Matthew 14:22-33Immediately he made the disciples get into the boat and go on

ahead to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. 23 And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, 24 but by this time the boat, battered by the waves, was far from the land, for the wind was against them. 25 And early in the morning he came walking toward them on the sea. 26 But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, saying, "It is a ghost!" And they cried out in fear. 27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them and said, "Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid." 28 Peter answered him, "Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water." 29 He said, "Come." So Peter got out of the boat, started walking on the water, and came toward Jesus. 30 But when he noticed the strong wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, "Lord, save me!" 31 Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, "You of little faith, why did you doubt?" 32 When they got into the boat, the wind ceased. 33 And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, "Truly you are the Son of God."

Mark 6:45-56Immediately Jesus made his disciples get into the boat and go on

ahead to the other side, to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd. 46 After saying farewell to them, he went up on the mountain to pray. 47 When evening came, the boat was out on the sea, and he was alone on the land. 48 When he saw that they were straining at the oars against an adverse wind, he came towards them early in the morning, walking on the sea. He intended to pass them by. 49 But when they saw him walking on the sea, they thought it was a ghost and cried out; 50 for they all saw him and were terrified. But immediately he spoke to them and said, "Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid." 51 Then he got into the boat with them and the wind ceased. And they were utterly astounded, 52 for they did not understand about the loaves, but their hearts were hardened. 53 When they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret and moored the boat. 54 When they got out of the boat, people at once recognized him, 55 and rushed about that whole region and began to bring the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was. 56 And wherever he went, into villages or cities or farms, they laid the sick in the marketplaces, and begged him that they might touch even the fringe of his cloak; and all who touched it were healed.

Bible StudyCompare and contrast Matthew and Mark’s

telling of this story. Why was Jesus not with the disciples on the

boat? What do we learn from this? What role does prayer play in your faith life? Why did Jesus walk on water? Why did Peter ask to come out on the water? When you are in turbulent times and are at

the end of reasoning for your troubles, do you tend to focus on the trouble or keep our eyes upon Jesus?

Tell about a time when God has pulled you up out of ‘turbulent waters.’

We boarded the boat at Kibubutz Ginosar. During a severe drought in 1986, the water level of the Sea of Galilee dropped to reveal the frame of an ancient

fishing boat. That vessel has since been carbon dated from 100 BCE to 70 CE, thus being dubbed “the Jesus Boat.”

They do a flag raising ceremony where they raise the flag of Israel and whatever country the

visitors are from.

Sea of Galilee Has various other names including Sea of Tiberias, Gennesaret or in Hebrew it is Kinneret which is derived from Hebrew word ‘Kinnor’ which means harp

Although called a sea, Sea of Galilee is actually a freshwater inland lake. At 702 Feet below Sea Level it is the lowest freshwater lake

in the world. Maximum depth of sea is 140 feet.

The lake is eight miles wide and thirteen miles long and is fed by the Jordan River that runs in from the north.

The lake is Israel’s primary source of water

Today thirty-five species of fish make their home in the waters of the Sea of Galilee and the Jordan River, but

three types seem to be most common in the New Testament record.

The sardines were a staple of the locals’ diet and these were probably the “two small fish” which Jesus used to feed the multitude. The musht fish has a long

dorsal fin which resembles a comb and is today popularly known as “St. Peter’s fish” (pictured below) The third type is the catfish, which is not considered

kosher because of its lack of scales.
