Casa de LuzFall 2007

Casa de Luz is a restaurant and meditation center located within Aust in that promotes heal thy eating and an active lifestyle. We were asked to design a Casa de Luz complex to be placed within the urban landscape, at the intersection of 7th and Congress, in the heart of downtown Austin. My design solution was to create an intimate oasis within the city by bringing visitors into the complex through an outdoor bamboo garden, which has some connection to each of the interior spaces. The structure is a simple steel construction with a restaurant on the f i rst f loor, classrooms and offices on the second floor, and a large meditation space on the top floor. The building is designed with flexibility in mind to allow each space to be used for a variety of activities to respond to the uncertain needs of Casa de Luz. The entire building is wrapped with a wooden screen to provide solar shading and privacy to the inhabitants. The screen stops at about 9 ft above ground level to respond to the canopy level of the surrounding shops and hotels.

The proposed railway station will become one of the primary public squares of Austin. It will serve as a gateway to the East. On a larger scale, the station will act as a central hub for all railway transportation that passes through the heart of the city. But at the scale of the station, it will literally bridge from current downtown Austin into what will become a new axis of the city, a new spine to grow from. This new spine would stem from the initial impact of implementing a major railway network , but it would become much more. This eastern spine could become a district for the arts, bringing together art, architecture, music and education. Public squares would exist at many spots along the spine, but this central station would serve as the first - as a gateway to the arts district.

The main station space would exist in the plaza captured between the two main TOD buildings. This space would also act as a pass through for pedestrians moving

through to destinations beyond. This would be an exterior space that acts and feels as an indoor space. The immediate views to the west would be of the adjacent Waller Creek and its redeveloped terraced steps to the water. Beyond would be the hustle and bustle of downtown. To the east there would be a hardscape public square with amphitheatre space and museums beyond.

The distinguishing element of the station would be the translucent roof that floats between the two TOD buildings to shelter the great hall below. This roof would protect inhabitants from rain while providing ventilation and shade from the harsh summer sun.

A f t e r e x t e n s i v e r e s e a r c h of the area in East Austin along Cesar Chavez St. between I-35 and Pleasant Valley Road, our studio was able to choose several potential sites for development of a new Austin branch library. However, a recently built branch library already catered to the needs of the surrounding community so I decided to create a media library to provide adequate computer facilities as well as an art display center for the neighborhood. I chose a site located within the heart of this particular corridor of the city, which provides a good amount of green space and requires minimal demolition of existing structures. My design proposal consisted of two contrasting spaces; one with a public deep porch encompassing a more private interior lounge space, and the other with a private sphere of individual computer rooms surrounding a public courtyard space. It was also important to me to preserve the existing oak trees on the site, so the building responded by wrapping the courtyard around an existing oak.

This art gallery was designed to accommodate the art of two artists, Donald Judd, most well-k nown for his sculptures, and Robert Rauschenberg, a sculptor a n d p a i n t e r. L o c a t e d a l o n g S outh Congress, the bui ld ing design responded to the modern development of the surrounding sites. The form of the building is derived from two similar forms that create different spaces between them as they intersect. The resultant spaces provide unique daylighting conditions for viewing the different art pieces within. The gallery also has a roof terrace with a sculpture garden and views of the surrounding city.

The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center is located in South Austin and works to increase the sustainable use and conser vation of native wildflowers, plants and landscapes. Our project was to design an entry pavilion for the complex to connect the visitor parking lot to the park while also providing a checkpoint area to purchase tickets and gather if in larger groups. The pavilion also provides restroom facilities and office/security space within. Retaining walls funnel visitors in from the parking lot and align them on axis with the front cistern, which marks the existing entry of the park. A grouping of mature oak trees existed on the site, so special consideration was taken to ensure that the buildings footprint did not disturb these trees. A series of small gardens surround the pavilion to act as an introduction of what is to come in the rest of the Wildflower Center.

Fall Creek WinerySpring 2009

Fall Creek Winery is located in the Texas Hill Country, about 65 miles Northwest of Austin. Our project was to redesign the winery to be reconstructed on the existing site, but first an understanding of the winemaking process was vital to ensure the most efficient production and bottling of the wine. The building is nestled into the side of a hill located on the western edge of the property. This siting allows the climate-sensitive elements of the program to use the mass of the Earth to stabilize temperatures. In addition, this creates an interesting threshold space between the rolling hills to the West and the flat plains to the East. The winery is organized into two levels, with the visitors inhabiting the upper level and the vineyard workers occupying the lower level. A small restaurant and dining area is located on the South end of the building that overlooks the entire vineyard property and out onto the nearby Lake Buchanan. This space can be completely opened up to allow the interior to bleed out into the vines themselves.

The location for this project was Hornsby Bend Bird Observatory, on the Southeast peripher y of Austin along the Colorado River. The site is known for the many different species of birds that visit the area each year. Our project was to design a bird blind on the site to allow birdwatchers to view and photograph birds on the lake with as little disturbance as possible. I n addit ion, the development was to provide restroom facilities and shaded gathering space for larger groups. I designed a simple structure that consisted of just two walls of varying width and a large bending roof, which acts to designate different areas. The result is an elegant and minimal structure that uses the sun and wind patterns of the site to its advantage to provide a functional space.
