Dear North Merrick Community,

On behalf of the North Merrick School District and Board of Education, we send our sincere wishes that you and your family are

safe and well during an unprecedented time of crisis. The North Merrick community has demonstrated its strength as neighbors

help one another each day, in every way.

Our teachers and students have become fast and creative learners of Distance Learning, utilizing the instructional technology our

district has been strategically integrating into the classroom during the last few years, including chromebooks, Google Classroom,

Flipgrid, and many other cybernetic applications.

The North Merrick Mental Health and Wellness Coalition, comprised of professionals in the field, faculty, staff, and parents, was

created last fall to provide ongoing support for students and families, and it has been a particularly helpful resource during these

months. Together the District’s Parent University team and Mental Health and Wellness Coalition recently hosted a virtual event

featuring a national expert focused on helping children cope with the coronavirus. Additionally, as virtual events have become the

“new normal,” we are also planning virtual graduations for our sixth graders and kindergarteners, as well as a “Hello to Summer”

virtual classroom breakfast for all students with their teachers on the last day of school.

Looking ahead to next year with hope in our hearts, we can’t wait to be back in our schools with our students, faculty and staff

partaking in all our robust, student-centered programs. For 2020-21, Enrichment for All will be expanded to five district–wide days

from three and the Smart Schools Bond funding will be applied to fortify our technology infrastructure, add additional Smart

boards to classrooms, and support our three-year, one-to-one device plan.

We also eagerly await the return of our signature programs, including the Saturday Winter Language Academy and SCOPE Enrich-

ment, Parent Universities, hands-on science lessons, Theatre Arts, district-wide musical performances, student participation in the

reimagined Learning Edge Labs, WINGS, PTA-sponsored Arts in Education, Math and Movement, STEM and coding, H2O Homework

Help and Other, Mindful Moments, guidance counselor-led social-emotional curriculum and career exploration, virtual and live field

trips, professional development for teachers in the enVision 2020 math program, technology enhancement tools, NYS Science

Learning Standards curriculum mapping, and so much more!

This year, our School Budget Vote and Board of Education Trustee Election is being held exclusively by absentee ballots, which are

being mailed home with return, postage-paid envelopes to all qualified voters. By law, the ballots must be received by the District

Clerk, 1057 Merrick Avenue, North Merrick, by 5 p.m. on June 9, 2020. You should have already received two postcards: the budg-

et notice describing the change to the vote and dates by the Governor’s Executive Order and the annual six-day notice containing

all of the numbers in the proposed budget for the 2020-21 school year. You can also refer to this information on the district web-

site at www.nmerrickschools.org.

As a K-6 school district, North Merrick has a unique opportunity to focus on the young student. Children are always the brightest

hope for the future, and that is so especially true this year.

PROPOSED SCHOOL BUDGET 2020-2021

ON THE BALLOT

PROPOSITION 1—NORTH MERRICK UFSD SCHOOL BUDGET

SHALL, the proposed budget of the North Merrick Union Free School District, Town of Hempstead, North Merrick, New York, in the gross amount of $34,178,656 be adopted as the budget of this District for the 2020-21 school year.

TRUSTEE ELECTION INFORMATION—

Election of two (2) members on the Board of Education, each for a three-year term. Candidates run at large. The two candidates re-ceiving the highest number of votes will commence service on July 1, 2020, expiring on June 30, 2023.

WHAT HAPPENS IF THE BUDGET IS DEFEATED?

Statement of significant assumptions made in projecting a contingency budget for the 2020-21 school year include: The district would be required to reduce the budget by $468,444, which would jeopardize all co-curricular activities and increased class sizes at all grade levels, and elimination of all non-mandated support and pupil personnel services would need to be considered. Under a contin-gent budget, the district would not be allowed to provide for the budgeted Capital Projects, access to community groups without charging a fee, purchase equipment or some consumable student supplies, and non-essential maintenance.
