New BookS “I was genial in the banquet hall, troublesome in combat. I was strong against the powerful, gentle to the feeble.”
So wrote Cormac MacAirt, High King of Ireland (300 A.D.) in The Counsels of Cormac, translated from the old Irish by Thomas Cleary, and recently donated to the library. The great warrior and wise man Cormac wrote this for the powerful men of his time, instructing them how to be good leaders. For instance, he advised them “don’t be one who quarrels with truth” and to be compassionate and kind. It’s no wonder that Cormac’s reign was one of peace, prosperity and justice. His advice is just as meaningful and relevant today as it was 1700 years ago.
Other new books in the library: 1916: The Easter Rising by Tim Pat Coogan Ireland for Beginners by Phil Evans and Eileen Pollock Irish on the Inside: In Search of the Soul of Irish America by Tom Hayden The Story of Kilkenny by Robert Wyse Jackson Memorable Irish Trials by Kenneth E.L. GeNeALoGYAre you searching for information about a family member’s involvement in Ireland’s fight for freedom 1913-1921? The library now has a copy of the index of names of those who gave witness statements to the Bureau of Military History, kindly donated by library volunteer Finbarr O’Driscoll. Established in 1947, the bureau documented over 1700 stories given by members of the Irish Volunteers, Cumann na mBan, the IRB, Sinn Fein, the Irish Citizen Army, the relatives of deceased individuals as well as those not associated with any organizations. The first testimonies were released to the general public in 2003. Visit the library to look up a name in the Index to Contributors and learn how to obtain a copy of their witness statement from the National Archives of Ireland.
SUPPoRT THe LIBRARYNeed a book to read to help you get through the winter months? Celtic Voices pack the House!
The Celtic Voices Choirs, a community outreach program of the Irish Immigration Pastoral Center, packed the St. Patrick’s Room with 500 supporters for their first Christmas concert on December 6th.
The three choirs - Children’s, Youth and Adult -performed a wonderful mix of toe-tappingChristmas favorites, old and new, and there were several debut solists who surprised many there!
Long time UICC member Margaret McAuliffe said “It was fabulous! It is great to see the UICC full of young kids and families - everyone from small babies to those in their 90’s!”
The choirs, director Mary McKeever and the IIPC aregrateful to the UICC Board of Directors for donating the Room and look forward to several moreperformances in the New Year!
For more information about the choirs, please call the IIPC at 415.752.6006.
