Featuring Dr. Arturo Alvarado, Reagan-Fascell Democracy Fellow

With comments by Dr. Cynthia Arnson, Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars

Moderated by Dr. Diego Abente, International Forum for Democratic Studies

Increasing trends of violence and criminality in fledgling Latin American democracies raise serious questions about thequality of democratic institutions and citizenship in the region. Violence, and particularly organized crime, not only limits

opportunities for citizens to exercise civil and political rights, it also erodes these states ability to provide for the ru le of

law. Fundamentally, it undermines these states ability to wield an effective monopoly on use of force, in some cases

resulting in deal-making between elected regimes and paramilitaries, mafias, and gangs. As a result, elected governments

have become more vulnerable to threats and incentives from illegal actors and less responsive to the interests of their

electoral constituencies. Focusing on survival at all costs, the ruling political elites have little incentive to increase military

and police control, resulting in such high levels of societal insecurity that citizens are led to contract private security forces

and broker their own deals with paramilitary and other criminal groups.

Examining the relation between violence and democracy in Mexico, Brazil, and Colombia,

Dr. Arturo Alvarado will explore how democracy in each country has managed to remain resilient despite these states

inability to control criminal uses of force. He will assess the implications of current trends for policymakers approaches to

peacemaking, the rule of law, and democratization. Dr. Cynthia Arnson will provide comments.

    Biographies

Dr. Arturo Alvarado Mendoza is professor in the department of sociology at El Colegio de Mxico. He previously taught at

Universit Sorbonne-Nouvelle Paris III and Brown University. He has been a visiting fellow at the Program on Human

Rights and Justice at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for

Scholars. He is also a founder of Democracia, Derechos Humanos, y Seguridad, an NGO based in Mexico City. An experton the rule of law in Mexico, Dr. Alvarado has held consulting positions with the United Nations Development Programme

and the UN Crime Prevention Unit. He has authored numerous publications, including Towards National Security:

Domestic Security and National Security in Mexico in the 21st Century(2010). During his fellowship, Dr. Alvarado plans to

examine the role of violence in state formation in Latin America. Using Mexico, Brazil, and Colombia as case studies, he

will investigate whether the rise of endemic violence in Latin America is challenging the consolidation of these democratic

    regimes.

Dr. Cynthia Arnson is the director of the Latin America Program at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars.

It is indeed a central aspect of "The American Dream." Look at home-ownership rates of Americans (even with the recentmelt-down) vs. Europeans.

The recommendation of the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform to repeal the mortgage interestdeduction has attracted support across the political spectrum. Yet neither the Commission itself nor most commentators

have stopped to assess the implications of such a major change in the tax laws.

Owning your own home has often been considered a central aspect of "The American Dream." How would repeal of themortgage interest deduction affect homeownership for middle-income American families? What would be the social

implications of repeal? How much tax revenue would repeal actually produce?

To address these important issues, Hudson Institute has invited a leading member of the House Financial Services

Committee, Rep. Rubn Hinojosa, and a panel of distinguished experts who have written and spoken about the mortgage

interest deduction from diverse points of view.

What They Are Saying About Allyson's Work

Ally Currin writes characters that are both real, funny, interesting and

most importantly believable. She has a great knack for comic timingand giving her stories the room to breathe and be unexpected journeys forboth the audience and the actor. She has a unique voice that captures the

contemporary human spirit in a wonderful way.

--Eric Schaeffer, AD, Signature Theatre Company

"Allyson Currin has an ear for dialogue that is second to none. Hercharacters crackle with intelligence, perspective and off-beat humor.

Never predictable, never pat, her people (and animals) ring with truth!"

--Nick Olcott, director of UNLEASHED! at The JFK Center for the Performing

    Arts

"Ally Currin is one of DC's most successful playwrights--intelligent, hip androvocative. Take note New York, she's headed your way!"

--Blake Robison, AD, Round House Theatre

"I feel like Allyson is on the verge of a major critical and popular successthat will make all of us who have worked with her smile and say 'I knewher when...' She has it all: intelligence, verbal dexterity, the instincts of an

actress, the soul of a philosopher, and the playfulness of your favoritecompany."

--Jack Marshall, AD, American Century Theatre

"Fiercely poignant and funny. Haunting characters with an evocative edgeof humor."

FREE Screening of Oscar Nominated Documentary: Gasland

Can you light your water on fire? Lucky for us, DC isn't sitting on

top of a "Saudi Arabia of natural gas." Unfortunately for ourneighbors - and our watershed - the gas industry wants to use

millions of gallons of water and nearly 600 chemicals to drill for

natural gas. Hydraulic fracturing, or "fracking," poses serious

threats to our water and our health. Join us for a screening of

Gaslandat Landmark E Street Cinema on Thursday!

Don't miss this eye-opening and timely documentary on

the gas industry's irresponsibility, government inaction

and people whose lives have been changed forever.

The images of people lighting their tap water on fireare unforgettable, and the rivers that bubble with

natural gas are truly frightening. What's worse, the

people in the film are getting sick and it seems no one

is able to help. Attend this screening of Gaslandand

learn what you can do to save our water from fracking.

This Thursday, February 17th at 7:00 p.m., we are

joining forces with Earth Justice, Environmental

Working Group and the Natural Resources Defense

Council to bring Gaslandto Landmark E Street

Cinema. Come early to chat with us and learn what

you can do to make a difference.

Stick around after the film for a Q&A with director Josh Fox, actor/activist Mark

Ruffalo and a panel of experts including our very own Executive Director, Wenonah Hauter.

The phenomenon that was the Obama campaign was catapulted into office by the hopes and

dreams of people desperate for change. But over the last two years, the man who embodied so

much to so many has disappointed, even shocked, those who invested so much of themselves in his

At President Obamas inauguration, the country was at the beginning of a devastating economic

crisis. During his time in office, we have seen the rise of the Tea Party, the Republican Partys re-

taking of the House of Representatives, the shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, Arizonas racist SB

Curator's Office is pleased to present its third exhibition of works by internationallyacclaimed Canadian collaborative team Nicholas & Sheila Pye. Entitled Amend, theexhibition features 6 photographs from their latest body of work together. Thisexhibition coincides with the presentation of their dramatic three-channel video

installation, The Coronation, at The Phillips Collection, Washington, DC.

In Amend, the Pyes once again perform in front of the camera to create a series oftableaux that reflect the transition from their union to their separation from oneanother. The artists explore the powerful ties that unite people on different levels, even

during separation and departure. In these six works the artists delve into powerfulsubjects such as the death of a relationship, vulnerability, denial, acceptance andrelease with an ambiguous undercurrent of hopeful transformation and resurrection. ThePyes allude to their own relationship in a creative way, yet their work shares universalthemes about a union that is no longer tenable between people.

One trenchant aspect of this body of work is that the Pyes give the impression that theyare faking their deaths to take mortality, blame, and repentance into account. The title,Amend, refers to the modification of their relationship in search of something better andraises questions about what it means to get angry, to refuse, to love and lose, to acceptthat change and be forever altered.

The Pyes relentlessly blur the borders between their lives and their art as they tacklethe highly charged yet poetic issues that arise from their own relationship. But theirs isnot a self-absorbed biographical fascination. Rather, the relationship depicted in theirwork becomes emblematic of all things that can go wrong in a mutually dependent andsuffocating relationship. Their work joins a lineage of other artist couples -- such asMarina Abramovic & Ulay and Gilbert & George -- who use their relationship to explorethe nuanced tribulations of coupledom.

The Pyes' artistic output spans photography, film, performance, video, and installationwhile acknowledging the profound influences of surrealism in film, narrative conventionsin painting, 19th and early 20th century portraiture, and conceptual approaches tosubject matter. Given this well-versed theoretical blend, they avoid prosaicperformance art documentation preferring to transform their photographs and films intoworks that cleverly reconfigure art historic antecedents.

The Pyes have exhibited their work at museums such as The Hirshhorn Museum &Sculpture Garden, Washington, DC; The Phillips Collection, Washington, DC; Museum ofContemporary Art, San Diego, CA; The Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofa,Madrid, Spain; Galerie Nationale du Jeu de Paume, Paris, France; Incheon Women'sBiennial, Incheon, Korea; Kunsthallen Brnderigrden, Denmark; Meet Factory, Prague,Czech Republic; San Francisco Arts Commission Gallery, San Francisco, CA: Museum ofContemporary Canadian Art, Toronto, Canada; The Power Plant, Toronto, Canada; TheGlenbow Museum, Calgary, Canada; and the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, BritishColumbia, Canada.

Their work has been screened in numerous international film festivals such as theToronto International Film Festival, Canada; the Locarno International Film Festival,Switzerland; and Les Rencontres Internationales in Paris, Berlin, and Madrid. Their workhas also been exhibited internationally at numerous galleries including Curator's Office,Washington, DC; Begoa Malone Gallery, Madrid; Art Mur, Montreal; Artcore / FabriceMarcolini, Toronto; Alexia Goethe Gallery, London; Galerie Adler, Frankfurt; CapriceHorn Gallery, Berlin; Nettie Horn Gallery, London; RARE Gallery, New York; AngellGallery, Toronto; and Kasia Kay Art Projects, Chicago.

    Linn MEYERS, The Adjacent Possible

    Opening Reception

    Saturday, February 19, 6:30-8:30 p.m.

    G Fine Art

    1350 Florida Avenue NE

    Washington, DC 20002

G Fine Art is pleased to present Linn Meyers: The Adjacent Possible, February 19 March 26, 2011,

    opening reception February 19, 6:30 8:30.

Meyers drawings create a sense of unpredictable logic. Her lines whirl around into seemingly

complicated compositions, the marks slip and shiver, turning into intricate waves that subsequently settle

    into shimmering eddies. At close proximity the marks vibrate against each other with a magnetic tension;

with greater distance the drawings fold into a unified world, making references but never landing

hovering between place, time, object and experience.

Meyers site-specific wall drawings soar up over tall walls, cling to corners, and fill rooms. They demand

on the spot improvisation and a blast of focused, sustained energy. And yet, despite this intense

exertion, the works are generally temporary, lasting only a few weeks before being painted over. These

works explore and embrace our complicated relationship with time and ephemerality.

The broad variety in Meyers new work on view at G Fine Art is a reflection of her numerous projects in

recent years. In 2009 Meyers completed a Smithsonian Artist Research Fellowship on the subject of

Time. She has made site-specific works at The Phillips Collection in Washington DC (2010), Paris

Concret in Paris France (2010), The University of Maryland, College Park, MD, (2009) and most recently

at The Katzen Center at American University, (Jan 25-March 13, 2011.) Her next large project is coming

up this spring at The Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, CA.

Linn Meyers lives and works in Washington DC. Her work has been exhibited in museums and galleries

Fueled by ideals of democracy and human rights, Georgias 2003 Rose Revolution initiated a period of hope and

possibility unknown since the country gained independence following the collapse of the Soviet Union. This hope quickly

turned into disillusionment, however, as many of the initial reforms proved unsuccessful.

Lack of political freedom, a defunct parliament, high levels of unemployment, and tensions with Russia over disputedterritories have continued to plague democratic development, causing Georgia to resemble more of a semi-autocracy than

the mature democracy promised by the Rose revolutionaries. Georgia also remains no closer to fulfilling its aspirations of

joining the European Union and NATO than it was before citizens took to the streets.

Obsessively checking your smart phone. Responding to email while you're on a beach vacation. Taking a Sunday

morning conference call. You know the symptoms of 'digital dependency', and chances are good that you've experienced

some form of it. Carrying a smartphone or laptop is a great way to stay on top of your workload and to be available in case

of an emergency - but at what cost? William Powers' new book, Hamlet's Blackberry, critiques online life and examines

the dichotomy of technology as a convenience and technology as a burden. Join us to hear from Powers about how

historical greats such as Plato, Shakespeare, and Thoreau dealt with "disconnecting" from the technological advances in

their day. Powers will suggest remedies for digital dependency (like a digital sabbath), and he'll answer your questions on

how to strike a happy connectivity balance. This event is a collaboration of Google DC and the Family Online Safety

    Institute.

Thank you to EVERYONE for over two wonderful years of friendships,

business and most of all... memories!

We are sad to announce that Poppy will be closing it's door at the end ofthis month, February 27th.
