2012 has arrived with lots of exciting things in store for our congregation.
However, before moving forward into this year, I want to take the time to thank "Our
Wedding" planners and producers: Alan, Marcia, Brenda and Deborah. Y'all gave
B'nai Zion a wonderful night to remember. Our cast was superb and the food too.
(Thanks, Irv!) Robin, your decorations were right on point. All of us in attendance
loved all of it. A reminder: This was a fundraiser for our Congregation, and if you
were unable to attend, "wedding presents" are still appreciated.
It is also time to hand a round of applause to our Men's Club for again making
our wonderful latkes for our Chinese Chanukah.
Now as we look ahead, our Search Committee has the challenge of seeking a new
Rabbi and spiritual leader. As the search progresses, we are going to need all of your
support and help for it to be successful. Our committee is being steered by Michael
Dzik with the support of Michael Hanan, Helen Pregulman, Rachel Privett, Sande
Schulman, Al Jarman, Dr. Norman Galen, Vicki Cathcart, Rachel Sadowitz, Dr.
Reuben Dubrow, Julie Cowan, Gene Boulware and Howard Gropper.
If at any time you have questions--not just about our Search--but other Synagogue
questions as well, please call me at 902-5134. Of course, whenever you feel that
special need to volunteer, boy, can we use you! Call us.
How about making one of your New Year's Resolutions be To become more active
in B'nai Zion?
Happy New Year!

Sam Balser to Become
a Bar Mitzvah
January 7, 2012 at 9:30 a.m
Samuel Phillip Balser will be called to the Torah as
a Bar Mitzvah on January 7, 2012. Sam is the son of
Drs. Robin and Jeff Balser. He follows in the footsteps
of his brothers, Seth and Jake, who also became Bar
Mitzvah at B'nai Zion. Sam looks forward to
celebrating this milestone with family and friends,
including his grandparents Renee and Bob Schwartz of
Macon, GA and Claire and Arnold Balser of Atlanta,
GA.
Sam is a seventh grader at McCallie School where
he enjoys playing football, basketball and baseball and
hanging out with his friends. He is a member of
Kadima, our middle school youth group. Sam is
excited about receiving his fifth year camper t-shirt at
Camp Ramah Darom this summer.
It was hard to tell who was more determined to have this wedding -- the parents or the shadchan.
Al Jarman, Announcer & Joel Susman, Narrator
Flowers for the director, Brenda Hodges Binder.

When strangers come into the synagogue to browse in our gift shop, I enjoying
guessing if they are Jewish or Gentile. (This generally amounts to Jewish or Christian
since we are in the "Bible Belt.")
Quite often this can be inferred by what they want to purchase. In my twelve
years as an occasional store clerk, I have noticed that both Jewish and Christian
shoppers purchase tallits, but there is an interesting difference in their specifications.
The Christian shopper will often request a prayer shawl that has a blue thread among
its tzitzit fringes. I have yet to receive this request from a Jewish shopper.
The request for the blue thread is solemnly backed up with a quote from
Numbers 15:38, "Speak unto the children of Israel, and bid them that they make them
throughout their generations fringes in the corners of their garments, and that they put with the
fringe of each corner a thread of blue."
Rarely do we have a tallit in stock that has a thread of blue, a fact which is
received by the shopper with consternation. Occasionally, someone has the courage
to ask why our tallits lack a thread that was commanded by God Himself, so it has
fallen to me to discover the answer. The first time I heard the explanation, I admit
that I thought I was being told one of those stories that are told to credulous
newcomers. I can only imagine what the shoppers think when I repeat it, especially
since my version sounds a little like Dr. Seuss:
"Once upon a time (but nevermore) there lived a snail whose name and type we have
forgotten. From this snail was extracted in the days of Moses -- and for thousands of years
thereafter (we think) -- a certain blue dye. It was from this dye that the thread on the tallit
received its commanded blue."
At this point, the shopper's eyes are starting to cross.
"This snail (which some say was always rare) finally gave up on the world completely and
became extinct. It took with it into extinction the substance that made the dye as well as all
memory of the correct shade of blue."
This is the cue for the shopper to remind me that scripture specifies hue, which
is blue, and no mention is made of shade.
"But in Jewish tradition the shade is as important as the hue, and without knowing the
shade, it matters not if we have the blue.
This dilemma is solved by leaving all the threads white."
The logic of this solution is completely lost upon the Christian shopper, and
even I who think out of the box, have come around to it slowly. I think that the key
to understanding the reasoning is the same key to understanding the basic differences
of Jewish and Christian thinking.
Religious Jewish thought has continued to evolve since the days of Moses, to be
built upon and to change with the times. Jewish thinkers moved past the original
command to have a blue thread on the tallit, and evolved into the thought that shade
was as important as hue; and from that they have come, through the extinction of the
snail, to the white thread. But Christians who take their Bible as the original and
only source of spiritual truth always come back to the blue.
37 And the LORD spoke
unto Moses, saying:
38 'Speak unto the children
of Israel, and bid them that
they make them throughout
their generations fringes in the
corners of their garments, and
that they put with the fringe of
each corner a thread of blue.
39 And it shall be unto you
for a fringe, that ye may look
upon it, and remember all the
commandments of the LORD,
and do them; and that ye go
not about after your own heart
and your own eyes, after
which ye use to go astray;
40 that ye may remember and
do all My commandments,
and be holy unto your God.
41 I am the LORD your God,
who brought you out of the
land of Egypt, to be your God:
I am the LORD your God.' {P}

A Time for Everyone When we first started to teach Jordan the
Shema, there was this wonderful book, Goodnight Shema, that we would read to him every night. There is a whole poem leading up to the Shema that talks about lying down, closing your eyes and preparing for sleep. After a few months, Jordan could recite the whole poem and the Shema by heart. It was a wonderful moment for Vicki and me, both as parents and educators; to see our child learning his first bit of Torah. I like to help children find their love for
Judaism. It’s one of the main reasons I am a Jewish educator. This month, on January 20th we’ll hold our second Preschool Shabbat service at 5:15 pm. There will be singing, dancing and stories. If you know a preschool family who might enjoy the opportunity to share a Shabbat experience designed just for their little ones, please let them know about this wonderful opportunity. I look forward to seeing my preschool aged friends on January 20! Kol Tuv, Jason Cathcart Director of Congregational Learning
Join Jason Cathcart for an informal, interactive Shabbat service for families with children age birth to 5. We’ll learn Shabbat songs and prayers, hear stories and begin our Shabbat together. After the service, we’ll conclude with an age-appropriate snack.

Thank you for showing my class and I your synagogue.
I enjoyed seeing all of the amazing art and the wonderful sanctuary. I learned about how they have walls that show all the Jewish
People that have die, and if they light up that means that is there
celebration day.
The most interesting thing I learned is the The most interesting thing I learned is the The most interesting thing I learned is the The most interesting thing I learned is the eternal light.eternal light.eternal light.eternal light. Thank you for letting us ask questions, and telling us the answers.
One of the things I learned was that Samuel was the 1st one in the Torah to tell us about afterlife. The coolest thing I learned is how you don't get baptised in the
Jewish Faith.
I like how you explained the lesson through storys. I learned that the Jewish months are different then normal
months.
I love the architecture of the synagogue!
I learned that in the Jewish faith you don't need to be baptized.
You taught me the major differences
about Juddism & Christianity. I learned that all religious are different.
I thought it was very interesting to learn that Jews are not concerned with afterlife like Catholics are. Thank you for explaining the difference of Jews
and Christians.
I really like the wooden art in the main part. My favorite part of the tour was when you took us
to the room by the maintenance and told us some
stories.
At beginning, I didn't much know about Jew, but know I know! I didn't know that the Torah
didn't have vowels and puncation.
I just wish you blew the rams horn. I appreciate you having us.
I hope to come again soon.I hope to come again soon.I hope to come again soon.I hope to come again soon.
