Revised: June 2010 BOARD OF REGENTS BRIEFING PAPER Meeting Date: June 16-17, 2011 1. Agenda Item Title: Hire Above Salary Schedule – UNLV Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach Stacey Augmon 2. BACKGROUND & POLICY CONTEXT OF ISSUE: This is a new employment agreement for Stacey Augmon to serve as an Assistant Head Coach for the UNLV men’s basketball program. The annual base salary is set at $212,000, which is above the maximum ($119,332) for the applicable range, 4, of the current administrative/professional staff salary schedule. 3. SPECIFIC ACTIONS BEING RECOMMENDED OR REQUESTED: Approval is requested to hire Coach Augmon at a base salary above the salary range. The proposed annual employment document contains non-standard terms, including provisions for (1) personal use of an automobile or a car allowance, (2) non-cumulative personal and administrative leave in lieu of accrued annual leave, (3) a bonus of one month’s salary for NCAA tournament qualification, (4) suspension with pay in UNLV’s discretion in the case of charged misconduct, and (5) early termination at any time by UNLV, without prior notice, upon payment of two month’s salary. 4. IMPETUS (WHY NOW?): The previous head coach resigned, along with his staff, and so the new head coach requires a full complement of new staff. 5. BULLET POINTS TO SUPPORT REQUEST/RECOMMENDATION: Stacey’s qualifications are as follows: Graduated in 1991 as one of the best student-athletes in the history of UNLV. Member of the 1990 UNLV NCAA National Championship team and named a 1991 NCAA First Team Consensus All-American. Ninth overall pick in the 1991 NBA draft, played from 1991-2006 in the NBA and was named to the 1992 NBA All Rookie Team. Coached for the past four seasons with the NBA Denver Nuggets. 6. POTENTIAL ARGUMENTS AGAINST THE REQUEST/RECOMMENDATION Because of the economic climate, hire less experienced and accomplished coach for less cost. 7. ALTERNATIVE(S) TO WHAT IS BEING REQUESTED/RECOMMENDED: Offer a less attractive contract and risk losing Stacey to the NBA. 8. COMPLIANCE WITH BOARD POLICY: X Consistent With Current Board Policy: Title #___2 __ Chapter #__5 __ Section #___5.4.2(a) ___ Amends Current Board Policy: Title #_____ Chapter #_____ Section #_______ Amends Current Procedures & Guidelines Manual: Chapter #_____ Section #_______ Other:________________________________________________________________________ Fiscal Impact: Yes___x No_____ Explain: Combined annual base salaries for three associate/assistant coaches and one director of basketball operations are set to increase by $139,000.
