Board of Education Approves Key Construction ResolutionsBy: Walter Davis, SuperintendentProgress continues on the district’s construction project. With the approval of the bond issue last November, voters gave the Board of Education permission to proceed with three projects, including construction of a new PreK-5 facility on the Quick Road campus, construction of a new gymnasium and other renovations at Woodridge High School and replacement of the roof at Woodridge Middle School. high school will be constructed behind the school and a new parking area will be added to accommodate its use. Plans call for the renovation of existing space at the high school to create classrooms, including new facilities for our choral and instrumental music classes and renovated space for our visual arts program. The roofing project at the middle school will be the first component of the project to begin and is planned to begin this summer. Architects are already developing specifications for the project, which will be ready for bid soon. The middle school roof will be fully replaced in time for the start of the next school year. These are exciting days for the Woodridge community. Watch for opportunities for public input and review of the plans over the next several months. Working together, will reshape the face of our school district. One Community. One Campus. Many Minds.

Struttin our Skills!By: Candace Lamp, Third grade teacher

Quinn McCartney from Mrs. Lamp’s third grade classroom woke up on Wednesday with a bit of a problem. He hated wearing the same outfit to school twice in the same month. He had four pairs of jeans and five Bulldog t-shirts and wanted to figure out if he had enough clothes to mix it up each day. But Quinn was in luck! In Math class that very day, Mrs. Lamp was teaching a skill that just might help him out.

She explained that using something called a tree diagram was a simple way to represent a sequence of events and that they were particularly useful in probability since they record all possible outcomes in a clear and uncomplicated way! This got Quinn thinking, could a tree diagram help him to figure out how many different outfits he could create? He asked Mrs. Lamp if the class could practice by using his scenario. And that is just what they did. Only it didn’t turn out quite as Quinn had planned. You see, Mrs. Lamp forgot whose wardrobe she was creating and designed lovely gowns and hair bows to represent Quinn’s clothing. Acting as models, Quinn, Nolan Larkin, De’Lamon Marshall and Mason Bragg were great sports and tried on all the different combinations as the classroom set to work making an oh so stylish tree diagram. They started with the four different colored gowns: melon, lemon, emerald and lilac. Each boy wore one of the dresses and then tried on each of the 5 hairbows: polka-dots, hearts, stars, smiley faces and bumble bees. They then discussed how the diagram looked a lot like “groups of ” in multiplication. Could it be this easy? There were 4 groups with 5 in each group so using their fact skills they determined that 4X5=20. Quinn had 20 different outfits! He felt so relieved, not only that he knew how many combinations he could make, but that he didn’t have to wear those awful clothes every day)!

Fourth Grade Geek SquadFourth graders in Mrs. Bartilson’s and Mrs. Voinovich’s classes have become the tech experts of an amazing program. SeeSaw allows students to create safe, online portfolios to showcase their learning, work and accomplishments. The students were so excited about the program, they wanted to share it with other classes, so they became The Geek Squad! To prepare their presentation, they

wrote a class report describing the uses and functions of SeeSaw. Both fourth grade classes practiced using SeeSaw by showcasing their own work and exploring new aspects of the program. When they felt prepared to teach others how to use SeeSaw, they invited Mrs. Backo’s and Mrs. Ferber’s classes in and taught their peers. Students learned how to read and record themselves and add pictures, drawings, captions and notes. Most students agreed their favorite function of SeeSaw is the ability to “like” or comment constructively on the posting of a friend. Finally, everyone was taught to save, edit and delete work. They did such an commendable job teaching their peers, they were invited to be the Geek Squad for Mrs. Hampshire’s fifth grade class and will soon teach Mrs. Chluda’s third graders as well. Students are excited to have an authentic location to publish and showcase the many things they learn each day here at WIS. Their next step is to go home and teach their parents how to access their portfolios! Thank you Geek Squad for sharing your tech savvy with others.

Woodridge Primary School Kindergarteners Enjoy New Projects Thanks to Donors Choose

Miss Pettit’s kindergarten class has been enjoying new learning materials thanks to generous donors. In January, the class received two sets of magna-tiles from a project created by their classroom teacher using the site DonorsChoose.org. This website allows teachers to create a classroom project that will enhance the classroom curriculum and learning. Once a project is launched, people can choose to donate money to help fund the project. The project titled “Exploring Shapes with Magna-Tiles” was funded within 24 hours with donations from generous community members and a matching donation from The Walt Disney Company. The magna-tiles will be used to help improve students’ knowledge and understanding of 2-D and 3-D shapes during the math unit on these shapes. Until then, the students love using the magna-tiles to build towers, 3-D shapes and many other fun creations.

Teachers Discovery Exhibit

How many High Schoolers does it take to put together a tessellation Floor Puzzle? Three! Seniors Romello Lopp, Ziaire Buchanan and Junior Sa’veon Marshall give it a try.

During the week of February 1-5, Woodridge High School Library hosted a Teachers Discovery Exhibit on the contemporary artist M.C. Escher. Escher

is a graphic artist specializing in surreal lithographs and woodcuttings. Escher drew from his imagination and rarely created things you would find in “nature.” The exhibit was a huge hit, with 680 teachers and students from the primary, middle and high schools attending. The library hosted 34 art, math and history classes. The students enjoyed learning more about Escher, viewing his impossible architecture lithographs and wood cuttings, tessellating shapes, working with Mobius Strips as well as putting together the Tessellation Floor Puzzle created by freshman Jon Touma.

Mrs. Nabring’s Pre-Schoolers learn about Escher’s Hand With Reflecting Sphere.
