    GOLF

Dear GolfersHope you have all had a good weekend and that

BRITISH OPEN MEMBERS ALL DAY COMPETITION – SATURDAY 16 JULY 2016

As you all know this week is the 145th Open Championship to be played at Royal Troon, in Scotland. We have decided to host our very own Briti sh Open Championship Weekend here at MECC, for our Members only!!

Please note that all Visitors are welcome to also play in the normal Club Competi ti on, however they will not be able to be crownedthe MECC Briti sh Open Champion, as this is for MECC Members Only. This will be an Annual Competi ti on which will happen every year during the Briti sh Open Weekend.

This forthcoming Saturday Members Competi ti on is an Individual Stableford Competi ti on and will be an All Day Competi ti on with the overall MECC Member winner from both the Morning and Aft ernoon Competi ti on being crowned the MECC Briti sh Open Champion.

Should a Non MECC Member win the Individual Stableford Competi ti on, they will sti ll be eligible for the normal prize money, however will not be able to be crowned the MECC Open Champion.

The overall winner (MECC Member) from the All Day Saturday Individual Competi ti on must please be available at the aft ernoon Prize givingon Saturday 16 July 2016.

The Club Knockout Draw for the Men’s Single, Pairs and Mixed has been done and Micky will be sending the draws out to all those members who entered. Thank you to all of those who put their names down, and we look forward to seeing who our Champions will be in each competi ti on.

The 5th Hole. Well this has turned out to be a major issue at the club, in that, due to the fact that initi ally the club had requested the Course Architect to design a Par 4 and this new layout was presented to the Members last year by Peter Hean’, however since then the club’s insurers and the Architect have advised us that by having a Par 4 on such a narrow piece of land would be too dangerous, even with Big Nets protecti ng the golf balls from being hit into the road/Spar, especially with the Spar just over the road and also the houses situated along the left side of the fairway would sti ll be in the fi ring line of stray golf balls. The Club’s Insurers, then wrote to the Club informing us that they would not cover the club for any Liability Claims that may arise should the Hole 5 remain as a Par 4.

With this in mind, the Board and Golf Committ ee, asked the Course Architect to re-think this through again, and it was proposed that a Signature Par 3 be built with an island green, similar to the 17th hole at TPC Sawgrass in America, which every golfer is familiar with.

WEEKLY MEMBERS / VISITORS CLUB COMPETITIONS:

    THURSDAY: 14 July 2016Course: TWO (2)

Club Competi ti on Format: Individual Stableford

    Shotgun Start - Midday

    SATURDAY: 16 JULY 2016Course: ONE (1)

Club Competi ti on Format: Combined Stableford LEAGUE 2016:Nothing to Report

The new proposed design has been on display in the foyer of the club for about 6 weeks, and the Club is now about to give the go ahead to the contractor to start moving the soil as they need at least 3 weeks to assemble their plant and machinery, etc and we are hoping that by September/October this year they can start planti ng the grass on the Tee Boxes/Green. Hopefully we will have more rain this year going into summer and by December/January the hole will become playable.

There have been a few concerns by some members on the design of Hole 5, so the Club has requested the course architect to look at an alternati ve which will be presented to the Members in due course.

A further update on Hole 5 will follow ……..

    WHAT’S IN THE NEWS?

  • DRIVING RANGECongratulati ons to Brandon Stone on his 5th place fi nish in last week’s French Open, not only did this mean another big cheque but it also qualifi ed him to play in this year’s Open Championship. There was also the impressive win of Dusti n Johnston at the WGC event at Firestone CC, this makes it two wins in a row and takes him to number two in the world rankings. I see the fallout of top players from the Olympics conti nues, but our own Jaco van Zyl is standing fi rm to his commitment to play. This week he announced that he will forego playing in both the Open and PGA championship in order to get his game right for the Olympics, defi nitely a diff erent view than most of the top players are taking! This year’s Open Championship is at Royal Troon on the Ayrshire coast of Scotland and about 45 min from where I grew up and not far from Trump Turnberry.

The man himself visited recently and was apparently met by a Mexican Mariachi band called...” Juan Directi on” who brought with them a wheel barrow full of bricks. I wonder if he got the message! Have you made a decision on which part of your game you want to improve over the next 45 or 90 days?If you’re willing to invest in a record summer, then pick your swing fundamentals as your main project. Most golfers struggle to swing on plane with a good swing path and that spoils so many of their golf shots. With a litt le focus, eff ort and practi ce it’s possible to make small changes that will improve your accuracy, enormously increase your consistency, and add a lot of metres along the way.

Come on. Start your journey to bett er golf and more enjoyment.

Enjoy the weekend and get ready for one of my favourite ti mes of the year, The Open Championship week!Happy golfi ng!

  • Hi Leanne

I just wanted to say thank you so much for all your assistance in organising both these functi ons. They both went off so smoothly and we had many compliments about both the venue and the food. Your staff were absolutely great and did their best to assist us with everything, nothing was too much trouble, and we hope you will have us back again next year.

As soon as I have dates I will be contacti ng you but it should be a similar ti me of year but will make sure I give you plenty of noti ce.

    With best wishesROSEMARY

Good eveningI would like to commend a very nice staff member, Demetri Liversage on his outstanding customer service. He has gone beyond any expectati ons and assisted me in getti ng my son’s watch back from a golf cart we had hired. He also helped my son pick out golf clubs and set them up for him. He also helped me courier a wedge that my other son desperately wanted. I am very grateful for all of his assistance. Thank you for hiring such a nice individual. Best regardsJane Hasti ngs

    POSITIVE FEEDBACK

  • WHAT’S IN THE NEWS?

TENNISMount Edgecombe Tennis Club has had excellent League results in recent years but there are also some individual performances which we are proud of.

    1. Jean Hubert and his mother Jackie Zylstra are both high-fl iers in their age groups, not only in South Africa but also worldwide.

In Bloemfontein earlier this year, Jackie won the Over 75 Ladies Singles while Jean was a Triple Champion, winning the Singles for the fourth year in a row as well as the Men’s and Mixed Doubles in the Over 65 Age Group.

Recently Jean lost in the fi nal of the Briti sh Clay Court Championships in Bournemouth and reached the semi-fi nal of the European Clay Court Championships in Baden-Baden, Germany. An amazing achievement!

Both Jackie and Jean are ranked in the world top 20 in their respecti ve age groups on the ITF Rankings and will represent South Africa in the World Super Seniors in Croati a in October.

Jean leaves this week for Germany where he will be parti cipati ng in a German League as well as a tournament.

    Good luck Jean !

    2. Another of our Veteran members collecti ng accolades is our very own Chris Taylor who won the Men’s Interpro 70+ age group again, this ti me in Nelspruit. Chris partnered a friend from Margate, Gules Salott olo and have also won the KZN Open together for the past two years.

    3. Peter Almond also represented KZN in Nelspruit, playing in the 70+ Mixed Team.

    4. Our Super League Captain Steve Eckstein recently competed in the Mother City in the Cape Town Open Seniors Tournament. Steve was unseeded in the over 30’s age group but was able to go all the way and win the event. He then went on to partner fellow Mount Edgecombe team mate Nic McDonald ( who sadly withdrew from the singles at the semi fi nal stage due to an elbow injury ) in the doubles where they lost narrowly in the fi nal in a nail biter three sett er.

    5. Daniel Watson (Junior) competed in two U12 tournaments in the June /July Holidays. The fi rst event was the Coca Cola Gold division which he won. He encountered a few tough matches along the way but managed to pull through each ti me. The following week he entered the Super 7 tournament which is a bigger event which att racts kids from all over the country. Daniel again won the Gold Secti on which means he went unbeaten in two tournaments. What makes Daniels achievements even more remarkable is that he is relati vely new to competi ti ve tennis. Great start to your career, Dan. Your dedicati on and hard work is paying off . Keep it up!

Jean and Jackie (1) Daniel Watson (5)
