FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES OF THE INTERNATIONAL RED CROSS AND RED CRESCENT MOVEMENT:

LETTER FROM CEO & BOARD CHAIR: MISSION STATEMENT:

The American Red Cross, a humanitarian organization led by volunteers and guided by its Congressional Charter and the Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross Movement, will provide relief to victims of disaster and help people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies.

Humanity // Impartiality // Neutrality Independence // Volunteer Service // Unity // Universality William F. Andrews

Board ChairJoel R. SullivanChief Executive Officer

This year has been a great testament to our strength as a Chapter. Your Nashville Area Red Cross has worked continuously to be the most prepared and safest region in the nation. That preparation paid significant dividends this past year as we responded to numerous disasters including the worst flood in more than five hundred years. Our immediate andsuccessful response was made possible by our community partners, donors and thousands of volunteers.

The past year has seen our organization respond to large scale disasters like the Haiti earthquake, as well as, our own local disasters like house fires. During the Middle Tennessee floods, we rose to the challenge and provided victims with more than 349,000 meals & snacks, 20,000 clean-up kits, 10,000 comfort kits, in addition to opening 37 shelters across the region.

Our Health and Safety Services trained nearly fifteen thousand people in lifesaving areas such as CPR/AED, First Aid, and Babysitter Training. Our volunteers responded to the needs of the military through our Service to the Armed Forces programs.

We hope you will take a moment and review this Annual Report for the 2010 fiscal year. It is filled with information about the Nashville Area Chapter and the services we provide.Included in this year’s report, you will find a cut–out card, “Tell Your Red Cross Story.” We encourage you to cut out this insert and share our life-changing mission with a friend, family member or co-worker.

It is our mission to provide relief to victims of disasters and help people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies. Through the generous contributions of our donors, the tireless leadership of our Board and staff and the countless dedicated volunteers, we excelled at accomplishing our mission!

We thank our Board members, staff, volunteers and generous community for their continued support of the Nashville Area Red Cross. It is a privilege to serve you and our community and we look forward to continued service in the upcoming year.

Sincerely,

During FY10 your American Red Cross trained 14,912 individuals in lifesaving skills last year, including Adult and Infant/Child CPR/First Aid/AED (Automated External Defibrillator), lifeguarding, swimming lessons and babysitter’s training.

Also this year, the Nashville Area Chapter once again hosted Lifesavers Camp for children ages 10-15. The week-long event works to empower young people to take control when faced with an emergency situation by training them in Adult CPR, Infant/Child CPR/First Aid, Babysitter’s Training and Sport Safety, as well as educating them on Red Cross disaster and blood services.

Imagine watching everything you own go up in flames at 2:00am. Now imagine not having a place to sleep, no clothes, no food, and no hope for tomorrow. The Red Cross is there when help can’t wait.

The Nashville Area Chapter Disaster Action Teams respond toapproximately 300 residential fires in Middle Tennessee each year. Whenthe volunteers arrive, they bring hope for those affected by disasters, even at 2:00 am.

Red Cross volunteers are on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week torespond to fires. The local fire department activates these volunteerswhen they see a need for a family who has just been affected by a fire. The Disaster Action Team organizes water, snacks, toiletry items, andpaperwork and heads to the disaster immediately after it happens. There, the team provides assistance to help the families get back on their feet.

In fiscal year 2010, your Red Cross distributed $209,068 in directfinancial assistance to 1,783 fire victims in Middle Tennessee.

Your Red Cross is providing this financial assistance nearly every day toa family who is devastated. It would not be possible without the generousdonations from our community. DISASTER RELIEFHELP WHEN IT’S NEEDED MOST

Page 6: BOARD MEMBERS SERVICE MAP - American Red · PDF fileOur Health and Safety Services trained nearly fifteen thousand people in lifesaving areas ... Marshall Van Buren Grundy ... Bob

On May 1st, 2010 torrential rains pounded Tennessee, resulting in the worst flooding experienced in decades and devastating lives in communities across our state.

In the days and weeks immediately following the rising waters, the Nashville Area Chapter of the American Red Cross responded by providing emergency shelters, hot meals, clean drinking water, comfort supplies, clean-up kits and emotional support to victims affected by this terrible disaster. Even after the flood waters receded, recovery efforts continued, to ensure that the lives of those affected return to normalcy as quickly as possible. Our quick response was truly a testament to the generous volunteer spirit throughout our community who gave unlimited time and resources when your neighbors needed a hand. Of nearly 2,300 volunteers who donated countless hours to flood relief efforts, 68% came from right here in Middle Tennessee. When the Red Cross requested financial support to provide critical needs assistance, people from across the country answered the call with checks in hand. Thank you for answering the call when your city needed you most.

SERVICE TO ARMED FORCESSERVING OUR NATION

In fiscal year 2010, the Nashville Area Red Crosshelped 5,638 military families in Middle Tennessee.

The Nashville Area Red Cross provides emergency communications between a member of the military serving overseas and his/her family in the event of a birth, death, sickness, or other emergency. The Red Cross can provide financial assistance for military members to return home in the event of an emergency- a cost which is often the unforeseen responsibility of military personnel.

To further help our military personnel and their families, our volunteers teach courses to help them cope with deployment and post-deployment stress. The course, “Get to Know Us Before Your Need Us” outlines the role of the Red Cross military services, and “Psychological First Aid” offers training for the post-deployment period.

DISASTER RESPONSE: Each year, the American Red Cross responds immediately to more than 70,000 disasters, including house or apartment fires (the majority of disaster responses), hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, tornadoes, hazardous materials spills, transportation accidents, explosions, and other natural and manmade disasters.

Red Cross disaster relief focuses on meeting people’s immediate emergency disaster-caused needs. When a disaster threatens or strikes, the Red Cross provides shelter, food, health and mental health services to address basic human needs.

The Red Cross also feeds emergency workers, handles inquiries from concerned family members outside the disaster area, provides blood and blood products to disaster victims, and helps those affected by disaster to access other available resources.

EMERGENCY COMMUNICATIONS SERVICES FOR MILITARY MEMBERS AND THEIR FAMILIES: Using the latest in computer and telecommunications technology, the Red Cross allows military members stationed all over the world to send messages to loved ones back home during an emergency or other important event. These communications are delivered around-the-clock, seven days a week, 365 days a year.

INTERNATIONAL SERVICES: As part of the world’s largest humanitarian network, the American Red Cross alleviates the suffering of victims of war, disaster and other international crises, and works with other Red Cross and Red Crescent societies to improve chronic, life-threatening conditions in developing nations. We reconnect families separated by emergencies and educate the American public about international humanitarian law.

LIFESAVING TRAINING: Every year we train 11 million people in lifesaving skills. American Red Cross first aid, CPR and AED programs are designed to give you the confidence to respond in an emergency situation with skills that can save a life. Additional training in blood borne pathogens, oxygen administration and injury prevention can be added to CPR and first aid training to prepare you to prevent and respond to life-threatening emergencies. In addition, the American Red Cross has been the leader in swimming and lifeguarding since 1914, and we teach preparedness courses to help families and communities prepare for all kinds of emergencies and disasters.

BLOOD/BIOMEDICAL SERVICES: The American Red Cross provides nearly half of the nation’s blood supply (collecting 6.5 million units a year from volunteer donors) to patients in 2,500 hospitals across the country through its national network. Every two seconds, someone in America needs blood. The Red Cross must collect blood donations each and every day to meet the needs of accident victims, cancer patients and children with blood disorders, and the organization works to accomplish this through its 35 Blood Services regions.

SERVING THE COMMUNITY ACROSS THE NATION & AROUND THE WORLD

The American Red Cross, a humanitarian organization led by volunteers and guided by its Congressional Charter and the Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross Movement, will provide relief to victims of disaster and help people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies.
