Bernard Pictet

ernard Pictet is a renown French glass maker artist. He studied law for two years, and this must have gi-ven him a certain rigour required in glass making work where any deviation in the making process will result in a fail. He worked alongside artists, architects and interior designers for years. Learning the very specific rules of glass making, the accurate use of geometry in architecture, and broadening his artistic creativity. In 1981 he opened his studio in Paris, offering luxurious architectural works and decorative items which we can admire throughout the world. In museums like at the decorative arts museums in Paris, hotels , luxurious malls such as in the Marunouchi commercial centre in Tokyo, major head offices… Bernard Pictet’s mas-

tery of glass attract an international up-scale clientele including Chanel, Dior, Guerlain, Hermès, Louis Vuit-ton, Cartier, Boucheron and Chaumet in addition to numerous personalities. All the etched glass work for the Tour Odéon in Monaco is by the Studio, which also took part in the Monaco Yacht Show 2018. Engraved, chiselled, etched, silvered or gilded, glass by Bernard Pictet adorns majestical yachts (27 mega yachts to date), including the sailing yacht Zefira, Satori by Hee-sen yacht, the 80 meters yacht Air, and the all alumi-nium (and glass) Quinta Essentia. The transparency and reflection properties of glass are so similar to water, that this material is more and more present in yacht designs. The Studio works exclusively to order,

making bespoke pieces and continually inventing new patterns and effects, sometimes in consultation with the client. These pieces are, for the most part, large formats in safety glass whose precious and luxurious properties command a high price. The mesmeric ef-fect is a result of the studio expert knowledge of glass making techniques such as sandblasting, saw-en-graving, cutting, abrasion, UV bonding, cold forming, chiselling, and many others. Finishing techniques include gilding, silvering, lead silvering, screenprinting and coloured lamination. Using glass which change in aspect as the observer moves, the studio creates pieces with kinetic art, as waves over the ocean. The studio also creates fascinating elements combining glass and moving images, for a guaranteed “wow” factor. Glass is a fascinating material and medium, thanks to Bernard Pictect’s experience, knowledge and investment we are invited in admiring all the ar-tistic potential of glass.
