BMCCF Minutes Treasurer’s Report – 75 members and $5,801.55. Not bad.Car Show: Steve Donatone reports 48 cars registered so far, more posters are available from Steve, the signage is ready and things are progressing smoothly. One more meeting in October will probably be enough. Steve has sent an email to last year’s participants but needs volunteers to call some of them. Call Steve if you’re willing to take a few names and follow up with them.Carl Wilson says the PR is coming along nicely and that News 14 Carolina may also be there to report on our show. Mickey Finn will have a walk-through for staff after October 26th so we’ll all know our places. Or, rather, where we should be. Or, really, our stations. Oh, you know.John Adams has a couple of good ideas for T-shirts – should we have the photo method or the stylized drawing we’ve had in the past? The consensus was the photo one was clear and new-looking. If you can take a good photo of your car (against a very plain background so it stands out nicely), submit it to John before October 1st. If you can’t make it by then, please call John to make other arrangements. He needs at least 3-4 weeks advance notice for the printer.John Moore describes the trophies this year as “classy.” Clear, curved glass with our logo and Poplar Grove images, etc. They certainly sound nice. Better than those 5th Grade basketball ones anyway. Please return those forms you got from Caryl Finn asking for updated info. She’s in the process of updating the roster now.

The NC Holiday Flotilla Car Show is scheduled for the Saturday after Thanksgiving (11-26) from 10 to 3 in Wrightsville Beach Park. The award is a nice wooden plaque in the shape of NC (with a star marking our fair town). Edie Cutler has entry forms.

Elections are coming up in November. As Steve Donatone, Karen Burr and Terry Le Count de Monday Smith are staying on in their positions, the only one open is for President. We tried to make Edie stay but she graciously declined.

Tom Roberson reminded us of the Second Annual End of Summer Get Together at the Donatone’s this Saturday – RSVP and bring a side and what you want to drink. The Hare and Hounds Rally is postponed – maybe later? The Tri Club Lunch in Myrtle Beach is this Saturday – Grand Strand MC, Charleston MC and we will be there – Tom is looking for club stuff to sell/exchange – got any you want to donate? Check his email for directions, time, etc. Mickey said the night rally was an “absolute blast” – all of us who missed it want another. Cristen, how about it?

Thanks to James Snyder and Temptations for donating to the people who raised that huge American flag at the corner of Market and Kerr.

Meeting adjourned at 7:35. Respectfully submitted, Karen Burr, Secretary

Message from our Car Show Chairman:Mr Steven Donatone

It is amazing how quickly time passes; the months have flown by and we are now just a little over 30 days away from our 2011 car show at Poplar Grove Plantation.

A lot of people have worked diligently over the passing months to make the show as successful as possible, especially given the economic climate we have today. If you have not yet registered you can find a registration form on our website; the form contains all the information you need. If you intend to enter a car, now is definitely the time to do it. A number of items must be ordered in the next couple of weeks and it would be helpful to have a good idea of how many cars will be in attendance.

Our club enjoys the benefit of having members who collectively see it as much as a social club as a car club; we enjoy each other as much as we do the various cars. Accordingly, I ask that everyone keep that in mind as we engage in various activities throughout the year; by that I mean make the effort to participate in as many of those activities as you reasonably can and offer assistance to those who are leading the effort for any particular event. That is what friends do and that is what gives life to clubs such as ours; it isn’t the vehicles, it is the people.

I hope to see you at the show even if you do not have a car to enter; as is the case each year there will be a number of very interesting cars to view and even more interesting people to meet. It is no secret that car people are indeed a different breed bordering on a different species!

Watkins Glen Race ReportBy John Foster

Joanne & I made our 25th annual pilgrimage to the US Vintage Grand Prix Races at Watkins Glen Track in early Sept. 2011.We were at the inaugural event in 1986 when entry was free to any sports car with a driver & passenger who entered the Car Show. The next year, entry was $5.00 per car. It has grown steadily over the years for sure. This year at the Glen, the featured Marque was Datsun/Nissan, so there was a wide variety of everything to a partially restored1961 Fairlady to plenty of 1600 Roadsters , 240Z, B-210 and 510’s lined up on the grass at Franklin Street Park. Bob Sharp of Bob Sharp Racing was the Grand Marshal for the weekend. He and his organization won numerous National Titles racing 510, 240Z , see image # 0184 thru 280Z’s. A large part of Sharp’s success was the result of our BMCCF past member, Pete Mullen who lives in Southport, NC. Pete was the Chief Engineer for Bob Sharp Racing during those heady years and personally knew the late, great Paul Neuman , as Pete was instrumental in preparing not only Pauls’ but all of Sharp’s race cars. There is no doubt that Bob Sharp Racing would not be the legend they are without the efforts of Pete Mullen. Here is a brief re-cap of events on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.Friday, 9-9-2011:We arrived in downtown Watkins Glen about 1:00PM to attend the invitation only, Concours Car Show; as in past years, there was a wide variety of beautifully restored sports cars lined up to view & talk to their owners. Later in the afternoon, at 4:30 PM close to 150 historic race cars arrived with a thunderous sound from the track and lined both sides of the main street in downtown Watkins Glen. These same cars we would see racing on Saturday & Sunday at the track. It is great to stroll along getting a close-up view of the cars and talking to the drivers/owners. At 6:30 PM, the first group of cars drive the original 6.6 mile course as it was in 1948, passing the Stone Bridge and eventually Milliken's Corner. As in the

past, there were hay bales setup along the course for spectators to sit on and view the cars. Milliken's Corner was named for Bill Milliken who overturned his car while racing in 1948 at the inaugural race thru the streets, Bill Milliken, who is 100 years young, was at the re-enactment and discussed the mishap. Saturday, 9-10-2011A total of over 300 different cars registered for the weekend. We sat in our usual seats in the Red/White/Blue grandstands in between turns #1 and #2. It was a little overcast and breezy for the start of qualifying, but the sun came out and it was a nice 74 degrees for all the groups of race cars. The first event was a 90 minute Enduro with mixed classes. There were several spins and “off-track” events. One car encountered the guard-rail and smashed the front end, but no-one was hurt. At noon, there was a Parade Lap of about 175+ cars that had entered the car show. There was also a Parade Lap of about 90 Porsche’s; everything from “bathtub” models to Cayman S. More qualifying and racing for all the different class cars followed. At 4:30 PM, the Collier Cup Race for only MG’s was run with about 50 cars of all years/models. See Image # 0187 for the MG Collier Cup Trophy. Sunday, 9-11-2011We arrived at the track to a partly cloudy day and at there was another 90 minute Enduro in progress featuring race cars such as a 1935 Alfa Romeo, Lola , Ford GT-40, Porsche 911, 914 and 356’s, Datsun 240Z’s & 510’s and Lotus Super 7’s & 11’s, MGB’s and even a Ford Cortina. While we were in the Paddock area during the noon hour, we noticed a small group of Ford GT-40’s and Shelby Cobra’s that took to the track for a Parade Lap. After about ½ hour, we proceeded back to the Red/White/Blue grandstands and noticed a large gathering of emergency vehicles at Turn #1. It seems a Shelby Cobra on the parade lap, smashed straight into the tire wall at high speed coming down the front straight. There were no brake or skid marks on the track indicating an effort to slow the car. I heard that the driver suffered some type of stroke/seizure, etc. and blacked out. See images # 0210 and 0215. Racing was delayed for about 40 minutes and I heard no other information about the driver. The Datsun/Nissan feature race had about 25 cars and car #75 Paul Neuman’s old 280Z , see image # 018was the winner. The following race was Group 7: Lola’s, Swift’s, Chevron’s, March’s and McLaren’s. Next was Group 3 and 4A which featured TR-4’s, MGA’s, Alfa Romeo Duetto’s and TR-6’s. The Group 5 race included cars such as a Lola T-70, Lotus 23B’s, Ford GT-40 and Elva’s. The Group 1 (MG Midget, Bugeye Sprite, Ginetta G15, Austin Mini Cooper and Ford Anglia 105) cars completed their race followed by other vintage class racing. At about 4:15 PM, very dark storm clouds with lightning appeared on the horizon along light rain. The last race

scheduled was Group 2 at 4:30 PM, but the track closed down and we headed back to our cottage on Keuka Lake.

For Joanne & I, it was another great race weekend and we look forward to 2012 at the Glen.

It’s safe to say everyone had a great time - the monsoons managed to hold off & we befriended some really nice people. Donna Schaefer won the 50/50 making hubby a very happy man - hope she shares.... The pub underestimated the persistence of the British motoring community and cut back on serving staff. Food was great, but getting our orders in was somewhat problematic. As you can see John Williamson found the answer - gotta love that guy...

• From Karen Burr:

As you may know, I have been an active supporter of the Coastal Therapeutic Riding Program since last August. I have never found an organization that affects its students, their families and their caregivers - and me – in such a positive way. Our special needs riders respond immediately to the physical exercise and the cause and effect interaction with the horses. We have impacted the lives of hundreds of special needs children and adults for more than a decade.

CTRP keeps its overhead costs to a bare minimum and most of the assistants are volunteers, including myself. However, the upkeep of our six horses is approximately $3000 per month. The lesson charge

of $35 does not cover our costs and many of our students cannot afford

even that amount. Therefore, we must ask for donations from the community and from our friends to be able to continue to provide lessons to our students.

For more information about equine-assisted therapy, check out our website at coastalriding.org. Star News has run two good articles recently, June 12th and July 17th – you can read them on Star News Online.

I always leave a lesson feeling that I have improved someone’s life and thankful that I was able to help. If you can help with a donation, we promise that every dollar will be put to good use. Our mailing address is CTRP, 3507 North Kerr Avenue, Wilmington, NC 28405. CTRP is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization and your gift is tax deductible.

Thanks very much,Karen Burr

• From Peter Burr - you can get non-ethanol mid grade gasoline at the BP station in Ogden on Market Street.

• From John Adams - this is a really cool video of the ultimate “man cave” community. Check it out: http://bcove.me/a52ky1yi

• From Howard Bollinger - he’ll be in Gainesville Ga. for the North Georgia Jaguar Club Concours. He got a 9.992 score at the Nations Capitol Jag Concours this past weekend. A good score in Ga. should puts him in good standing for national ranking.

• Again from Jennifer Lancaster - Antique Motor Club has invited us to join them on October 9th at RiverFest - 9:00AM til about 4:00PM. Meet at the base of Market Street.

• Wanted - looking for something different and interesting to restore, desire a MG/C call Frank at 910.279.0432 This was a result of making calls for our Brits at the Plantation Show.
