Leslie BissettA volunteer at Hull Services through the Preadolescent Treatment

Program, Leslie Bissett has a deep understanding of the needs of the children at Hull.

“I have volunteered for PTP at Hull Services for a number of years now and I have been able to see firsthand the need for this program

and the incredible effort the staff carries out every day to support traumatized children from our community,” says Bissett. “These are Calgary’s children and I am grateful to have the opportunity to con-

tribute to an organization that is serving the needs of Calgary’s most at-risk children today and for generations to come.”

Through this involvement Leslie Bissett sought a way to help the organization build a new PTP building which culminated in a very

generous gift of $5 million that will allow construction of a new facility to begin in the spring of 2018.

Fluor GreenhouseHull’s new passive solar greenhouse, which officially opened at the organization’s main campus in 2017, will have its first full season of use coming up in the spring of 2018 with students from William Roper Hull School putting this “living classroom” to very good use.

Working with William Roper Hull School, in partnership with Hull Services, the greenhouse was designed and built entirely on volunteered time. A team of young engineers from Fluor Canada Ltd. created the model in direct consultation with experts from Verge Permaculture, and employed the services of other vendors including Burnco and Plastifab to bring the structure to fruition.

Fluor Canada Manager of Projects, Tasha Sherbanuk said at the official opening of the greenhouse, “Fluor has an everlasting commitment to the communities where we live and work. We view the ability to work in these communities as a privilege and our aim is to leave a positive impact on them at every opportunity. The attention given to this initiative by our young engineers and the organizations we have partnered with, including Hull Services, is a testament to the collective goal of ensuring that our community continues to thrive and is focused on the betterment of everyone living here.”

Oliver FeniakIn 2017 the Mentors Matter initiative at Hull Services had 110 one-to-one and group mentors active in 18 programs at Hull Services.

Oliver Feniak was one of them. Employed as a civil engineer specializing in wastewater projects in partnership with indigenous communities he was looking for a way to make a further contribution to the community. While mentoring a 12-year-old boy he participated in an array of activities including playing basketball and walking their pet dogs.

Commenting on the mentor/mentee experience Feniak said, “I thought I had a lot to offer, I wanted to interact on an interpersonal level.” Adding, “It feels great to be part of a kid’s life.”
