A guide to the Scotch whisky regions Like wines, the single malts of Scotland are grouped by region although these
regions offer a guideline rather than a rule. The regions of Scotland are the
Lowlands, the Highlands, Campbeltown and the island of Islay all having their
own origins in the regulation of licences and duties, but they do also embrace
certain characteristics.
The Lowlands This area tends to produce softer malts, without the peat of the Highlands or the
brininess of the coastal malts. The Lowlands is defined by a line following old
county boundaries and running from the Clyde estuary to the River Tay. The
line swings north of Glasgow and Dumbarton and runs to Dundee and Perth.
The Highlands, Islands and Speyside By far the largest region, the Highlands embraces wide variations in style. The
western Highlands have only a few scattered distilleries, and it is difficult to
generalise about their character. If they have anything in common, it is a
rounded, firm, dry character, with some peatiness. The far north of the
Highlands has several whiskies with a notably heathery, spicy, character,
probably deriving both from the local soil and the coastal location of the
distilleries. The more sheltered East Highlands and the Midlands of Scotland
(sometimes described as the South Highlands) have a number of notably fruity
whiskies.
None of these Highland areas is officially regarded as a region, but the area
between them, known as Speyside, is universally acknowledged as the heartland
of malt distillation. This area, between the cities of Inverness and Aberdeen,
sweeps from Granite Mountains down to fertile countryside, where barley is
among the crops. It is the watershed of a system of rivers, the principal among
which is the Spey. Although it is not precisely defined, Speyside is commonly
agreed to extend from the River Findhorn in the west to the Deveron in the east.
Within this region are several other rivers, notably the Livet.
The Speyside single malts are noted in general for their elegance and complexity,
and often a refined smokiness. Beyond that, they have two extremes: the big,
sherryish type, as typified by The The Macallan, Glenfarclas and Aberlour; and
the lighter, more subtle style. Within Speyside, the River Livet is so famous that
its name is borrowed by some whiskies from far beyond its glen.

Only one may call itself The Glenlivet, only Braes of Glenlivet and Tamnavulin
are produced in the valley, and only Tomintoul in the parish. These are all
delicate malts, and it could be more tentatively argued that other valleys have
malts that share certain characteristics. The Highland region includes a good
few coastal and island malts, but one peninsula and just one island have been of
such historical importance in the industry that they are each regarded as being
regions in their own right.
Campbeltown On the peninsula called the Mull of Kintyre, on the west coast of Scotland,
Campbeltown once had about 30 distilleries. Today, it has only two. One of
these, Springbank, produces two different single malts. This is achieved by the
use of a lightly peated malt in one and a smokier kilning in the other. The
Campbeltown single malts are very distinctive, with a briny character. Although
there are only three of them, they are still considered by serious malt lovers to
represent a region in their own right.
Islay Pronounced "eye-luh", this is the greatest of whisky islands: much of it deep with
peat, lashed by the wind, rain and sea in the Inner Hebrides. It is only 25 miles
long, but has no fewer than eight distilleries, although not all are working. Its
single malts are noted for their seaweedy, iodine like, phenolic character. A dash
of Islay malt gives the unmistakable tang of Scotland to many blended whiskies.
Tasting notes We have included a brief tasting note for each of the many single malt whiskies
on our list which we hope will prove useful to both the novice and seasoned
drinkers. By their nature, tasting notes are always subjective and so you may
not agree with what we say! We are indebted to the many different sources who
have provided these notes, not least www.whisky-world.com which provides a
wealth of information for the whisky enthusiast.

666 Aberfeldy 12yrs 40% £12.90
Southern Highlands, distillery bottling
On the nose we find orange zest, incense and a touch of sherry. The palate
is oily, with clean fruitiness and very lively, fresh flavours. The finish is like
biting into a kumquat; then a long, fruity glow.
633 Aberlour 10yrs 40% £11.20
Speyside, distillery bottling
Nutty, with nutmeg and a hint of cinnamon. Although peated it is very
brandy like and warming. Not overly challenging but quite satisfying,
particularly with dessert.
845 Aberlour 16yrs 43% £16.20
Speyside, distillery bottling
Aberlour 16 year old has been double matured in traditional oak and sherry
casks. Intense, honeyed flavoured, complex, with fabulous spicy wood notes
lingering & mouth-watering finish.
846 Aberlour 18yrs 43% £25.10

635 Ardbeg 10yrs 46% £15.60
Islay, distillery bottling
The nose is amazingly smoky with a whiff of tar covered rope. The palate is
robust with more peat smoke and the flavours of turf and Lapsang
Souchong. A long finish with a fragrant peaty reek. Whilst flavour packed,
this is still a delicate Scotch.
651 Ardbeg Uigedail
Islay, distillery bottling 54.2% £17.50
Pronounced 'Oog-a-dal.' A fine drop of Ardbeg bottled at cask strength.
A marriage of Ardbeg from bourbon barrel and sherry butt which gives a
sweet and smoky finish to this malt. Uigeadail is the loch from which all
Ardbeg water flows. This 'huge' dram is, in the best traditions of Ardbeg,
intense.
642 Ardbeg Corryvreckan 57.1% £22.00
Islay, distillery bottling
As a replacement for the much-loved 1990 Airigh nam Beist, Ardbeg
Corryvreckan had some pretty big shoes to fill, but the good news is that
this is a belter, winning World's Best Single Malt Whisky at the World
Whisky Awards 2010 and Best No Age Statement Scotch from Jim Murray's
Whisky Bible.
622 Ardbeg 1990 Airigh Nam Beist 46% £53.00
Islay, distillery bottling
Airigh Nam Beist 1990 is a delicious vintage bottling from the ongoing
success story that is Ardbeg. Sadly now discontinued due to exhausted
stocks, 'the Beist' was an extremely popular Ardbeg, with assertive and
powerful peatiness and a lovely honeyed edge. Oh, and it's pronounced 'Arry
nam Baysht'.
836 Ardbeg Single Cask 49.9% £137.15
Islay, distillery bottling for Verdier in Italy 1 of 246 bottles
Bottled from a single refill for Italy in 2003, over half the cask was returned
to the distillery due to legal issues after the sale of Glenmorangie in 2004.
At the distillery almost all the remaining bottles were used in tastings and
research. This remains, as a result one of the rarest of all Ardbeg bottling.
The whisky itself is quite simply stunning the nose is rich with layers of
dense oily phenols, tropical and green fruits, with an unusual distinctive
medical streak running through it. An amazing Ardbeg and a stunning
drink that totally challenges and beguiles the senses.
660 Ardbeg ‘Lord of the Isles’ 46% £223.00
Islay, distillery bottling
A deep smoky yet balanced aroma with powerful peat and a sweet mouth
feel. The palate is silky with fruitiness, usually reminiscent of lemons, with
a momentary suggestion of cherries. The flavours become almond and
walnut-like, then rooty and peppery. A long dry finish with chocolate malt
and crushed peat.

ml 738 Auchentoshan 12yrs
40% £12.20
Lowlands, distillery bottling
The 12 year old is smooth, fresh and nutty with a golden honey appearance.
It has a Crème Brulee smell with a burst of citrus and the signature
nuttiness and green leafiness of Auchentoshan. To taste the palate is smooth
and sweet with hints of tangerine and lime. To finish, it is a gingery and
slightly drying with a pleasant lingering nuttiness
745 Auchentoshan Three Wood
40% £15.00
Lowlands, distillery bottling
Sweet, butterscotch with prunes and custard. Jaffa cake and apricots with
Christmas cake and roasted almonds. The Three Wood expression is
matured in three different casks – American bourbon wood, Spanish oloroso
sherry then finished in Pedro Ximenez casks.
652 Auchroisk 10yrs 43% £17.10
Speyside, distillery bottling
Light soft and creamy. The nose is reminiscent of American cream soda,
custard and cooked apple, bread and butter pudding with nutty malt
underneath. Very soft and sweet on the palate. Straight down the middle.
A delicious soft finish.
647 Balvenie 12yrs Single Barrel 47.8% £12.95
Speyside, Distillery Bottling
Released in 2013, Balvenie's Single Barrel First Fill was matured in first-fill
bourbon casks for at least 12 years before bottling. These are limited edition
bottlings, with each bottle being one of no more than 300 drawn from a
single cask. Each is also hand-numbered and labelled with the cask
reference number. A deliciously creamy, vanilla-rich whisky from Balvenie.

889 Balvenie 14yrs Caribbean Cask 43% £15.00

This whisky has been matured for 14 years in traditional oak casks before
being transferred to Caribbean rum casks to impart some extra flavour. This
process has created a well-rounded and drinkable whisky with notes of fruit
and vanilla.
664 Balvenie 15yrs Single Barrel 40% £17.50

861 Balvenie Tun 1509 47.1% £22.90
Speyside, distillery bottling
Tun 1509 is four times the size and the first release is a combination of 35
American oak barrels and 7 European oak sherry butts, left to marry for a
few months. This is a rare interpretation of the marrying process and allows
all 42 casks to come together to create a unique expression of The Balvenie
that’s greater than the sum of its constituent parts.
675 Balvenie 21yrs Port Wood 40% £27.65
Speyside, distillery bottling
An additional period of maturation in 30 year-old port pipes has given this
aged Balvenie an extra level of depth and concentration of flavour, adding
potent fruit and smoke notes to the silky-smooth full-bodied palate. Rich,
indulgent, after-dinner Speyside at its best.
862 Balvenie 25yrs Traditional Oak Single Barrel 47.8% £67.00
Speyside, distillery bottling
A 2014 addition to The Balvenie range – Single Barrel, Traditional Oak.
Each bottle is part of a batch of only a few hundred, each filled from a single
cask. Every batch will vary a little, but all will show off the great
combination of subtle spice and honeyed sweetness.
659 Balvenie 30yrs 47.3% £83.75
Speyside, distillery bottling
A Gold Medal Winner at the 2004 International Spirits Challenge. A special
whisky for special occasions or just to reward yourself for being great.
685 Balvenie 40yrs 48.5% £491.20 Speyside, distillery bottling At 40 years of age, this is Balvenie's oldest regularly released bottling. Each
new batch is created as the previous one runs low and is focused around a
careful blend of old sherry and bourbon casks.
811 Benraich 16yrs 40% £15.60 Speyside, distillery bottling Named Best Speyside Single Malt at the 2015 World Whiskies Awards, this
16 year old Benriach was also a Gold Medal winner at the 2006
International Wine and Spirits Competition.
646 Benrinnes 15yrs 43% £17.35
Speyside, distillery bottling
An exquisite and powerful nose. A bittersweet taste with sherry dryness
and oaky smoke and a long, dry finish. Quite similar to the The Macallan
style.
650 Blair Athol 12yrs 43% £17.10
Southern Highlands, distillery bottling
The distillery has always insisted on using Orkney peat, preferred for its
young character. A dry, sharp nose, becoming sweeter and creamier with
some light caramel and heathery overtones.

653 Bowmore Darkest 15yrs 43% £16.50
Islay, distillery bottling
The sherry aroma is fantastic, together with almonds and mature oak. The
peaty notes become an excellent foil to the fruity flavours and do not allow
the sherry to totally dominate. Hints of the sea drift in given a little time in
the glass. Soft over ripe dark grapes flood the palate like an incoming tide.
It’s rich, but not over the top, due to the wonderful heather fire smoky
flavour you will find on the back palate
631 Bowmore 18yrs 43% £24.50
Islay, distillery bottling
From the oldest distillery on Islay, the nose of the 18 year old has autumn
leaves on a damp woodland floor with heather, wood smoke, and waxy apple
peelings, with a citrus fruitiness. On the palate there is a lot more evidence
of the large number sherry casks used at Bowmore. Intensely floral with
more citrus and chocolate. A complex whisky that changes and develops in
the glass, very much a whisky that rewards time and patience.
657 Bowmore 25yrs 43% £62.50
Islay, distillery bottling
Full and round, with a gentle softness, the nose has a strong herb like
fragrance overlying the sherry and peat notes. The palate has plenty of
sherry, but surely as night follows day, you will find the oak, the smoke, the
brine, ending with toffee and hazelnut. The finish is mellow, gentle and
warming.
818 Brora 25yrs, Dun Bheagan Collection 48.5% £167.45
Northern Highlands, distillery bottling
A cask strength and sherried bottling from the magnificent but closed
Highland distillery. Rich, with a good balance between wood and spirit, and
a thread of smoke.
724 Brora 30yrs 55.7% £189.75
Northern Highlands, distillery bottling A rare and superb bottling from this closed distillery. Cool wood smoke on a
frosty morning, hints of stem ginger in syrup and lapsang souchong. A truly
beautiful whisky and incredibly hard to find.
662 Bruichladdich 10yrs 46.3% £17.40
Islay, distillery bottling
The very first 10 year old whisky to be wholly distilled, aged and bottled
following Bruichladdich's resurrection in 2001. In many ways this marks the

From original distillery stock prior to the new owner’s acquisition this
fantastic vintage has a luxurious nose of butterscotch, mint toffee, sweet

This is the relaunched version of Bunnahabhain 18yo, with owners Burn

triumph for Burn Stewart – bravo!
663 Bunnahabhain Moine 59.6% £75.00

This is gorgeous stuff, heavilly peated Bunnahabhain. It came out about the
same time as Ardbeg introduced the very young and didn't get the same
attention due to its limited outrun 310 bottles only. It’s a beautiful, sinewy
dram with immense power, like chewing a well smoked carpet. I tried it and
bought three bottles.

Glencadam 10 stands as a delicate, balanced dram, neither coloured nor
chill-filtered so it retains its true flavour. Nose: Aromatic and fresh. Hay,
fruit, gentle wood influence with light vanilla and spice. Palate: Beautifully
balanced with tart fruits, freshly cut hay and vanilla sweetness. Finish:
Long and gentle as it fades out on barley malt and fruit.

Nose: A dry nose with crisp malt, attractive notes of flowers, fruit
(lemon/quince/dried fruit) oil and a hint of smoke. Palate: Dry and clean to
start, then opens nicely with mid-palate sweetness balancing a firm
structure. Finish: Soft and gentle. Very attractive, highly drinkable malt.
748 Glen Spey 12yrs 43% £12.95
Speyside, distillery bottling
The whisky is very attractive from the very first nosing with an impression
of lightness, together with some spice hints. The taste confirms the first
impression a finish of average length prolongs the pleasure for some
minutes. The second tasting confirmed the rather pleasant character of this
whisky, and the finish seemed longer than the first time. A rather strong
and long aftertaste on malt notes remains for a while in the palate, and the
pleasant spicy taste disappears slowly.

In 2006 Glenfarclas was named distiller of the year by Whisky Magazine. They were nominated
for the award for being ‘consistently good and staying true to our core values.’ For six generations
everyone at Glenfarclas has taken personal pride on the quality of the whisky we produce, so it
was a great pleasure that these values should be recognised by the industry. It was this pride
and sense of history which lead us to create a collection of limited edition. Glenfarclas

824 Glenfarclas Family Cask 1952 96 47.3% £558.00
There is lots of nuttiness and marzipan on the nose, with vanilla
trying to fight its way forward. The taste is light, bitter, sweet,
sour, smoky, every possible combination of flavours. Even some
citrus and orange cordial. At 57 years old, this is the oldest
bottling of Glenfarclas to date.
825 Glenfarclas Family Cask 1957 94 46.2% £233.00
A very rich, dark whisky, which reflects almost no light through
the bottle. Strong, rich tannins are immediately present on the
nose. However, you will also experience lots of sherry, rich stewed
coffee, a fresh bag of liquorice; many different aromas as this
delightful whisky is released into the air. After about 20 minutes
you might even sense macadamia nuts. This is a very big, heavy
whisky rich in alcohol soaked fruit. Almost bitter to begin with,
then a delicate sweetness present. A strong double espresso
immediately comes to mind. It has a bitter, dark chocolate
aftertaste, present for a very long time. In short, a fantastic
whisky. A great treat.
826 Glenfarclas Family Cask 1963 420 56.7% £64.65
A lovely rich, dark whisky colour more often associated with a
dark cognac. A big heavy sherried whisky; great if you like them
big and powerful. This bottling is more than 40 years old but has
lost none of its appeal. Still strong but not overpowering. Some
vanilla and citrus present at the back of your mouth almost like
the caramelised fruit you’d find in a fruit cake. A wonderful long
finish sitting heavily at the back of your mouth. Sherry flavours
and fruit cake wonderfully balanced.

In the summer of 1886 Glenfiddich’s founder, William Grant, set out to fulfil a lifelong ambition
of creating the 'best dram in the valley'. With the help of his seven sons and two daughters,
William built his distillery in a single year. Their hard work was rewarded on Christmas Day
1887 when the first drop of spirit flowed from the small copper pot stills. William named his
distillery Glenfiddich, Gaelic for 'Valley of the Deer'. Over 120 years later, Glenfiddich is one of
the few single malt distilleries to remain entirely family owned and the whisky has become the
world's most awarded single malt, a true reflection of the passion, integrity and innovative spirit
that have been passed down through the generations.

Glenlivet is a special place in Speyside. Translated from Gaelic, the name means
‘Valley of the smooth-flowing one’. Those who christened it were most likely referring to the River
Livet, which surfaces high in the Ladder Hills and meanders down to join the Avon.
But something altogether more sought-after has been flowing here for centuries: whisky.
