Bob Blake's love of roaming and writing was one of the
reasons he seized the offer of a regular commissionand a
chance to see the worldwith the Marines in World War II.
He was awarded the Silver Star and took over the command
of the Ninth Tank Platoon in the Pacific before being recalled
to Headquarters in Washington to turn out action reports. One
such report was published in the Saturday Evening Post in
1944. Bored with inaction he transferred to Marine Aviation,
got his wings, and then had to face law school. It is at this
point that I'LL TAKE THE HIGH ROAD begins, and also the
adventures which are the life and blood of this book.

HIGH ROAD is his story of the sixteen action-
packed months that followed.
With only enough money to get to New
York, Blake landed a job as seaman on the
Greek tramp S.S. Odi'ssey. After storming
the Acropolis and Mt. Olympus, where he
fell in with guerrillas, he picked up Alexan
der the Great's route of conquest through
the fabled Middle East. Along the way he
scaled the dome of Santa Sophia at midnight,
pried into the secrets of the ancient, long-lost
city of Petra, and searched out the mysteries
of the haunted Valley of the Assassins.
Nishapur, the city of Omar Khayyam,
Baghdad, and Srinagar arc a few of the
magic cities Blake describes. His story cap
tures the thrill of houseboating in Kashmir,
of crossing the Khyber Pass, of circling Mt.
Everest, of hitch-hiking on the Road to
Mandalay, and crossing China in a jeep
called The Reluctant Dragon.

Osborne Putnam Stearns has delightfully
blended a brief guide book of Paris, a sketchy
history of the city and some of its restaurants,
and a cookbook. Stearns writes even better
than he broadcasts over the radio, which he
has done for 20 years as the Food Magician,
and his book is difficult to lay down, whether
you are reading for profit or pleasure. . . .
This book has exceeded my expectations. 1
found myself being led thru many of the
interesting streets of Paris, particularly the
side streets, and into some of the out-of-
the-way places that are seldom discovered
by tourists. Morrison Wood, Chicago
