Bob McNair Is Packing Up

Having seen NCAR grow from a staff of about 150,Bob McNair is retiring after 25 years of dealing with ourmail. Bob, now the manager of Shipping and Receiving, came to NCAR in 1963 as a receiving clerk.

When Bob was hired, there were two staff members inShipping and Receiving, who also filled other assignmentsthat now require separate jobs. "We took care of the stockroom," Bob said. "It was very haphazard; whoever thoughtthey needed something would just order it. We assignedproperty numbers to pieces of furniture or equipment. Nowthere's a property officer for that. We also turned in themileage for the government vehicles. There were only ,two." Besides three Shipping and Receiving clerks, Bobnow manages four mailroom staff, who also are respon-sible for transportation.

* Of his job, Bob remarked, "There are lots of things youhave to cultivate good old common knowledge for." Forexample, he mentioned the oddly shaped instruments he'sbeen responsible for packing and sending off to fieldprojects in exotic locales over the years. "When scien-tists build something, they don't always remember that ithas to be shipped. An instrument may have only a fewpoints that can support its weight. You have to figure outhow to anchor it and pack it so it won't get broken."

Bob's biggest challenge along these lines wasshipping a telescope built at NCAR to the Mauna Loa SolarObservatory in Hawaii. "It was shipped assembled, in anairplane that was 15 feet 2 inches long and about 50inches tall and wide. All the people at the airport said, 'Itwon't fit.' "After March 31st, I'll be jobless and homeless," Bobsaid with a smile. He has sold his Boulder house and isconsidering a move to Imperial, Nebraska, where he grewup, or to the Western Slope, to be near his son. "I haveseven brothers-in-law and I don't know how many nephewsand nieces," he said, "so I may take a long trip."

UCAR Board Holds Annual Meeting

The annual meeting of the UCAR Board of Trusteeswas held on 16-17 February at the National ScienceFoundation (NSF) in Washington, D.C. The followingactions may be of interest to NCAR readers.

Five researchers were given NCAR affiliate scientistdesignations: Timothy Killeen (University of Michigan),who will be collaborating with the High Altitude Observa-tory (HAO); Leif Kristensen (Risce National Laboratory,Roskilde, Denmark), who will be affiliated with theMesoscale and Microscale Meteorology Division; KarinLabitzke (Free University of Berlin, Federal Republic ofGermany), who will be working with the Climate and GlobalDynamics Division; and Dimitri Mihalas (University ofIllinois) and Robert Rosner (University of Chicago), both ofwhom will be affiliated with HAO.

NCAR director Richard Anthes presented NCAR'sproposed plan for fiscal years 1989 to 1993 and receivedauthorization to submit the plan to NSF. UCAR Foundation

president John Dutton reviewed the status of the founda-tion's efforts at transferring into the private sector tech-nology and intellectual property developed through UCARactivities.

NSF director Erich Bloch and deputy director JohnMoore discussed with the trustees foundation budgets forfiscal years 1988 and 1989. Bloch stated that significantincreases in grant size and increased numbers of awardsto individual investigators will not, in general, be possiblethis year, nor will any new starts in facilities.

Trustee George Benton reported on the ad hoc Mem-bership and Governance Committee meeting held on15 February in Washington, D.C. The trustees approvedincreasing the initial UCAR membership fee from $3,500 to$10,000. Two other matters needing bylaw changes will bebrought to the annual members' meeting in October. These are a possible renewal fee and the method ofnominating trustees. *Dianne Bernier

Are You a Veteran?

Personnel Services needs help locating two types ofveterans to fulfill a new requirement for all governmentcontractors. The program is to assure that such em-ployers take affirmative action to hire and promoteveterans.

The first group is called Vietnam-era veterans, defined as those who had more than 180 days of activeservice, any part of which was between 5 August 1964and 7 May 1975, who were discharged with anything otherthan a dishonorable discharge or were discharged orreleased from active duty because of a service-connecteddisability. The second group, labeled special disabledveterans, includes veterans who are entitled to compen-sation for certain degrees of disabilities under the laws of

Cafe Returns to Foam Cups

Last year, the NCAR cafeteria began using papercups because chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) are often usedas a foaming agent in the production of foam cups. Thepaper cups cost more than three times as much as foamand do not insulate as well. Recently, cafeteria staff havelearned that Dart Container Corp., NCAR's foam cupsupplier, does not use CFCs. Therefore, the cafeteria willresume using foam cups from Dart.
