The following is taken from remarks made by Rabbi Prosnit at the Annual Meeting on June 24.

It has been a year filled with numerous challenges for those of us living in Southern Connecticut. Both Mother Nature and the

worst of human nature took their toll on many in our region. From the ravages of Hurricane Sandy and an unprecedented snowstorm to the horrors of Sandy Hook—even if we were not directly affected, we were reminded of our vulnerability and how hard it is to fully protect ourselves from life’s storms and tragedies.

But such events also reminded us of the importance of neighbors and family—and of communities of faith. Prior to and after the hurricane and snowstorm we made numerous phone calls to our congregants living at the beach or alone to see if any help was needed. And while we couldn’t reach them all, many were pleased to know that their clergy cared.

The power of sacred gatherings was also reinforced for families coping with harsh times. On the Sabbath after the hurricane we had a potluck Shabbat dinner, as congregants with power provided a meal for those who were still without. On the Friday night only hours after the events in Newtown, I was away and Rabbi Schultz led a Shabbat Hanukah Service that by all accounts comforted the shaken without overwhelming the children whose families were still in the protective mode of silence.

In the days to follow we turned to both prayer and action. Your rabbis participated in numerous interfaith services and vigils, and many of us, inspired by the organizing abilities of our congregant Nancy Lefkowitz, advocated for some real change in our state’s gun laws, culminating in a B’nai Israel bus trip to Hartford and the subsequent passage of perhaps the most commonsense gun laws in the country.

So while the peak moments of last year may in fact be events we’d like to forget, I think we can be proud of the role B’nai Israel played for those wanting to know that their synagogue was there for them in the aftermath of hard times.

In his book Tomorrow’s Synagogue Today, Rabbi Hayim Herring addresses some significant challenges facing synagogues and congregational rabbis. Some of these include:

• the unprecedented accessibility of Jewish learning online and in digital formats, often for free

• “freelance” or Chabad-type rabbis who respond to specific life cycle needs without concern for any type of synagogue membership

• Jews ages 18–35 who are marrying later, affiliating less, and questioning the current model of most synagogues

While each of these issues is something real and should be ignored with peril, they have in common the view that “as a Jew my individual needs are paramount and communal identity does little to inform or bring meaning or value to my life.” That view of course is something that the trials of the past year have helped prove deficient. We are a faith hopelessly communitarian by nature, and for that faith to be truest we need to be part of the minyan—one made up hopefully of more than 10, and made up of a laity and professional staff committed to a sacred yet innovative spirit, interdependent and collaborative. I do hope the upcoming year is one when we can be blessed by sacred community, but spared some of the drama that all too frequently accompanies sacred living. Rabbi James Prosnit

Welcome to Our Shinshinim (Young Emissaries)!

Meet Ya’ara Avraham

Hello! My name is Ya’ara Avraham. I am 17 years old and I live in a moshav, a small agricultural community, in the north of Israel. I have two siblings: an older sister named Reut and a younger brother named Boaz. My dad is Yoni and my mom is Tal.

I like singing, playing guitar and bass guitar, running, cooking, and reading. I also like dogs—I volunteered in a dog shelter for five years.

I am a guide in a youth movement called B’nei HaMoshavim. This is my 4th year as a guide, and this year I guided fourth graders.

I really like traveling in Israel and also all over the world. I’ve already been to France, Italy, Germany, Turkey, and the United States. This summer I’m going to travel to Crete in Greece with my friends. I also took a part in a delegation of my school to Poland. We visited concentration camps and sites that were once a main part of the Jewish community in Poland and were destroyed.

I just graduated from high school! I finally finished all my final exams. My majors were computer science, chemistry, agriculture, English, and math. I also had a great graduation party!

Now, as this chapter of my life is over, I am excited to open a new one with you. Omer and I are already counting the days until we get to Fairfield and meet everyone!!

See you soon, Ya’ara

Meet Omer Mashiach

Hello! My name is Omer Mashiach. I’m 17 years old and I live in Rishon-Le-Zion, a big city close to Tel Aviv. I have three siblings: my sister Shachar is 22 and she serves in the army, my brother Roi is 12, and the youngest brother Itai is 7. My mom is Dafi and my dad is Shlomi.

I have been in the Israeli Scouts for six years, and I have guided for almost three years. Last summer I took part in an Israeli Scouts delegation where I came to Windsor, CT, for three months to be the Israel specialist at Camp Shalom.

I like to dance and travel. I was on a trip for eight days that began in the north of Israel, at Hermon Mountain, and ended in the South of Israel, in Eilat. During the trip we visited different places in the country: Jerusalem, Masada, the Dead Sea, Ramat HaGolan, and even water parks! I was also in many countries around the world: England, Ireland, France, and the United States. Last year I was with my school on a journey to Poland, where we visited concentration camps.

I just graduated from high school—my majors were math, English, chemistry, and Arabic.

Ya’ara and I are very excited and looking forward to the coming year! We can’t wait to meet everyone!

See you all soon, Omer

The month of August has arrived: that time when we sit between the final weeks of summer and the start of the new academic year. In Jewish time, much of August corresponds with the Hebrew month of Elul, which begins on August 6. The start of Elul is our reminder that the High Holy Days are just one month away,

and this time of year is our cue to shift our mindset into t’shuvah mode. Jewish tradition teaches, in fact, that while t’shuvah is good at all times, the month of Elul is choicest for t’shuvah (Hayye Adam).

What exactly is t’shuvah? Many translate t’shuvah to mean “repentance,” but it may be more accurately translated to mean “to turn.” The next questions would be “Turn to what? Or to whom? Or where?” These have always been difficult questions. The answer, however, may be in looking at Elul not only as a word, but also as an acronym: E.L.U.L. In his book Days of Awe, Israeli author S.Y. Agnon explains that the Hebrew of the word Elul can be read metaphorically as the acronym Ani Le-dodi Ve-dodi Li, which means “I am my beloved and my beloved is mine (Cant. 6:3).” Taking each of those phrases separately may provide us with a four-part framework to engage in the process of t’shuvah throughout the month of Elul.

Ani- I. T’shuvah begins with the self, so we are thus encouraged to take a little more time for ourselves (which I know is not always so easy!). Jewish tradition encourages us to reflect on our deeds of the past year during Elul and also to be even more aware of our actions during this particular month. I also try to take some extra time for myself to read a book on the topic of the High Holy Days (OK, I know I am a rabbi but you can do it too!) as a way of personally connecting with this period of the Jewish calendar.

Le-Dodi—My beloved. We go from self to those we love. Tell those people you love them a little more. Spend a little more time together. Make amends for any wrongdoings in the past year. Do an activity with them that you haven’t gotten to do yet this summer.

V-Dodi—And my beloved. I want to focus more on the “and” piece of this phrase. These are all the other people in our lives, from our coworkers to the checkout person at the grocery store. During Elul we are encouraged to think more consciously about our relationships with them as well. How do we treat them? Can we be a better version of ourselves when we engage with those many people we interact with during the week? How do they see us? The “And” is an importance piece of our Elul reflection.

Li—Mine. This is where the turning of t’shuvah truly takes place. We begin with ourselves and we return to ourselves. As the month of Elul ends and we enter into Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, the hope is that we are now in the right place to personally enter into this space of prayer, music, and God. While much of the High Holy Days is about the “we,” the time is right for us to affirm who we have been and want to be in this world.

I hope that you will find this little road map helpful in navigating the month of Elul and engaging in the process of t’shuvah in the coming month. And don’t forget to enjoy the end of summer!

From the Early Childhood Center

Summer Fun!

Hot, hot, hot! That is how I will describe the summer here at B’nai Israel’s Early Childhood Education Center. We had more than 50 children in our camp this year. While the days were hot, the fun was

too. We had a special hot dog cookout at the end of each two-week session, complete with turkey hot dogs, chips, fruit, and ice cream or popsicles. We splashed in the sprinkler each day and “fished” in our water tables and turtle pool. We even went out

in the rain! We figured we already had our bathing suits on, so we might as well experience nature’s sprinkler.

The pre-K and 4-year-old group ventured out on three field trips. We even took a yellow school bus to one of them. We visited the splash pad at Indian Ledge Park in Trumbull, the Beardsley Zoo, and the Fairfield School of Music.

It has been a great summer, and we are excited to welcome new friends in September as we begin a new school year with our new extended hours.

7Meet our Shinshinim! Find out a little about them on p. 4.

From the Education Center

This past June I was fortunate to spend two days with the Matan Institute for Synagogue Educators (matankids.org). Matan—which means “gift” in Hebrew—focuses on educating about and advocating for the Jewish needs of all learners. They are committed to exposing all children to the “wonder” of Jewish life and fostering literate

and engaged Jews through creative and multi-sensory approaches.

I attended because B’nai Israel and I have shared an 18-year commitment to make sure that we do everything we can to reach all of our learners. I attended because we do a pretty good job. I attended because we can do a great deal more than we have so far. I believe we must do more, not because every child learns differently—and they do. I believe we must do more not because every child deserves to have the most effective Jewish education we can give them—and they do. I believe we must do more because the Torah teaches that every one of us was created in the image of God—b’tzelem Elohim. And treating each learner as we believe God wants us to be treated is how Jews roll. It is basic to our beliefs.

So at this conference I met a man named Jonathan Mooney. He was once labeled “severely learning disabled.” Now he journeys across America to find others who have used humor, imagination, and resiliency to create satisfying lives beyond “normal.” His story is amazing, and you can find it at jonathanmooney.com. He taught us three essential pillars of education:

1. All young children need to keep moving! Society and schools have long defined good behavior as the ability to sit quietly with your hands folded. I have found that a challenge for more than 50 years! Rather than trying to squeeze kids into a box, we need to acknowledge their need to move. Certainly we need to have times of paying attention—especially to one another. But we are going to teach the Hebrew word la-kum (to stand) by getting the kids out of their seats! And that is just the beginning.

2. We need a broader definition of intelligence. Smart has to mean more things than the ability to learn and spit out facts. Howard Gardner has led a movement in education to explore multiple intelligences—the idea that there are many ways in which we best learn and encounter our world. When we read about

the four children in the Pesach Haggadah, we are learning that we need to tell the story of the Exodus differently to each child, in the manner in which they each best learn. We need to ask a different question. Not “How smart is this kid?” but “How is this kid smart?”

3. Learning happens best when motivation is intrinsic, not extrinsic. In other words, kids learn more when they want to learn something than when someone offers a carrot or a stick. Alfie Kohn, in Punished by Rewards, makes the case that gold stars, awards, and merit badges actually get in the way of accomplishment. The focus becomes the earning rather than the learning. So how do we motivate our kids to care about Hebrew and holy days, Torah and temple, Jewish identity and the Jewish state? It’s complicated. We are working on it. But I do know that we cannot do it without you.

Our teachers and I will be spending some time exploring these pillars and their implications, and we are excited to put some of these principles into place. We invite you to join us. Please share your thoughts on the topic at moreibnaiisrael.blogspot.com/, a blog site where our teachers will be able to access resources and share their own wisdom with another. And if you think you might like to take it a step further and become a substitute teacher, let me know at 203-335-0745 or [email protected].

Build Your Own Sukkah! The Ultimate Jewish Arts and Crafts Project!

Building a sukkah is an easy and fun mitzvah! And with Sukkot falling on September 18 this year, dining and spending a night or two in your own sukkah is the ultimate Jewish family campout! Many members of B’nai Israel build sukkot each year, and we want to help you to build one too!

Contact Ira Wise at 203-335-0745 or [email protected] by Tuesday, September 3 to place your order! You can pick up a box containing the instructions and hardware for your sukkah in early September. The lumber will be delivered to your home. And on Sunday, September 15, members of our Sukkah Squad will come to your home (by appointment) to help you build your sukkah! You will need to take care of decorations and s’chach (the natural covering—we recommend corn stalks, easily purchased at places like Silverman’s Farm in Easton).

The cost of a small 8’ x 8’ sukkah, delivered, is $350.00. That is not a small amount of money, but it will last for years! If you would like to just get the hardware kit and get the lumber yourself, that is also an option! The hardware kit is $65.00, and we’ll give you the lumber list! Other dimensions are also available. Just talk to Ira!

Order your Lulav and Etrog!

If you would like your own lulav and etrog, we are delighted to get them for you. They will be available for pickup at B’nai Israel on Tuesday, September 17. (Please call before coming in, as they will be delivered that day!)

The basic set is $33.00 and includes the etrog and the six branches that make up the lulav (one palm, two myrtle, and three willow).

Please bring or mail your check made out to Congregation B’nai Israel to the office no later than Wednesday, September 4, by close of business. Call Ira at 203-335-0745 if you have questions.

Sukkah Squad Assemble! We are looking for people with basic building skills to help congregants build their sukkot! All building will take place on Sunday, September 15. Timing will be based on your availability and that of the family you will be helping! Training ahead of time is available. Please contact Ira at 203-335-0745 by Thursday, September 11 (earlier if you need some training!).

Yom Kippur and The Art of WelcomingSaturday, September 14 at 1:00 p.m.Join Ira Wise for our annual Yom Kippur afternoon adult learning session. T’shuvah (repentance) is all about repairing our relationships—with one another and with God—and atoning for the ways in which we have missed the mark. This year let’s look not just at the year just finished, but also at the one just beginning. As part of our t’shuvah, let’s explore resolving to welcome new relationships.

We will use as our text The Jewels of Elul IX: The Art of Welcoming. It is a booklet filled with short, inspirational insights from some of the most impressive, famous, and under-the-radar names influencing our global community. The group of contributors includes music

legend Quincy Jones, CEO of the Ritz-Carlton Hotels Herve Humler, and activist Anat Hoffman, to name just three.

We will have copies of the booklet available at the session on Yom Kippur, but you can receive each of the articles—one each day in the month of Elul, which begins on August 6—via e-mail. That way you can have a real sense of where we are going before we get there. And it is a great way to welcome the new year! Enter http://bit.ly/YKWelcome into your Web browser and click “enter.” Fill out and submit the form and you will receive the e-mails each day beginning August 6! Questions? News From the Empty Nesters Group

Would you be interested in a taking a Cuba educational and Jewish heritage tour?

The Empty Nesters Group met on June 30 for a potluck dinner to discuss and get ideas on a trip we are planning to Cuba in March 2014. The emphasis of this trip is to explore the Jewish heritage of Cuba, as well as adding a humanitarian mitzvah to a Cuban neighborhood.

While details are still being worked out, we wanted to reach out to our B’nai Israel families and see if anyone would be interested in joining Rabbi Prosnit and Wendy Bloch and about 10 other couples who have already committed to participate. The cost of the tour will be dependent on how many people we get commitments from.

The dates we are looking at are March 23–30. At this late date in planning, we (the tour company) would need your commitment by August 30 in order to book hotels and air travel. If you are interested or would like to discuss further, please contact Sylvia Neigher at [email protected] or Marcia Falk at [email protected] as soon as possible. We’ll be in touch as more information becomes available.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Are you upgrading your iPad?Apple has a small buyback program, but we have another idea! We are eager to begin using iPads in the Religious School. We have lots of uses for them, and you will receive a letter you can use for tax purposes! Some money has been donated to purchase a few of them, but we are well short of a single classroom set. If you are thinking about upgrading (or just don’t use the iPad now that you have a smartphone), please consider donating it to the Religious School. And if you would like to donate the funds for a new iPad (or would like to go in on one with another family) we can do that as well! In either case, please contact Ira Wise at 203-335-0745 or [email protected].
