BMW Battery info

Taken from the BMW Parts Catalog

Please observe the following without fail the following information on correct battery replacement!

ISTA document RA_61_20_Notes_on_battery_replacement

For further information, see:

Master document, battery ISTA_Document_SI_61_07_02_(875)

To insure correct electrical system functions, it is essential the original battery stored in the vehicle

order (battery size and type)

On vehicles with IBS (intelligent battery sensor) the battery must be registered via the diagnosis system

(ISTA) and thereby logged in to the vehicle electrical system.”

According to BMW “Standard batteries can always be replaced with AGM batteries matching the same

specification. In the case of this procedure, you must, in addition to registering the vehicle via ISTA/P,

carry out a vehicle coding as follows:

Read out battery size and registration in the vehicle system: ISTA->Service functions->Body->Power

supply->Register_battery_replacement-> test plan”

Taken from an online forum

Procedure to register new battery using INPA:

Step 1: select BODY from the left hand pop-up menu

Step 2: select POWER MODULE in the right hand list

Step 3: select ACTIVATE from the next menu

Step 4: Select ACTIVATE2 from the next menu

Step 5: Then select F7 - Register battery replacement. Almost instantly you get the message: "Register

battery replacement Activated properly."

And

hmm doesnt INPA not work with newer Bimmers for Battery Registration? Power Module won't exist.

In that case you open up Toolset 32 (under EDIABAS folder):

1. Open MSD80.prg

2. Look up steuern_batterietausch_registri. (near bottom of job list)

3. Go to Jobs menu

4. Select Run Job

(May alternatively be under MSV70 or MSV80.prg)

Also, and this is important:

THIS IS ONLY FOR REGISTERING AN OEM BATTERY FROM BMW! Alternate replacements will need

additional coding to match voltage etc differences
