small but mighty diverse collection of BMW's (group

of about 5 cars and 7 people)wound their way through the metropolis of Bargersburg, Indiana to Mallow Run Winery.Others from the Hoosier Chapterjoined us later at the vineyard fora total of about 17 people. There we had some great Indiana wine, amazing Bavarian food, and Jay

Fox and the Bavarian Band which created the mood for some early Octoberfest celebration!

Thanks to all of those who were able to attend. We look forward to next year if we can keep the calendar clear!

6. Remove the two nuts on each coil andpull the coils out. Either mark the coils or lay them out in the installed order. Note theoil on the connector boots of this engine(figure 5 right). They should be completelydry. This is why we are replacing the valvecover gaskets.

7. Release the securing clips and remove the cover from the coil and injector wiringbox (figure 6 right).

8. Gently pull the various harnesses out ofthe cutouts in the wiring box and let themlie in place. (You will need to do this for access to the injector harness plug clips inthe next step.) You do not need to pull outthe coil plug harnesses.

9. The wiring box sits on top of the fuel injector electrical plugs; the injector harness plugs are assembled as part of the box. In order to remove the box, we must unclip theinjector harness plugs and pull the complete box up and off of theinjectors. Locate the wire clips on each of the injector harness plugs, under the wiring box. Use a pick or small screwdriver to pull out(dislocate) one side of the wire clip on each plug housing (figures 7& 8 below). Once all of the clips are dislodged, we can pull the boxup and off of the injectors. Lay the box and wiring over the intakemanifold.

10. Remove the nuts/bolts securing the valve cover. Pull the valvecover up and off. It may be necessary to remove the two bolts holdingthe power steering reservoir and push it aside. You may also have togently insert a pry tool at the gasket, between the valve cover andthe cylinder head, to release the cover (figure 9 above).

11. Remove old gaskets from the valve cover. Thoroughly clean the cylinder head mating surfaces and valve cover gasket surfaces.(This may require scraping.) Using a clean rag, finish cleaning with non-petroleum based cleaner.

12. Apply the new gaskets to the valve cover. ONLY use sealant onthe cam cutout fillers on the gasket. We use Permatex Ultra RubberGasket Sealant and Dressing. (The manuals call for 3-Bond 1209 orequivalent.) While the sealant is curing, remove the spark plugs andeither replace them or clean the oil from them. Insert a clean raginto the spark plug wells (in the cylinder head) and clean out the accumulated oil. Install the spark plugs.

13. Install the valve cover being careful to properly seat the camcutout fillers on the cylinder head cutouts. Once you have the coverseated, feel around the back of the cover and head to verify that thecutout fillers are seated properly. Install the new rubber seals, boltsand nuts. Torque the fasteners in a spiral or criss-cross pattern, tothe value specified in the applicable manual.

14. Finish the installation of all remaining parts. Note that the wireclips on the injector plugs need to be in the dislodged position inorder to fully seat the plugs and the box. Once the plugs and thebox are seated, you can use your pick to re-seat the clips.

You can read more detail about this at blog.bavauto.com/643page 6

(figure 1 above).

3. Remove the left and right trim covers by prying out the twoplugs covering the securing nuts on each cover, and then re-moving the nuts. Pull off the covers (figure 2 above).

4. Remove the positive jumper terminal on the driver sidevalve cover (if installed) and set aside (figure 3 above).

5. Release the securing clips and pull the harness plugs fromthe ignition coils (figure 4 left).

beautiful August day greeted the Hoosier Chapter as we

assembled to display interesting examples of the marque and enjoy

a great car show, the annual Carmel Artomobilia. Ben Younce, once again,

organized our event, and we were given a much more prominent location to

display this year. Who knows, possibly BMW willbe the featured manufacturer next year.

hose of us who have had or still have well worn BMW’s (in years or

miles) may detect the odor of an acridburning smell after a brief period ofrunning the car. For many, the first instinct is to pop the hood, and if youare a seasoned weekend mechanic, you’ll look immediately to see if it is either the valve cover or oil filter hous-ing, two of the more common causes. These gaskets are just a few dollars andcan be delayed as long as they are not

so bad that you are losing large amounts of oil or the spark plugwells are not filling with oil (from valve cover leakage). The valvecover gasket is relatively easy and straight forward. The oil filterhousing takes a bit longer, but is not difficult. If it is either, andyou feel adventurous and are willing to spend a bit of time in ex-change for the satisfaction of being able to fix what is a relativelyminor problem, then read on. This weekend replacing the valvecover gaskets is precisely what my son Patrick is doing with his

newly acquired BMW E39 540i. He’s not a mechanic, but isn’tafraid to tackle projects when armed with good information.

Leaking valve cover gaskets can be more than just a messy inconvenience: a leaking valve cover gasket can cause a vacuum leak, which creates problems with the engine management system. Additionally, oil commonly leaks into the spark plug wells causing deterioration of the spark plugconnector boots and arcing of the ignition spark, which creates ignition miss-fires. (A common cause for a fault code of “random miss-fires” is oil in the spark plug wells.) Replacementof BMW valve cover gaskets can be relatively quick and easyon most models through the ‘80s and into the early ‘90s. Fromthe early ‘90s on, it may require a bit more work.

The obvious clues to a leaking valve cover gasket are signs ofexternal oil leakage or, in the case of the later 6- and 8-cylinderengines, oil in the spark plug wells. On the early 4- and 6-cylin-der engines (those with distributor caps and regular sparkplug ignition wires), you simply remove the nuts securing thevalve cover and lift it off. (You may have to first remove the in-take air filter or a bracket or two.) The later “coil-on-plug” appli-cations (6- and 8-cylinder models from early ‘90s on) requirethat the coils be removed prior to the valve cover removal. Inthis article we’re replacing the valve cover gaskets on a V8(2000 740i). Replacement on the 6-cylinder models is similar, but you have only one valve cover.

1. If there is a positive jumper terminal on one of the valvecovers, disconnect the negative battery cable at the battery.

2. Remove the center engine trim cover. Push down on each ofthe four button heads and pull up on the cover at each corner

s fall colors creep over the trees, and petunias have bloomedtheir last blooms, we are triggeredto prepare for winter. If you are able to park a car inside for the winter, itis a good idea to change the oil and antifreeze, give thecar a good wash, increase tire pressure to prevent flatspotting, crack the windows for air circulation, and don’tforget the trickle charger for the battery. If you don’t havethat option, the fluid changes are still a good idea, andadd to that a fresh coat of wax. Snow tires can be costly, but in my opinion, worth every penny.

beautiful August day greeted the Hoosier Chapter as we

assembled to display interesting examples of the marque and enjoy

a great car show, the annual Carmel Artomobilia. Ben Younce, once again,

organized our event, and we were given a much more prominent location to

display this year. Who knows, possibly BMW willbe the featured manufacturer next year.

small but mighty diverse collection of BMW's (group

of about 5 cars and 7 people)wound their way through the metropolis of Bargersburg, Indiana to Mallow Run Winery.Others from the Hoosier Chapterjoined us later at the vineyard fora total of about 17 people. There we had some great Indiana wine, amazing Bavarian food, and Jay

Fox and the Bavarian Band which created the mood for some early Octoberfest celebration!

Thanks to all of those who were able to attend. We look forward to next year if we can keep the calendar clear!
