Consideration of ease of reading is so essential in theplanning of printed matter that every principlehelping to achieve comfort in the assimilation of themessage conveyed by words should always be in theforefront of the typographer's mind. On what does easeof reading depend? On the simpleness of the typedesign, on the length of the type lines and on theirleading, on the spacing of words, and on a principleeither misunderstood or sadly ignored : that of appropriate choice of type for the paper on which it is to beprinted. Many type faces appropriate for the moderatecopy of advertisements are inappropriate for continuous reading in the book or magazine page : many typefaces readable in the larger text sizes lose their clarityin tlie smaller sizes. Wise choices for small text are,therefore^ faces of unobtrusive character and types oflarge x-height whose maximum face-to-body size aidsreadability. While the Egyptian, the Sans Serif, andmany like faces may be rendered eminently readablein the comparatively briefly-worded copy, in lengthycopy the geometrical character of their designs soonpalls on the reader who quickly tires of their uncommon characteristics. Simpleness of type design is asmuch to be desired as sheer beauty of type character,though happily the two virtues often go hand in hand.

Consider also the spacing of words.
