final Four Cup on Wednesday at Nuevo Leon Unido Gym in Monterrey.

Canada beat Venezuela in straight sets 25-20 25-22, 25-18 while Mexico did their part

prevailing over Dominican Republic by 3-1 (25-18, 25-17, 21-25, 25-14).

“We were nervous in the beginning, for me this is my first international match with our

national team; I tried to do my best and always keeping in mind that with more preparation

and practice we’ll do better. Venezuela has tall players who made things difficult for us” said

captain Justin Boudreault.

“I am satisfied with the victory, we always play good matches against Dominican Republic

which makes a great spectacle” indicated captain Tomas Aguilera. “Our blocking improved in

the fourth set, combined with our serving. I am glad to be in Monterrey and hope to see more

fans during the next days” he finished.

Coach Jorge Azair explained that the four teams here are trying different players and

combinations making the match change its rhythm “in our case, we’re trying Tomas in the

position left by Ivan and I’m glad how he responded, this will improve our blocking in this

position. We were determined to be stronger in the fourth, improving our service and

Voth led Canada with 12 points followed by Steve Gotch with 10. For Venezuela, Luis Arias

finished with 9 points while Daniel Escobar and Hector Salerno chipped in with 8 points apiece.

Mexico had a good start at the I Men’s Final Four Cup defeating Dominican Republic 3-1 (25-

18, 25-17, 21-25, 25-14). The home team began strong winning the first two sets while

Dominicans had a comeback in the third edging the locals to start the fourth and final set with

different tactics which turned out in their favor. Mexico showed superiority in the blocking


category with 15-4 advantage. Samuel Cordova along with Tomas Aguilera were Mexico’s top

scorers with 13 points apiece, both with 6 and 5 points respectively by aces. Henry Tapia also

with 13 points led Dominican Republic, followed by Luis Adames who scored 12 points.

I Copa Varonil Final Four arrancó en Monterrey

MONTERREY, México, 6 de noviembre de 2013.- Canadá y México abrieron con victorias la I

Copa Varonil Final Four este miércoles en el Gimnasio de Nuevo León Unido de Monterrey.

Canadá venció a Venezuela en sets seguidos 25-20 25-22, 25-18 en tanto que México hizo su

parte imponiéndose sobre República Dominicana por 3-1 (25-18, 25-17, 21-25, 25-14).

“Estábamos nerviosos al principio, para mi este es mi primer juego internacional con la

selección; intenté dar lo mejor teniendo siempre en mente que con más preparación y

práctica, lo haremos mejor. Venezuela tiene jugadores altos que nos hicieron las cosas

difíciles” dijo el capitán Justin Boudreault.

“Estoy satisfecho con la victoria, siempre tenemos buenos juegos con República Dominicana lo

que hace un gran espectáculo” indicó el capitán Tomás Aguilera. “Nuestro bloqueo mejoró en

el cuarto set, combinado con el servicio. Estoy contento de estar en Monterrey y espero que

más público venga los próximos días” finalizó.

El entrenador Jorge Azair explicó que los cuatro equipos acá están probando diferentes

jugadores y combinaciones haciendo que el ritmo de juego varíe “en nuestro caso, estamos

probando a Tomás en la posición que dejó Ivan y estoy contento de cómo respondió, esto

mejorará nuestro bloqueo en esa posición. Entramos más decididos en el cuarto, mejorando el

servicio y el bloqueo, provocando que nuestro rival perdiera confianza.”

nuestros arreglos de viaje tampoco fueron buenos. Sabíamos que los venezolanos juegan con

sets mientras que los dominicanos respondieron en el tercero presionando a los locales a que

en el cuarto y último set utilizaran una táctica distinta que les favoreció. México demostró

superioridad en la categoría de bloqueo con ventaja de 15-4. Samuel Córdova junto a Tomás

Aguilera fueron los máximos anotadores para México con 13 puntos cada uno, ambos con 6 y

5 puntos respectivamente por puntos de servicio. Henry Tapia también con 13 puntos lideró a

República Dominicana, seguido por Luis Adames que anotó 12 puntos.
