BMW M3 - Performance, Suspension,Interior and Exterior Upgrades

The VOS Motorsports Project Car was always about pushing the envelope of what’s possible in a street driven M3. When we first started on this 2005 BMW E46 M3 ZCP we decided that we are going to turn his car into a monster, we could not have been more inspired or more motivated to approach the car with new energy and fresh ideas. We decided that the only requirements were that the car had to be making over 600 horsepower and that it must be a track animal whilst at the same time being a reliable street car.

For us, this car would once again be a symbol of how VOS Motorsports has the drive to push the envelope and the ability to time and time again deliver exactly what we promised to our customer . The car represented our endless march toward a constant desire to be the best, to be the fastest and our ability to always deliver far beyond the expectations of ourselves as well as our customers.

Then it was time to work on chassis tuning.....

One of these problems with the E46 M3 is the rear mounting points for the subframe. These have a tendency to rip out from their spots in the sheet metal. This happens because the rear differential transmits the torsional load from the engine through the subframe, then into the chassis. This constant loading and unloading weakens the sheet metal and causes it to fatigue and separate from the chassis. BMW tried to fix this problem in the E46 by placing a cross member on the front two mounting points of the subframe.

This cross member keeps the front mounting points from having problems by placing the bushing and the stud in double-sheer, thus reducing the twisting action on the sheet metal. The unfortunate side effect of this is that the load from the front of the subframe now gets transmitted to the left rear of the subframe. This is where we have seen many failures of the chassis on low mileage street cars and race cars. Keeping the customers requirements for reliability and maximum track performance in mind, we began work on the car's suspension. The car was almost done, the final step in our plan of action was to address the interior. Being that the car is also a street car, we knew that the subtle things are what really make the difference.

Finally, the car was complete. We still have a great deal of tuning, adjustment, and proving ahead of us before anyone can say that Project ///M3 is truly perfectly set, but our first shakedown of the car was extremely encouraging.
