    Executive Summary

Memorial Stadium is over 20 years old and is in need of either renovations or acomplete overhaul. The stadium is located in Meridian, Idaho and is the current stadiumfor the Boise Hawks. The land the stadium was build on is also shared by the TreasureValley fairground. The goal of this research is to look into whether or not there is local

support for building a new stadium. The research also considered key questionsregarding the potential benefits if the team were upgraded to a Triple A minor leagueteam. The research was also used to find out about other possibilities that would beinfluenced by a new facility such as location of the stadium, uses of the stadium for otherevents, amenities that people would like in a new stadium, and their willingness to payfor events among other questions.

Research was conducted using stratified random sampling. This samplingprocedure was chosen to minimize errors and to maximize the validity by surveyingpeople that would be proportionately accurate to the overall population of TreasureValley. The survey was distributed by Qualtrics, an online market research companythat distributes surveys to specific types of people that are outlined by the needs of the

    survey.

The analysis showed that the attitude for having a new stadium, building a newstadium, and whether it is time to build a new stadium all had the average answer offavorable, which is a five on the seven point likely scale that was used. This displaysthat the overall support for a new stadium is favorable. Multiple locations were given inTreasure Valley and Meridian and Downtown Boise were the most preferred. There wasa correlation between preferring Meridian and having higher support.

There was a very large interest in being able to watch concerts at a new stadium. The second most desired event was being able to watch the Boise Hawks. Otheramenities that were preferred by respondents were a meeting room, convention center

and a restaurant while their least favorite of the choices were a bar and a hotel.

People who supported single A were willing to pay on average $10-15 for a ticketwhile people that supported a Triple A team were willing to pay $15-20 for a ticket. Itwas also indicated that people prefer the Triple A season over the Single A season.

So in conclusion, there is support for a new stadium in Boise and the mostpreferred location is in Meridian. There is a higher demand to watch a Triple A teamwhich leads to a higher willingness to pay for that team. If the new stadium isconstructed it should be made so that concerts can be comfortably watched as it is inhigh demand. Other events that should be held include Boise Hawks baseball and highschool sports. Amenities that people would like are a restaurant and group facilities

including a conference room and meeting center.

    Introduction

Memorial Stadium is the current stadium of the Boise Hawks. It was built in 1989and cost two million dollars. At the time, the stadium was constructed with usedmaterials and old appliances. The current Hawks stadium was built in only 135 days bythe Wright Brothers. This stadium still plays host to several events and sporting activities

in the area. These events include; holding 2-3 corporate events annually, high schoolfootball and what used to be world tennis teams, and concerts. Sadly though, there areno more world tennis teams or big concerts that are held in the stadium. The Hawksstadium is also used as a fairground, which unfortunately means that the team has toleave for 12 days each year when the fair is in town and these days are very hard on theteam.

The facility has experienced some problems. As stated before, several of theworking parts in the stadium were used and are now needing upgrades and remodeling. The cooling system used was build 1979, therefore when the stadium began operationthe system was already 10 years old. After 30 years of use, it needs to be replacedalong with many other systems in the stadium which wont run for much longer. The

Chicago Cubs has an affiliation with the Boise Hawks and uses them for filter players. They say that they need a better place to play if they want to renew their contract ofaffiliation with the Cubs. While this is not a for sure way to renew their contract if thestadium is built the Cubs requested a better stadium, especially a nicer clubhouse.

Boise Hawks are one of the few Single A teams that made a profit in 2008. Therevenues of 2008 were $1.63 million. There were over 120 million tickets that were soldto Boise Hawks fans in 2008. The expenses in this year were $1.45 million. Almost allthe profit was used to improve the stadium but these improvements were not enough.Boise Idaho is the second biggest city in the Northwest league and for this reasonamong others it is time to consider the switch to a Triple A minor league baseball team.

There is an opportunity to consider: a new multi-purpose facility will mean moreevents can be held including but not limited to; company events, wedding receptions, graduation ceremonies, festivals, high school sports, as well as concerts and exhibitions. There are many possibilities for a downtown multi-purpose facility especially the boomfor downtown businesses. It has been proven by the construction of other stadiums andfacilities in the United States that the benefits of the new facility outweigh the costs.Having a Triple A team may revitalize baseball in Boise and continue to bring in morerevenue as well as create new fans. This is all in hopes that a new stadium will boostthe local business economy.

The economics of Boise area has impact on the decision of building a newstadium or not. The current tax revenue to city of Boise is $0. If the Boise Hawks stay as

a single A baseball team, the estimated annual sales tax revenue from a DowntownMulti-Use Facility is $500,000. If the team were to switch to a Triple A minor leagueteam, the tax revenues would be estimated to increase to $1.5 million. If the Multi-UseFacility is agreed upon, there will be 150 construction jobs available. In these tougheconomic times, increased job opportunities could mean a lot to the locals. The facilitywill cost the city of Boise $16 million or $10 million conservatively. The estimated cost ofon-going payroll operations is $2.25 million which will continue to give back to the

community and provide jobs. There will be an estimated 238,000 visitors every year tothis new downtown facility.

    Purpose

Overall the intentions are to measure the support for a new multi-purpose sportsand entertainment facility in the Treasure Valley. Once defined if there is a want for anew baseball complex, one must identify what price residents are willing to pay for aticket to a Hawks game. Then it must be defined which location for the new ball park isdesired. The final intention is to discover if there would be a larger draw to the games ifBoise moves from Single A to Triple A baseball. Its vital to interpret whether theTreasure Valley population can support a Triple A long season (80 games).

    Sampling Technique

The sampling strategy chosen is stratified random sampling. This approach is

implemented by breaking up the population into meaningful groups and then samplewithin each strata. Strata divide the sample in to unified groups and allow for correlationof important factors of people who are similar. Additionally, the proportionate stratifiedsampling technique was used. This narrow strategy is applied by sampling based on thesize of the populations so that the sample data represents the population moreaccurately.

The sampling procedure for this study is used to minimize errors and to maximizethe validity which also decreases the sample selection error. Some of the advantages tostratified random sampling are that the results are more representative of the targetpopulation and the study can compare the different strata for correlations or anomalies. Some of the disadvantages include the need for accurate information about the target

population and the researchers can find it difficult to figure out what to base the strata onwhether it is gender, ethnicity, political party, etc.

The study found the strata to be age and gender of the population of Boise, ID.The gender was used as the base strata and age groups to be the secondary strata. The population information comes from the census of Boise Idaho in 2000. This meansthe advantages are that the census bureau does the most complete demographicscharacteristics study of the entire country, so the information gathered is second tonone. The disadvantages are that the information we are basing our strata on arealmost ten years old. The population could be vastly different now and could over orunder-estimate the power of some subgroups.

The details of the target population include the following dataTotal Pop: 185,787 100% Male: 92,014 49.5% Female: 93,773 50.5%

    Data Collection and Entry

Implementation of this study will happen through an online study by Qualtrics.Qualitrics is a company that creates and distributes surveys online to people who fit theneeds of the survey. They use a closed or by-invitation-only meaning that the peoplewho have access to take the survey are pre-validated individuals, basically meaning theyfit the characteristics needed for the survey. The compensation of each person thatparticipates in the study was about $6.50 per person.

One problem faced is the Qualtrics panel sample is not proportionate to thetarget population of Boise. For example the study has 62% females and 38% males. The population of Boise according to the 2000 census is 50.5% females and 49.5%males. This difference will greatly affect the validity and the compatibility of the study tothe population of Boise.

    Sample Characteristics

To gather results significant the Boise Hawks investors, it was vital to make sure

our survey respondents closely mirrored the current population. The last census that

took place in Boise was conducted in 2000. The 301 respondents that took the survey

closely resembled the census data collected in 2000. For instance the gender and

ethnicity breakdown was nearly identical to that of the 2000 census. The only

discrepancy came in the age column. The respondents from the 2009 survey had a

median age 15.2 years higher than the 2000 census. Reasoning: The age bracket forrespondents 45 years and above was over-sampled and respondents 45 years and

below were under-sampled. Overall, this under-estimated the level of support for the

stadium because as the age increased, the level of support decreased. (See table

    below)

    Data Analysis & Results

    Basic Questions:

What is the Level of Support for a new facility?

This question was answered by using the combination of three similar questionswhich asked: the general attitude toward having a new multi-purpose facility in treasure

valley, the attitude towards building the new facility, and the extent of agreement that it is

time to build the new facility. The scale of the three questions was different for each.

When asking about attitude towards having and building, the scale is from favorable to

unfavorable; but, for the time to build question, the scale is from agree to disagree. Thus,

in order to compare those three questions in one graph, the new scale has been created

to range from positive to negative.

From the graph 'Comparison of Data', it shows that people's choices are mainly

on somewhat positive and positive. That implies the average population is supportive to

    the new stadium.

After computing the correlation of those three questions, the result indicate that

the three questions are correlated. Since the three questions are correlated, the level of

support conclusion is based on the evaluation of the three questions key questions.

The mean of attitude having is 5.2, a little higher than somewhat positive. The

mean of attitude building is 5.26, higher than somewhat positive. Finally, the mean of

time to build is 4.86, which is between neutral and somewhat positive but closer to

somewhat positive. The average of the three means is 5.11; which means that the level

of support to a new stadium is high, at around somewhat positive level.

Where do people want the stadium built?

The question was asked to rank order for the location that they would prefer the

new stadium to be located with one being their favorite or best option and six being theworst or least favorite option. This implies that the choice with the lowest mean is the

most preferred location. In the data above, the conclusion is that Meridian is the most

desired place, since it has the lowest mean, 2.19. The following preferred locations are

Downtown Boise and Eagle. Note: Meridian is the location where the current stadium is

    located.

What types of amenities do people want in the stadium?

The main amenity the survey-takers agree they want is the restaurant. The

meeting room, convention center, and banquet facilities followed as desired amenities

and the least favorite options were hotel and bar. The restaurant is a must and it is

recommended that there are multiple restaurants in the new stadium. The meeting,

convention center and banquet facility are all also recommended for the new facility and

can probably be incorporated in one area under the title of group facilities. The bar and

hotel accommodations are not recommended to be a part of the new stadium due to lack

of support from the survey-takers. All the data points have been checked for significance

and all prove, to varying degrees, to be significant.

neutral, but the support doesnt add up compared to the other facilities.

What types of activities would people likely attend the new stadium?

The main type of activity the survey-takers agree they want is concerts. The

Boise Hawks, HS Football, USL Soccer, HS Soccer, BSU Soccer and HS Soccer are

ordered from the most supported to the least supported respectively. Concerts are by far

chosen as an activity people would most like to see. The second most likely of the

proposed events is the Boise Hawks Baseball team. All the others are below average

below unsure, so most people would not go out of their way to attend HS, BSU or USL

events. All the data points have been checked for significance and all prove, to varying

How popular are the Boise Hawks (compared to other local sports teams)?

In order to determine the popularity of the Boise Hawks in relation to other localsports teams, two questions were asked. It was expected that the Boise State Broncos

football program would rank highest in popularity. However, its important to understand

how the Boise Hawks popularity ranks in relation to the Broncos Football program other

local teams. Respondents were first asked if they are a fan of the local sports teams.

The questions were given on a four point scale: 1.) Not a Fan 2.) Casual Fan 3.) Fan 4.)

Avid Fan. The results identified that as suspected the Boise Broncos Football program

  • 8/8/2019 Boise Hawks Stadium Final Report

had the largest number of Fans. On average people in Boise are Fans of the Broncos.

The Boise Hawks had the third highest mean and seems to be viewed similarly to the

Boise Steelheads Hockey team. On average people are Casual Fans of the Boise

    Hawks.

They were then asked to indicate their attitude toward the following sports teams:

Boise Hawks Baseball, Boise State Broncos Football/Basketball, Idaho Stampede. The

question was asked on a seven point scale: 1.) Very Unfavorable 2.) Unfavorable 3.)

Somewhat Uavorable 4.) Neither (scale midpoint) 5.) Somewhat Favorable 6.)

Favorable 7.) Very Favorable. Once again the Boise Broncos Football program was the

benchmark with an average mean of 5.80 meaning that on average residents have a

Favorable attitude toward their football program. The Boise Hawks recorded the

second highest mean with an average score of 5.09. It can be concluded that in general

residents have a Somewhat Favorable attitude towards the Boise Hawks Baseball

    program.

Is willingness to pay higher for triple A or single A?

The people were asked to rank how likely they would be to purchase a ticket withdifferent price options between $10- $25 since these were the common prices for eachleague. Respondents were asked to rate their likeliness to pay at each price for a singleA game and once at each price for a Triple A game. The scale they were using toassess the likeliness was a seven point scale being: 1.) Very Unlikely, 2.) Unlikely,3.) Somewhat Unlikely, 4.) Undecided, 5.) Somewhat Likely, 6.) Likely, 7.) season with 56% of the respondents choosing 5, 6, or 7 for their answer to this survey

question. 38% were undecided meaning they chose a 4 as their answer, which leaves

only 6% choosing 3, 2, or 1 meaning they prefer a Single A season. This information is

How much money do people have to spend on entertainment (disposable incomeand actual expenditures per week)?

The exact questions that were asked were How much does your family spend

per week on entertainment (including eating out)?and What is your disposable monthly

income (i.e., money available after you have paid fixed expenses, such as food, clothing,

    housing, utilities etc.)?

All but seven of those results fit into six price range categories. Results for

weekly entertainment expenses are listed below. There were 276 respondents for the

weekly entertainment question who answered with an average of $81.25; almost 65%

entered that they had one hundred dollars or less. The data in these two questions had

some outliers that were more extreme which created a higher average, so looking at the

medians in this case are helpful. The median for weekly entertainment came to about

$50. There were 251 people that responded to the disposable monthly income question

and results had a mean of $1,819.19, but a median of $500.

    Unique Questions:

Unique Question 1: Is there a correlation between where people want the stadiumand support for the stadium?

To identify a predicator of support for the new stadium, it was important to look at

the answers given about where people want the new stadium. The results indicated thatpeople will support a new stadium in specific areas. The hypothesis was that the mostpopular locations from the common question, measuring the popularity of locations, willhave more support for building the new stadium. So Meridian and Downtown Boiseshould have the greatest correlation with support for the facility.

The data below is interpreted to which locations have the most support for a newfacility. The correlations or relationships between the locations and the support aremeasured on a scale centered on zero. Therefore, the more positive the correlation, themore people will prefer that the stadium not be put in a specific area. And the morenegative the correlation, the more people will prefer that the stadium be put in a specificarea.

There is only one significant correlation in the following data. There is a weakcorrelation involving Garden City (r = 0.146, p < 0.05). The positive sign indicates thatpeople who prefer that the stadium NOT be put in Garden City are somewhat more likelyto support the stadium. The relationship is significant at the five percent level, which isvery high dependability of significance. Therefore, the hypothesis proposed is notcorrect.

Unique Question 2:What is the correlation between ticket buying options and howmany games you would be willing to attend? (We decided to restrict this analysisto Triple A, because we have so few folks who completed the games I wouldattend for Single A.)

This means people who are interested and actually want to go to the BoiseHawks games will prefer season or partial season ticket buying options and will be morewilling to go to more games. This makes sense if they buy more tickets, they will go tomore games.

The data below shows that people who say they prefer season ticket andpartial ticket would attend more games (accordingly, r = -0.462, p < 0.001 and r = -.464, p

The data below shows there is a moderately strong correlation between thesetwo factors (r = 0.497, p < 0.001). From this correlation, the variance explained (r2) canbe found. The variance explained proves that seeing the concerts significantly explains24.7% of the variance in Avg. Support for the facility. This means that nearly a quarter ofall the survey-takers support the stadium because of their interest in seeing concerts.

    Conclusions:

What is the level of support for a new facility?

The survey-takers answered three questions to measure the average support for

building a multi-purpose facility. The three questions that measure support are: attitude

for having, attitude for building and agreement or disagreement with time to build. The

most supported question was measuring attitude for building, so most people believe in

building a new facility. The overall average of 5.1, an average over the scale midpoint

and shows that people support the stadium.

Where do people want the stadium built?

The main conclusion of the proposed building locations of the new stadium

shows that Meridian is the favorite. Meridian is the same suburb that the currentstadium, Memorial Stadium is located. The second location was downtown Boise. One

factor that might have affected their decisions is the missing information of the downtown

Boise revitalization. This information might have changed opinions to or away from the

Boise location. The final conclusion is the stadium should definitely not be located in

Garden City, due to the relationship found between not supporting the facility and the

    stadium being in Garden City.

What features should be included in the new stadium?

The survey-takers answered what amenities or features they would want in a

new multi-purpose facility. The most popular amenity is a restaurant. This means that

people would want a restaurant, not only during the baseball season or during baseball

games, but also for after and before games and during the off-season. The next three

most popular amenities all can be categorized as group facilities; meeting, convention

and banquet facilities. The last two proposed amenities are a hotel and a bar. The bar

could probably be a part of the restaurant, but probably should not be a dedicated bar.

What events would people likely attend in the new stadium?

The main conclusion of the proposed events of the new multi-purpose facility is

that people want to see concerts. 91% of the survey-takers answered that they have

interest in seeing concerts and 84% of the survey-takers answered that they would likely

attend concerts at the new facility. The results also show that seeing concerts explains

24.9% of the variance in support for the stadium, meaning nearly a quarter of the survey-

takers support the stadium because of their interest in seeing concerts. The facility

should also feature the Boise Hawks Baseball and some high school and college sports.

The survey-takers had little interest in viewing USL Soccer at the proposed facility.

How popular are the Boise Hawks (compared to other local sports teams)?

The survey-takers answered to how much they like various sports teams in the

    Boise area. The benchmark sports team is the Boise State Broncos football program;

this local team is a good yardstick for the highest level of popularity. The results showed

that the Stampede Hockey and Hawks baseball teams are second to Boise State

Football. Most people answered on average they were fans for Boise State Football and

casual fans of Stampede and Hawks.

Do people prefer Single-A or Triple-A season?

The main conclusion is that the people prefer a Triple A season to a short Single

A season. The question was set up by: 1, 2 and 3 preferring Single A strong to weak, 4

unsure of season, and 5, 6 and 7 preferring Triple A weak to strongest. The results

showed that 6.97% preferred Single A, 37.54% are unsure and 55.49% prefer Triple A.

    Ticket Buying Options and Costs?

The survey-takers answered how much they would be willing to pay for tickets at

Single A and Triple A. The results showed that people are willing to pay $10 to $15 on

average for Single A games. The results also showed that people are willing to pay $15

to $20 on average for Triple A games. The results also showed that people who want

season ticket and partial season ticket options would be more likely to attend more

games. The results showed that people who want single games and no ticket buying

options would be more likely to attend fewer games.

How much money do people have to spend on entertainment?

The main conclusion is that 65% of respondents have $100 or less to spend on

entertainment every week. The mean is $81.25 for the week, but a few outliers throw the

average. The median amount of money spent for weekly entertainment is $50 and the

median amount that was found the disposable income per month to be $500 among

    households.

    Recommendations:

    1. The people of Boise support a stadium in the Treasure Valley region and overallthey believe it is time to build it.

    2. The facility should be built in Meridian or Downtown Boise. The facility should notbe in Garden City.

    3. The facility should include a restaurant or restaurants for baseball games, as wellas off season and non-game days.

    4. The facility should include group/corporate facilities including meeting rooms, aconvention center and or banquet facilities.

    5. The stadium should hold many concerts throughout the year. This will bring inrevenue and is in high demand for Boise

    6. The stadium should showcase both Boise Hawks games and high schoolsporting events.

    7. The stadium should have USL soccer only after more research has beengathered.

    8. The Boise Hawks should switch to a longer more competitive Triple A league, because the demand is high and willingness to pay for ticket is higher.

**Note: This switch should only happen if the revenue expected (average of 6 gamesattended and $15 to $20 a ticket) can match the extra cost of building a bigger

    stadium.
