Board Chair & Director’s MessageWe are driven by our community.

Jim Moulton, Executive Director

Jim Moulton, Executive DirectorIn the pages that follow, you will read stories about some of the people Stagecoach serves. I am proud to know that we make a real difference in their lives and a real difference in the economic, social and environmental health of the region. I am also excited to know we are serving more people today than yesterday and will serve even more tomorrow.

Community transportation is about people like Jai and Mike; Gidget and Steven; Cheryl and Rachel. Community transportation is about you. Whether or not you ride, we all benefit from Stagecoach’s role in building a more vibrant, healthier place to live, work and play. We are driven by our community to make a difference; please invest in your community. Please invest in Stagecoach.

Our Purpose

Stagecoach Transportation Services, Inc. was established in 1976 to create a network of community transportation alternatives that connect the people and places of Orange and Northern Windsor Counties of Vermont. Our purpose is to enhance the economic, social and environmental health of the region by providing safe, reliable, affordable and accessible community transportation services for everyone in the communities we serve.

Paul Kendall, Board ChairIn Fiscal Year 2015, Stagecoach celebrated 39 years of serving the community by marking major accomplishments in its services, fiscal stability, management depth, and community connections. This report highlights many of these achievements, which include providing over 68,000 trips, holding our first Stuff the Bus event to support food shelves, re-imagining and re-engineering our I-91 Corridor routes, and recruiting a new Regional Director. Another highlight was having our Executive Director named as the nation’s Community Transportation Manager of the Year. This honor is truly a reflection of all our committed and caring staff, dedicated volunteers and invested board members, without whom no organization can succeed.

The ChallengesECONOMICWith the average annual cost of owning/operating a car in Vermont rising above $7500, greater pressure has been placed on commuter budgets to ensure access to transportation. According to the U.S. Department of HUD, the average cost of operating a vehicle in our region is higher than average housing costs.

SOCIAL With 25% of our population at risk of being transit-dependent and the rural nature of our state, the potential increases for being stuck at home without access to medical and nutrition support. Transit-dependent members of our community are prone to rural isolation which has significant impact on their well-being.

ENVIRONMENTAL Most of the travel in Vermont takes place in single occupancy vehicles. Riding the bus helps our region produce fewer greenhouse gases, better water quality, and improved health while still enjoying access to jobs, goods and services.

Our Solutions Stagecoach operates two parallel and complementary transportation systems to achieve our goals. The Dial-a-Ride System provides seniors, people with disabilities and many others access to comprehensive transportation alternatives. The Fixed Route System connects passengers to employment and shopping centers.

Stagecoach is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Our funding is, on average, an 80/20 mix of public (state and federal grants) and private money. Stagecoach relies upon the generous support of individuals, businesses, towns and philanthropic organizations to provide the local match required to draw down these grants.

Every $1 donated to Stagecoach unlocks $4 of federal and state money.

Improving Economic HealthMike is driven...“When my car broke down, I knew Stagecoach would be the key to getting me from my home in Bradford to my job in Hanover. Once I began riding the bus I almost instantly felt the savings on my budget. I used the money that I saved by riding the bus to buy a new car. In addition to helping me save for a car, riding the bus gives me leisure time that I cherish. Rather than worrying about the driving weather, fighting traffic, or searching for parking I now spend my commute time reading for pleasure.”

“I am driven to SAVE MONEY and I am driven by Stagecoach.”

When taking into account all the costs of driving, including fuel, oil, depreciation, routine maintenance and repair, insurance, licensing,

registration, and taxes, it costs an average of $34.50 per day for a 60 mile round trip commute. Even after

paying fares, riding the bus to work every day, Mike saves more than $7,000 a year!

Page 5: Board Chair & Director’s Message · holding our first Stuff the Bus event to support food shelves, re-imagining and re-engineering our I-91 Corridor routes, and recruiting a new

Cheryl is driven...“Seven years ago I was diagnosed with a seizure disorder and suddenly I could no longer drive myself. My greatest fear was that I would lose my job. Stagecoach has safely and reliably driven me to and from work every day since. I spend time on the bus knitting items that I sell or auction to support the Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth. Stagecoach has made a difference in my life and it has given me time to make a difference in the lives of others.”

“I am driven to MAKE A DIFFERENCE and I am driven by Stagecoach.”

37,000 rides to and from work every year!

Jai is driven...“I was born with cerebral palsy and I’ll have it until I’m old and gray. This means that I will never drive. Before I found Stagecoach I felt isolated at home. Now Stagecoach Drivers pick me up at home and take me to town where I work out, have doctor’s appointments, and socialize with my friends. Stagecoach gives me independence and freedom.”

Steven is driven...“My first driving job was hauling hay on my family farm when I was 8 years old. Later, I served my country as a transportation specialist in Vietnam. I spent the rest of my career as a commercial truck driver. Nothing brings me more joy than being with friends and meeting new people. Driving brought me happiness because I got to make new friends on the road. I can no longer drive myself so Stagecoach picks me up at home and takes me to the VA Hospital and to senior meals centers where I eat and socialize with friends.”

Gidget is driven...“I ride the bus for a lot of reasons, but the most important reason of all is my desire to leave a legacy of a healthier planet. Riding the Stagecoach bus is a simple way to help me reduce my carbon footprint. One less single occupancy car on the road is my contribution to clean Vermont air. An added bonus is that I get two quick walks in on my way to and from the bus stop.”

“I am driven to LEAVE A LEGACY and I am driven by Stagecoach.”

Rachel is driven...“I feel a major responsibility to reduce my personal consumption of our earth’s precious resources. Riding the bus helps me make a more earth-friendly commute which increases the likelihood of a brighter environmental future. An extra perk for me is that riding the bus is very economical and convenient. The money I’ve saved over the last year helped me put a down payment on my first home, which is located within walking distance of the bus line. For me, riding the bus just makes sense.”

How Can Stagecoach... DIAL-A-RIDE

Our Dial-A-Ride System includes programs that focus on elders, persons with disabilities, and low-income families and individuals. These services enhance our ability to provide comprehensive transportation alternatives for all residents in our service area.

Depending on eligibility, Dial-A-Ride may be free or subsidized. Rides are typically provided by volunteer drivers or our lift equipped, accessible buses when necessary.

8 STSI 2015 Annual Report for Fiscal Year 7/1/14-6/30/15

Ticket to Ride This program provides door-to-door transportation to a variety of destinations including grocery stores, medical appointments, work, errands, and social events. Stagecoach helps pay for 80% of the cost of trips for riders over the age of 60 and those with disabilities when there is no other transportation available in the household.

Senior Meal Program This program provides transportation for senior citizens from their homes to meal sites in Randolph, Bethel, Chelsea, Rochester, Royalton, Hancock, and Bradford. These trips are usually coordinated by the senior center. Please call your local senior center for details. Non-emergency Medical Transportation This program provides free transportation for Medicaid-eligible residents who need access to medical appointments. This is a free service for all Medicaid-eligible residents of Barnard, Bethel, Bridgewater, Hartford, Hartland, Norwich, Pomfret, Rochester, Royalton, Sharon, Stockbridge, and Woodstock, who do not have access to a vehicle and need a medical transport.

“Chelsea at the office worked so hard for me today!!

I called several times but she never got frustrated with my questions. She even offered to place calls

for me so that I didn’t have to do it all by myself.

Thank you!!!”Dial-a-Ride Passenger
