Europe’s largest consumer health and fitness event enjoys a near fanatical following, with organisers inundated with messages of support from a fanbase who liken the expo to a second Christmas.

With the audience set to break the 70,000 barrier and the show occupying new, bigger halls in the NEC this year, BodyPower Expo 2015 is billed as the biggest and best event to date.

Organisers have reported a record breaking show cycle, with over 300 leading global brands now occupying more than 600,000 square feet of floor space, roughly equivalent to the size of ten football pitches.

BodyPower CEO and founder Nick Orton still retains the same

excitement levels after more than 20 years in the exhibition business:

“There’s nothing quite like seeing an idea come to fruition. My business talks are called “Think Big” and that’s exactly what we had to do when I started BodyPower with my team.

We’re now the fifth largest consumer event in the UK, and I believe that we continue to improve the show year on year.

We go to great lengths to ensure that our visitors come away from the show inspired, and I think the show creates a really unique atmosphere that is driven by the enthusiasm of our visitors, the quality of our exhibitors and by the countless stars that come to the show.”

Since its formation in 2009, BodyPower has become a staple fixture on the domestic and international fitness calendar.

The hotly anticipated annual event is attended by visitors from over a hundred countries, providing an unrivalled spectacle of fitness and power sports, fantastic competitions, engaging visual displays and an exciting assortment of educational seminars.

All over BodyPower there are chances to participate, with a blend of have-a-go sessions aimed at improving technique, teaching the basics and learning from industry experts.

Of course, there will also be a familiar series of challenges such as Bench Your Bodyweight, 6 Minute Push Up, Plank & Press and Skipping Challenge as the show gives visitors the opportunity to get involved.

BodyPower Director Ollie Upton explains,

We make sure that everything we offer is of the highest standard; from competition to brands to athletes, and this is reflected each year as the show grows bigger and bigger.

For anyone thinking about coming along, I’d suggest getting your tickets early to avoid being disappointed!”

Visitors to the expo can expect to see some fantastic names, with current Mr Olympia Phil Heath, Mr Olympia 212 Flex Lewis, Commonwealth Gold Medallist Zoe Smith, world-famous wrestler Hulk Hogan and inspiring educators such as Phil Learney and Mark Coles.

Given his impressive career to date in gymnastics, martial arts and professional stunt work, founder of Campbell Nutrition, Marvin Campbell, knows first-hand how vital it is to get the body functioning to its maximum potential.Campbell has delivered award winning stunt performances in huge movies such as Skyfall, Inception, Quantum of Solace, Casino Royale, The Da Vinci Code, Mission Impossible and many others, and he now heads a nutrition supplement company dedicated to supplying high-quality fitness supplements and vitamins. BodyPower Times caught up with Marvin for a talk about his plans for BP 2015 and to reflect on his achievements. BP: Marvin, tell us about your back-ground in the fitness industry – how and where did it all begin? MC: From a very young age I’d always been physical, but gymnastics was something I really excelled in. I also tried my hand at martial arts but this was more to do with my interest in learning to fight than to compete! My career as a gymnast lasted 20 years, which saw me become a Junior British Champion, 2 x Senior Brit-ish Champion, 5 x World Championship Competitor and a 1992 Olympian. BP: How did this influence your ca-reer as a stuntman? MC: When I finished competing, I then taught gymnastics before deciding I needed something more academic to fall back on. I moved into very much less

physical areas of learning and employ-ment but I felt the lack of physical activi-ty and challenge wasn’t fulfilling enough and became very bored, very quickly. BP: What was your first big break in the stunt performer business and the most memorable role to date? MC: My motion picture big break (before becoming specialised) came in 2002 with the release of 28 Days Later, in which I played Mailer the infected zombie soldier. Then after gaining official British Stunt Register recognition in 2005, I performed stunts in The Da Vinci Code, Casino Roy-ale and The Bourne Ultimatum. I think my most memorable role was in Casino Roy-ale - I went into hospital with a smashed up leg and twice for concussion! I designed fight scenes in both Inception and Quantum of Solace, which is a proud achievement of mine (and the stunt team involved), a credit I put down to my martial arts background! The 3 Taurus Awards I won for Casino Royale, The Dark Knight and Inception are all high up the list of memorable moments also. BP: How fit do you need to be to be a successful stuntman? How many hours a week do you train? MC: This all depends on which kind of stunts you are doing. I always keep myself fit and in shape but my roles are usually very physical so this is key to the

job! There are always newer and younger people coming in so you need to keep fit-ness above and beyond what is expected of you.

Personally, I would find the downfall of a stunt, establish what could go wrong and where I need to up my game and then come back the next day ready for ac-tion, having possibly hurt myself the day before! On jobs I go to the gym 6 days a week (about 40 min sessions) focus-ing on 5 or 6 core exercises all around strength to ensure I am on top form for what I need to do on film.

BP: How do you fuel your training? Do you follow a strict nutrition regime? MC: I use my own supplements as they have what I need for my lifestyle. Nutri-tion wise, this is always very directed and specific. If I know a film is coming up I will change my diet according to what will be needed of me. For example, going into Tarzan last year, all we had to wear was a thong and leather wrap so I catered my diet to make sure I was as in shape as some of the 20 year olds on the job! I stuck to the Paleo diet - small and often. Over Winter I change my diet to put on healthy kilos. BP: Speaking of nutrition - tell us about your company, Campbell Nutri-tion, and what encouraged you take this venture on? MC: Whilst working on films and in train-ing, I used to try all sorts of different sup-

plement brands like I was some sort of a guinea pig. I just thought to myself one day, I’m at the point where I’m now very much informed on what kind of things I need to fuel my body, so why am I buying everyone else’s stuff? There’s got to be another vehicle. You can always rely on yourself and be-cause I’m part of the film industry with background knowledge of what we need as performers, I decided to launch a brand which will be focussed on those with a vested interest in what I personally and others in my industry needed. I felt best placed to do this and bring it to what I do in a healthy way.

At the moment there’s no consistency as all brands have a different formula and with people being influenced by ever changing prices, deals, discounts, fan-cy flash-in-your-face labels and brightly coloured packaging I felt now is the time for a brand to stand out from the crowd. Knowing what is needed to fuel a perfor-mance, I believe Campbell Nutrition can keep it consistent. BP: This is the first time Campbell Nu-trition will be exhibiting at BodyPow-er – where did you first hear about the show? MC: I had heard of BodyPower over the past few years, as anyone in the fitness industry would have done, but when Carl got in touch last year about showcasing the brand, I started to see things differ-ently, there was more to everything than I imagined. This is the first event we have ever exhibited our products at, and it just so happens to be the biggest health & fit-ness event in Europe…so no pressure!

BP: Finally, as a man who seems to succeed in all of his pursuits, what advice would you offer anyone seek-ing a career in the fitness industry? MC: Compete against yourself, don’t get drawn into competing against anyone else. Stay positive, train hard, work hard and reap the rewards.

“From a very young age I’d always been physical, but gymnastics was something I really excelled in.”

BodyPower is delighted to announce the arrival of Kangen Water to BodyPower Expo this year from 15th- 17th May 2015.

Kangen Water is the registered trademark of Enagic, a Japanese company who celebrated their 37th year in June 2011 as a specialised manufacturer of high quality water ionizer generating systems.

Today Enagic’s pledge to realise a revolution in True Health – in the form of physical health, economic health and mental health – is supported by thousands of people around the world.

The human body is comprised of 70% water. It is no exaggeration to say that “the basis of vitality and long life is water.” Enagic offers safe water that can be used with confidence to benefit health, beauty, sanitation and cuisine.

Wade Lightheart, 3 times Canadian National Bodybuilding Champion, was one of the first High Performance

Athletes in North America to incorporate Kangen Water into his training Regime.

“Kangen Water is unique in its ability to hydrate the body and remove

acidic waste. It is also one of the most powerful anti-oxidants available which is essential to neutralise the ‘free-radicals’ produced by athletic training or even your nutrition.

On top of that, Kangen water is micro-clustered/re-structured water which allows the water to achieve super-hydration within the cells of your body. These three factors, PH, Hydration and anti-oxidation allows this water to make you bigger, faster and stronger at a pace that nothing

else can achieve”.

Shan Stratton, Nutritional Consultant to the Seattle Seahawks, winners of the 2014 Super Bowl: “Nutrient utilisation is more important than nutrient consumption. Kangen Water provides the perfect delivery mechanism for nutrients and minerals to the cells of the body.”

Amazingly, the wonderful uses for coconut oil aren’t confined to the kitchen – it works as an effective natural beauty product, too.

Try using coconut oil as an intensive moisturiser or massage oil, or for healing tough skin from running or weightlifting.

Chocolate Protein Pancake with Oats

INGrEDIENTS:

METHOD

60g porridge oats

100g courgettes, chopped

1 egg

½ tsp baking powder

1 scoop chocolate protein powder

150g almond milk

1 small banana about 75g

Lucy Bee Coconut Oil

Optional add 1 tsp cacao powder for more chocolate flavour

1) We love using our NutriBullet to make our pancake mixture. Start by blitzing the oats to a flour consistency, then add in the remaining ingredients (apart from our oil) and whizz smooth.

2) Next, add the Lucy Bee to a frying pan. When it’s hot, add small amounts of the mixture to the pan (we like to make the pancakes in small batches so we don’t overcrowd the pan.)

3) Cook over a medium heat for about three minutes, then flip and cook for a further minute on the other side.

4) Serve with raspberries, yoghurt or toppings of your choice.

After securing the Sandow trophy for a fourth consecutive year, Phil ‘The Gift’ Heath has cemented his place amongst the greats of the sport. Ambitious as ever, Phil is gearing up for another huge year, balancing his time between promoting his Gifted Nutrition brand with his pursuit of more titles.

BodyPower were delighted to announce Phil Heath as a headline name for both BodyPower India and BodyPower UK, bringing the champion closer to his fans.BodyPower Times caught up with Phil for a talk about his plans for 2015 and to re-flect on his achievements.

BP: Phil, you had a background as a basket-ball player so what made you want to make the transition into bodybuilding and do you get the same buzz?

PH: I got into bodybuilding for the sim-ple reasons of wanting to look better and feel great every day. I was learning how to transform and sculpt my body in addi-tion to gaining valuable knowledge in my health & wellness. As far as a buzz, well, you learn very quickly that training brings out an amazing endorphin release which provides some awesome workouts.

BP: 2014 was an extremely busy year for you, winning a fourth consecutive Olympia title and starting your own company, Gifted Nutrition. Tell us about your involvement in Gifted and how have you managed to bal-ance business and training?

PH: I learned how to multitask while being a collegiate student athlete while playing basketball at the University of Denver. I was majoring in Business and in Information Technology while playing basketball for the Pioneers (1998-2002). Utilising my knowledge of business in addition to the discipline I had in college meant starting Gifted Nutrition with great-er confidence.

I’m surrounded by amazing employees, an outstanding partner and CEO (Joey Firestone) and I’m the President, pro-viding my honest perspective on what I feel sports nutrition should be is simply a dream turned into reality. Many fans of bodybuilding have jobs where they must prioritise their workouts around family, work and other commitments so I feel I can relate to them and they can relate to me being a businessman. Surrounding oneself with great people has enabled

me to do my work in the gym but also in the boardroom.

BP: Talk me through your training philoso-phy; how does it differ from some of your big rivals?

PH: My training philosophy revolves around my “4-T’s Principle” which is:

Technique - proper formTempo - rhythm of repetitionsTime under tension - the amount of time elapsed where the muscle is firing at its peak contractionTrust - being able to be honest of one’s own abilities to ensure safety and great intensity.

I don’t pay much attention to my so called rivals as I truly believe bodybuilding is about me focusing on what makes me my absolute best. As being 4-Time Mr. Olympia I also recognise that my meth-ods pay off greater dividends so no need to use anyone else’s approach!

BP: The 2014 Olympia was historic being the 50th anniversary and being televised, how did it feel to edge out Kai [Greene] to take the title?

PH: I felt great winning the 50th Mr. Olym-pia as it was a special event with more fans than ever in attendance. The crowd was simply incredible and completing my task of winning my fourth Sandow was good, but when I realised it was a limit-ed edition 1 of 1 18kt Gold Sandow now that made it one of the greatest moments of my life. No other Mr. Olympia cham-pion has a Gold Sandow so it’s a great achievement.

BP: After four titles, 2015 will be another huge year for you. Have you set yourself a long term goal for how many titles you want to win?

PH: Each year has its own story, strug-gle and of course triumphs. I’d love to fo-cus on winning 2015 and then aiming for 6,7,8,9 and then 10! I aim high but don’t forget that I have a lot of other battles I must win to even put myself in contention for that type of success.

BP: As a champion, you’re very connected to your fans. By attending shows like Body-Power India and BodyPower UK, are you try-ing to increase awareness of the sport?

PH: I’m the first IFBB PRO bodybuilder and Mr. Olympia to win a contest in In-dia which allows me to support Indian bodybuilding even more than some oth-er countries. The people there are be-coming more aware of their fitness and wellness so it reminds me of when I first began my journey of bodybuilding.

I want to participate with the people of In-dia to encourage them on setting healthy fitness and bodybuilding goals and that’s why I attend the shows. I also remember doing my first BodyPower UK show and there I met tons of people that were ex-tremely interested in bodybuilding and wellness which made my meet & greets a more pleasurable experience. I’m meeting all of the fans and cannot wait to bring my enthusiasm to both India and UK BodyPower shows.

BP: What do you think will be your biggest challenge in 2015, and what are your aims for this year?

PH: My biggest competition will be Phil Heath of 2011 and Phil Heath of 2013! Both of those guys provided a great phy-sique. I’m going against my personal best as it’s truly the only realistic goal I can have since I can’t control others. Plus, those two physiques won the Olympia so for me to compare myself with someone who hasn’t won doesn’t make sense to me.

This doesn’t mean that I don’t respect my competition, but ask yourself this same question and say your answer out loud and if it’s reflecting another person who

you’ve beaten for over 4 straight years, then you’re not being honest with your-self, not confident in your abilities and are simply scared to achieve elite success.

Most people will not understand this mind-set and refer to this as cocky but I don’t think about anything but first place and since that’s who I’ve been since 2011, I only focus on that person because that’s who my competition is looking at.

BP: Who would you say has had the biggest influence on your career?

PH: I’d say watching Jay Cutler’s journey has influenced me a ton. He’s a class

act on and off the stage. I’ve never met a man with that much heart, intelligence and muscle all in one.

BP: Finally, as someone at the peak of their powers, what advice would you give those who would like to compete at the highest level like you’re doing?

PH: I encourage anyone wanting high levels of success in anything especial-ly bodybuilding to learn about the sport, the nutrition, your own personality and willingness to learn and apply concepts quickly and efficiently. Bodybuilding re-quires a ton of focus that never really stops after the workouts are completed.

You’ve got to also find other hobbies to balance you out so you don’t become overwhelmed. Remember this, your best will always be good enough so TRAIN HARD, TRAIN SMART AND HAVE FUN!!!!

“Each year has its own story, struggle and of course triumphs. I’d love to focus on winning 2015 and then aiming for 6,7,8,9 and then 10!”

Billy Amicarelle, Vice President of Nutrex Research, commented, “We’re extremely excited about the launch of our new pre-workout. OUTRAGE is a clear advancement in one of the larg-est categories found in the supplement industry. Hydromax® and Nitrosigine® are simply just two of the key additions to OUTRAGE’s superior formula.”

Insurance is fabulous, isn’t it? It can give you the confidence to start or grow your business, to branch out into new fields, in the knowledge that you have a safety net, should the unfortunate ever occur.

Safe in the knowledge that it will be the Insurance Company, rather than you personally, who will be paying out on any claim. But is that really the case? Do you as a Health and Fitness Professional know what your Insurance will cover you for, or more importantly what it won’t?

Do you know how long your Profes-sional Indemnity Insurance policy would continue to operate, if you were to stop working for any reason, or even why this is important?

Despite the FCA requirements that

Insurance should be ‘clear, fair and not misleading’, it can sometimes be confusing.

Good quality Insurance for Health and Fitness Professionals should include Public Liability, Medical Mal-practice, Breach of Confidentiality, Financial Loss, Criminal and Tax de-fence, Loss of Reputation and Prod-ucts Liability cover, to include both advice, treatments/ activities and

any products used – if you don’t have an adequate wording, you could find yourself held financially li-able if it were proved that it was your advice, treatment / activities or the products used that were responsible for the clients’ alleged situation.

The statute of limitations for injury claims is generally 3 years, although there are a number of exceptions which means this period could be a lot longer, so you will need a policy that can continue to cover you for at least that long, should you stop working for any reason.

Insurance operates on the principal of utmost good faith. It is your re-sponsibility when insuring your busi-ness that you advise Insurers of any item that may affect their considera-tion of the risk.

If you do not, this may be deemed to be non-disclosure of a material fact,

which may affect your ability to claim on the policy. Similarly with all com-mercial property claims, if you do not cover the full value of your stock or premises, you may be deemed to have under-insured and there will be a proportionate reduction in claims pay outs, even if the value of the claim is lower that the level insured.

Insurance can give you the peace of mind to take that extra leap of faith with your business, but it is impor-tant to ensure that you get good advice when considering your risk management options for both your-self and your business, so that you know that peace of mind is fully jus-tified.
