The Governors of the School require that every pupil whose parents are resident abroad has a suitable educational guardian living in this country. Where parents find it difficult to nominate a relative or good acquaintance for this purpose we suggest they refer to the AEGIS website at www.aegisuk.net as a starting point. In a recent questionnaire, pupils reported good experiences with Bright World. We have also met a Bright World director and a consultant with Carfax Educational Guardians, both of whom appear to offer a good service.

The Role of an Educational Guardian An educational guardian of a pupil from abroad is expected to take a personal interest in the progress and welfare of the young person. The degree of this must, of course, be a matter for discussion between, and approval by, both the pupil’s parents and the educational guardian. We are always happy for educational guardians to attend school functions such as open days and parents’ evenings when parents cannot be present. Boarding houses and their staff will always welcome educational guardians as they would parents, both for particular occasions or as casual visitors. Copies of grades and reports can be sent to educational guardians (with the permission of the parents).

Sometimes a pupil finds himself or herself needing advice and guidance on academic or personal matters from someone representing their family; in this kind of situation an educational guardian can be very helpful. There may, infrequently, be instances when a boy or girl is unwell or involved in an accident when it is desirable to have an educational guardian close at hand for consultation and support, or to accommodate a boarder with an infectious illness. Very rarely we may need to discuss disciplinary matters at first hand with someone representing a pupil’s parents.

In the unlikely event of planes being grounded (e.g. due to bad weather) and students needing to leave the boarding house (e.g. at the end of term or in the case of a flu pandemic) a UK based educational guardian must be available to collect students.

Students with UKBA Tier 4 visas Parents should also be aware that for any student studying on a tier 4 visa, the UKBA require that a suitable educational guardian is appointed, and that Sevenoaks School, (as the sponsoring authority), keep records of the student’s whereabouts during half terms and holidays.

Specific Requirements and Responsibilities An educational guardian should:

• Be at least 25 years old and live within reasonable travelling distance from Sevenoaks. • Care for the pupil in an emergency, including in the event of infectious illness or if the school is

closed due to a pandemic. • Be prepared to take temporary care when a pupil has been suspended for a serious breach of the school rules. • Look after pupils on occasions at weekend leaves, or when flights home are after the end of term. • Always advise the school and the parents if they plan to go away during term time.

Experience shows that these responsibilities can be rewarding and that being an educational guardian makes a significant contribution to ensuring that boarding is a happy and enjoyable experience for young people coming from overseas. Educational guardians will find that they are looking after someone who is sensible, intelligent and hardworking and who will repay the interest and kindness shown to them. Boarding Information Boarding trips information The boarding community runs optional trips most Sundays. These outings are targeted mainly at Middle School (Years 9, 10 and 11) pupils, but some may be appropriate for older pupils too. Trips have been planned to the following locations:

• Bluewater Shopping Centre - Ten Pin Bowling • Cinema - Quasar – formerly Laser Quest • Brighton - Ice-skating • Thorpe Park - Swimming • Chessington Amusement Park - National Trust Properties • London – Shopping and to Art Galleries - Sports fixtures

From time to time Houses will also organise mid-week trips, for example to the theatre in London or similar venues. Travel for these trips will usually be by contracted coach, School minibus or by train. All boarding trips are risk-assessed and staffed according to government recommendations. Most of these trips will involve some extra cost to parents to cover travel and entrance to the attraction – this would rarely exceed £20. Please do not hesitate to contact the Head of Boarding if you have any queries ([email protected]). In loco parentis information A Boarding Housemaster/mistress (also known as the BHM) assumes the position defined as in loco parentis. In a residential situation we are responsible for your son or daughter 7 days a week and 24 hours a day, even when we are technically ‘off duty’. According to the Children Act 1989 we will undertake to:

‘Do what is reasonable in all the circumstances for the purpose of safeguarding or promoting the child’s welfare.’ Holding this position grants a BHM certain obligations towards, as well as, powers over each student in his/her care. However, we do not operate as legal guardians as appointed in a court. We have a ‘duty of care’, but can only carry out certain responsibilities if given specific authority to do so. Below we have compiled a list of things which we need to be in a position to authorise on your behalf. Please let your child’s Houseparent know if you are not happy for them to do so.

• To authorise any expenditure on the School bill up to £75. • To authorise boarding and school day trips. • To authorise visits to day pupils’ houses during the day, as long as an adult is present. • To authorise Sixth Formers’ trips to London/Tunbridge Wells etc…

There are also times when boarding staff might take your child in our private cars rather than a school minibus, for example to a hospital appointment, or to a boarding activity. Please do discuss this with us if it is of any concern to you. Please remember that your child is a member of the Sevenoaks School community, and as such is subject to all its rules and regulations during term times, and when travelling to and from our care to yours. The school rules are available electronically on the school’s website. Parents cannot authorise pupils to do things that are contrary to our rules. We hope that you will support us in our decisions, which are made with the best interests of your child and all of the children in our care.

WEEKEND PROCEDURE AND PARTIES

Students are allowed to leave the House on any Saturday of term after their sports commitments are fulfilled. They must obtain proper consents from their parents or educational guardian and the Housemaster/mistress on each occasion. If a boarder wishes to spend the night with their educational guardian, we would expect to hear from parents or the educational guardian to confirm this. Phone, email or letter is fine. In the case of a boarder spending the night elsewhere, we would expect to hear from either the parent or educational guardian giving consent AND from the host parents or an adult at the address at which the boarder will be staying, detailing travel arrangements as well as confirming the overnight stay. In each case a phone call, letter or email is fine. We would also endeavour to obtain full information about the level of supervision and the plans for the weekend. In the case of parties**, the School insists that parents give written permission for their child to attend, this could be by email or letter. We expect - The boarder to tell the Housemaster/mistress about the party in good time. - The host parent of the party to contact the Head of Boarding and then complete a copy of our

party form, giving assurances about the level of parental or adult supervision, that alcohol (if any) will not be consumed to excess and that the sleeping arrangements give proper thought to gender.

- The boarder's parents or educational guardian (if parents have given the guardian authority to

do so) to call the Housemaster/mistress who will then inform them of the arrangements. This will allow the parents or educational guardians to give an informed consent. This consent must include details of travel arrangements to and from the party.

The Housemaster/mistress has the right to ask a boarder to stay in the House if they feel the student’s academic work is in need of attention or if they are not fully satisfied with the arrangements for the party. **A full set of party guidelines is given on the party form, which is also available on the boarding section of Parents Pages. However, parents should note that we do not allow boarders below the Sixth Form to attend parties where alcohol is served. These rules apply to all boarders in our care.

BOARDERS MAY NOT LEAVE THEIR HOUSE UNTIL All CONSENTS HAVE BEEN APPROVED BY THE BOARDING HOUSEMASTER/MISTRESS

FOR YEAR 9 ONLYSailing at Sevenoaks

Dear Parent,

Sailing is a popular and successful sport at Sevenoaks School. A limited number of pupils may start sailing in Year 9, with training and competitions taking place at a local sailing club on Bough Beech reservoir.

The school has a fleet of 26 Firefly dinghies and 23 RS Fevas, supported by four 4.8m safety boats. School teams take part in school, university and open events with a high level of success. The school has won the International Schools Championships 18 out of the last 22 years and are currently the leading British School in team racing, with the team recently qualifying to represent GBR U19’s at the 2015 team racing world championships. We have also competed on the RS Feva circuit in the last few years. The School also has excellent sailing coaches, including Head of Sailing Andy Cornah, ISAF team racing world champion 2011 and UK team racing national champion on several occasions.

For pupils wishing to join sailing start in Year 9, previous experience isn’t essential but as we have a limited numbers of places, priority is likely to be given to those that do. If possible before starting pupils should complete an RYA level 2 course - there are several training centres in the area that offer this over the summer, the best being Bewl Valley SC or Bewl Valley outdoor centre (details of centres can be found on the RYA website www.rya.org.uk). If you need any further help with this please let me know.

In Year 9 sailing takes place on Thursdays and Saturdays during the Michaelmas, Lent and Summer Terms in the normal games sessions. Those selected to sail will not be able to play other team sports that take place at the same time. Many pupils carry on with squash, tennis and swimming, but need to do this after school.

Pupils who sail are currently charged £150 per term - which equates to around £7 per session. They must also purchase their own sailing clothing which can be done independently or through the school - initially there will be clothing available to borrow.

Should you wish your son/daughter to choose sailing in Year 9 please complete the attached form and return it to the school FAO Andrew Cornah, master in charge of sailing, or via email. Further information will then be sent out in due course.

If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact me: [email protected]

Yours Faithfully,Andrew Cornah

Dear Parent

New Parents’ Tea, Saturday 24 June 2017 in the Dining Hall.

Parents, guardians and students starting the school in September 2017 are warmly invited to join us for the New Parents’ Tea on Saturday 24 June 2017, 4:00–5:30pm in the Dining Hall.

This very popular informal event will give you and your children the opportunity to meet other new families who are joining Sevenoaks School in September 2017. Siblings are also welcome to attend.

Members of the Friends of Sevenoaks (FoS) will be there to answer any questions you may have. If you are unable to attend, for example if you live overseas, please be assured there will be plenty more opportunities to join FoS events in the future, or you can get in touch via the contact details given on the FoS pages of the school website.

Although some senior staff members will be present, this tea focuses on parents and children meet-ing one another rather than providing an opportunity for parents to meet staff. Tutor meetings will take place after the children start in September.

Finally, the Second Hand Uniform Shop will be open for you to visit during the tea. Payment for any items purchased needs to be with cash or cheques on the day.

To confirm your attendance, please register online here – www.sevenoaksschool.org/tea before Saturday 17 June 2017. If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact Joanna Newsome (FoS Chair), at [email protected]

We look forward to welcoming you on 24 June.

With best regards

Dear Students,

RE: Trinity/LAMDA Acting Lessons

I hope you are all settling back into school and are settling in if it’s your first year here.

If you are interested in Acting and/or would like to work on your skills as an actor, Trinity/LAMDA Acting Lessons are available for you as either a solo performer or in a pair. Acting les-sons may appeal not only to budding thespians but also those who enjoy speech-making, writing, mime, reading aloud for performance. During the lessons, we work on acting technique and the process of developing a character; you also have the opportunity to work on poems, improvisation, devised pieces, classic texts from playwrights such as Shakespeare and modern texts from play-wrights such as Dennis Kelly (who wrote the script for Matilda The Musical). The skills developed have a wider impact which includes an awareness of personal presentation, speech and communi-cation, movement, management of nerves and confidence building. They support academic work and other drama classes/productions in this way, as well as developing imagination, creativity, performance skills and literacy.

Where Trinity and LAMDA are unique is that the lessons are highly personal and therefore in-dividually tailored. The solo or pair lessons allow teacher and student to foster a close and trust-ing relationship away from the judgement of peers. This is a great platform to explore individual talent, to accumulate specific and useful performance/life skills with the exams providing a clear goal. It is also worth mentioning that if you would like to apply to universities in Upper Sixth, you will need to fill out a UCAS form which will collate points together from your IBs, Duke of Edin-burgh award, music examinations and other extra-curricular activities. If you continue with Trini-ty/LAMDA Acting lessons to Advanced Level, you will also receive points which will undoubtedly strengthen your applications.

Sevenoaks School has four trained actors, Mrs A Cordon Bates, Mrs K Brown, Miss A Comper and Ms C Dunn (cover teacher) who teach both Trinity and LAMDA board examinations. The lesson is charged and added to your bill at the end of each term. Please contact either Mrs A Bates, Miss A Comper or Mrs K Brown for more information.

Mrs Kate Brown: Trinity/LAMDA teacher (Mondays)[email protected]

Dear Prospective L6

We are delighted that you will be joining the Sevenoaks Sixth Form in September and would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to the Institute for Higher Education and Professional Insight at Sevenoaks. We aim to support you throughout your Sixth Form career and will help you at every step of your application to university whether it be in the UK, US or elsewhere.

We take a view that the Michaelmas term of the Lower Sixth is a time to get to know the school, make new friends and settle down and that you need a bit of breathing space from big decisions about your future. To this end, you will have your first introductory Higher Education Assembly at the end of Michaelmas term. Subsequently, you will communicate your potential areas of degree interest and we will allocate you an appropriate Higher Education Advisor with whom you will meet in the Lent term. All Higher Education meetings are recorded in your individual Higher Education Profile where you keep a record of any activities which might be linked to your future university application.

In the Lent term you will also have a series of talks called ‘A Beginner’s Guide to Degrees in...’ which will give you a taster of what to expect from different university courses. Additionally, regular talks from visiting speakers from universities around the country may help to inform some of your thinking surrounding university applications. The summer term is when you will receive your predicted grades; the Higher Education Evening takes place this term too and outlines the UK university admissions process for your parents. Our Higher Education Day at the very end of the summer term sees you actually embark on your official university applications.

The Department has a dedicated US and International University advisor who provides additional support to all students applying outside the UK for their undergraduate degree. If you think that you might be interested in applying to study in the US, you are invited to an evening event on Monday 11 September which will focus on SAT/ACT tests and how to choose the right US university for you. Please do come along, parents are very welcome too. US university admissions officers begin their visits to the School from September onwards so look out for details of their presentations in the weekly school Bulletin. Our extensive programme of events over the course of the Lower Sixth is designed to help you decide if the US is a good option for you and will provide you with all the information you need to plan for your applications in the Michaelmas Term of your Upper Sixth year.

We hope that this message leaves you reassured about the level of support you will receive for the next stage of your life from our department which is located in Talbot House, right next to the Girls International House Annexe.

Have a fantastic summer holiday and we look forward to seeing you in September.

Very best wishes

Sevenoaks School Pre Season Rugby Training Camp 2017 (Seniors, U16’s, U15’s & U14’s) Monday 21 August to Wednesday 23 August (10.00 – 16.15)

Dear Parent/Guardian,

Your son is invited to attend the Pre-Season Rugby Training Camp taking place on Monday 21 August – Wednesday 23 August 2017, from 10.00 until 16.15. We’ve just recently began working closely with Saracens Rugby Football Club and they will be as-sisting with the delivery of the programme over the three days. The camp has been structured to fit the model of a professional club environment, giving the boys an insight into the experiences of a full time professional.

I would strongly encourage all boys to attend who have the intention of representing the school during the Michaelmas term, although this will not preclude from selection for those that are un-able to attend. Over the 3 days we will have specialist coaching sessions delivered by Saracens and focusses will be upon individual, unit and team skills. We will also work across many different facets of the game, exposing the boys to a whole host of transferable skills from other non-rugby related activities. Students will also work closely with our full-time Strength and Conditioning Coach, carrying out testing to help devise a training programme suited to the individual’s needs. Education workshops will also provide a learning experience for all involved, giving greater un-derstanding of topics such as Nutrition and Video Analysis. This will all help to provide the best possible preparation for the coming season, helping to enhance the rugby programme. The cost of the training camp will be £145per person and this will include professional coaching, lunch, leisure facilities during the holidays (e.g. swimming pool, dance studio, sports hall etc.), red CCC Sevenoaks School T-shirt, boot bag, water bottle and end of camp bbq.

If you have any questions concerning the training camp please do not hesitate to contact. You will receive a further letter nearer the time to confirm all arrangements and full itinerary. It would be very much appreciated, if you could please complete all details and return the form before Friday 12 May, giving permission for £145 to be added to the Summer Term bill. I am fully aware of the IB courses that are being run at the same time and after consulting course leaders, they suggested that students should attend the first and last two days of the IB course.

I look forward to seeing as many of your son/s as possible at pre-season training!

Kind Regards,

Jamie Cullen [email protected]
