The pharmaceutical company Boehringer Ingelheim was founded in 1885 by Albert Boehringer (1861-1939) in Ingelheim am Rhein.

From its beginnings in 1885 when it employed just 28 people in Nieder-Ingelheim, the company has since become a global enterprise.

As part of research and development activities for innovative drugs, the company focuses primarily on the therapeutic areas of cardiovascular disease, respiratory diseases, diseases of the central nervous system, metabolic diseases, virological diseases and oncology.

It comprised of a vertical oval with the intertwined letters “CHBS” which symbolize CH Boehringer and Sohn.

DESIGN ELEMENTS OF BOEHRINGER INGELHEIM LOGO The present Boehringer Ingelheim logo was originally designed in 1924. It

was later modified in 1962 to be reworked again in 1997 by Ole Schäfer of MetaDesign.

Color of the Boehringer Ingelheim Logo: The blue color in the Boehringer Ingelheim logo represents

excellence, strength and stability.

Discovery

In 1885, Albert Boehringer purchased a small tartar factory in the Rhine-Hessian village of

Nieder-Ingelheim. On 31 July, his company was included in the commercial register as “Albert

Boehringer, chem. Fabrik vom 1. Aug. 1885 ab”. This laid the foundation for the present-day

company Boehringer Ingelheim.

• He initially manufacture tartaric acid salts used by pharmacies and dyeing works. Demand for

this product surged in the first few years as fizzy lemonade and baking powder become popular.

• In 1893, Boehringer made the ground-breaking discovery that lactic acid can be produced in mass

quantities by means of bacteria, a discovery that saw the company pioneer large-scale "biotech"

production. This new process, combined with the high demand for lactic acid in the dyeing,

leather, textile and food industry, saw the company become the leading manufacturer of this agent.
