REVIEW WHAT KOOTENAY ROCKIES GOLF DOES! After the challenges of the morning round, we were able to take advantage of the openness and flat lies. Because of the river flowing through the course, 11 of the non-par 3 holes have a bend to them, and my favourite was the 14th. This par 5 turns right a full 180 degrees, with water the entire way on the right side. At only 6347 yards, you don’t need driver every hole, and many of the doglegs won’t allow it. Enjoy the sound of the riv- er, the views all around you and the play- ability of this course and you will have a wonderful afternoon. We then made the drive up to Panora- ma, a summer and winter playground way up in the mountains. This is a world-class resort, and that is proven by the number of international members of the great staff. If you like outdoor activities, Panorama is for you. Even more world-class is the golf course. Greywolf is the ultimate mountain course, working up and up on your first three holes before coming back down. Getting to the top of the 3rd hole take a look back and you will be amazed at just how far you have risen. Dramatic views and the greatest set of par 3s anywhere make this a must play for every Canadian golfer. #6, Cliffhanger, will never be forgotten by anyone who plays it, and this whole course is, in a word, memorable. Greywolf is a round you don’t want to end, but when it does you can talk about all the moments in their spectacular new clubhouse, and there will be plenty of mo- ments to go over. We made the drive back down the mountain and arrived at The Springs course at Radium. There is something about this course that I just love, it seems to perfectly encapsulate all the best ele- ments of Kootenay golf. The Springs is just the right amount of challenge, with both treelined holes as well as room off the tee to bomb away. Doglegs left and right, water and big- ger greens with only moderate sloping to them all combine to give you pure golfing pleasure. Like all the courses, the par 3s here are fantastic. The 17th is shorter at only 137 from the blues, but it is mostly carry over the gorge and gave us one of the best views of the trip, with the river below and we could see for miles. This course is one you could easily play multiple times and never get tired of – a golfer’s course. Our last evening we stayed at a B&B up at Kicking Horse, the Vagabond Lodge. Rustic and welcoming, this is the ideal getaway for anyone who wants to leave the world behind and just enjoy the beauty of this Lodge and the surroundings. The next morning we played our fi- nal round, at the Golden Golf Club. I had heard good things about this course but was not prepared for this hidden gem. The incredible layout features a bunch of dogleg lefts but more importantly is laid out right in front of you. Wide forgiving fairways let you swing hard off the tee, and the greens allow you to hit confident approaches with shallow bunkering on the sides and behind. Golden is mountain golf without any of the penal aspects of playing in the mountains. You get all the views and all the elevation changes, but with every hole completely isolated from the others, you can just enjoy your surroundings. If I was going to introduce someone to Rockies golf, this course would be perfect to let them enjoy every aspect of the experience. All good things must come to an end however. 5 hours later we were approach- ing Edmonton and our trip was over. This weekend I will watch the Canadian Open, but I will know that I have already played the most Canadian type of golf there is.
