Much has been written about the blurring
of boundaries between commercial and public
environments: department stores becoming
more like museums; airports functioningequally as shopping malls, and art galleries
being visited for their restaurants.
The latest crossover environment is surely
the workplace. On first impression, some
of the best examples could be mistaken for
art galleries or even cool bars. Art has been
in the corporate atrium since the 1970s,
but now the best-designed workplaces must
contain specially commissioned, site-specific
pieces, which add up to a bespoke environment
that is not just a corporate investment, but
contributes to expounding the company’s brand.
Executive director of Bene, Thomas Bene,
goes as far as to say that ‘the office is where
corporate culture crystallises.’ Bene was
speaking with Blueprint product editor, Gian
Luca Amadei, who over the page writes about
current developments in workplace and
furniture design.
Amadei describes how designers and their
corporate clients are beginning to focus more
on the human scale and atmosphere of offices,
and not just on technology and ergonomics. On the following pages you will find some good
examples of this development, many of which
will be on show at Orgatec in Cologne
(21-25 October).
Furniture that would once have been
regarded as suitable for the home or a leisure
environment is now appearing in the office,
as the human values of creativity and play are
emphasised in the search for new ideas. All
of this makes the subject of office furniture,
that was once the dull relation in the design
family, a whole lot more interesting.

The Vitra Design Museum in Germany,is currently celebrating the centenary ofthe ground-breaking American furniture
designer George Nelson. During hiscareer as a furniture designer, Nelsondeveloped and introduced the concept ofthe work station and ‘L’ shaped workdesk to the world, furniture which hasradically revolutionised the office.
Nelson for many years collaboratedclosely with furniture companyHerman Miller. At one point he evenbrought in Italian designer EttoreSottsass to work at Nelson’s officebefore the former returned to Italy andstarted his collaboration with anotherinnovator of the office environment:
the Italian electronic company Olivetti.

It was in 1969 that Sottsass designed, with British industrial designer Perry A.King, the iconic Valentine; a portable
typewriter made of bright red plastic, which introduced pop-culture to theoffice environment.
A number of innovations thatNelson and Sottsass brought to theoffice environment, have stood the testof time, and moved the design of officeenvironments beyond a container forwork activity. They have transformedoffices into communication hubs, inwhich people are not simply carrying outrepetitive tasks, but are also socialisingand networking. ‘Work and leisure isno longer the same as it used to be,’ saysHanns-Peter Cohn CEO at Vitra, ‘we are

not just getting money to survive, todaythe job is a core of our life, to perform ina team and to have fun to perform.’
As office space has become moreexpensive, its use has to be maximisedand made flexible, as well as sculptedto provide a comfortable environment. For this reason, office design has alsobecome closely interconnected with thescience of ergonomics and thedevelopment of new technologicalmaterials, to create comfortable
furniture for the office. Although attimes this appears to engage more withthe rational and less with theemotional.
However looking at recentlycompleted projects (in these andfollowing pages), it is clear that eventhe corporations with the most rigidcorporate structures are aspiring to beperceived as creative rather than justefficient. They want to be seen astransparent rather than enclosed.

Traditionally this type of messagewould have been confined to the mostpublic areas of the office: the reception. This is no longer the case. Now thisimage of the corporation as creative placeis carried throughout the whole officespace. ‘The office is where corporateculture crystallises. It is where acompany’s identity manifests itself andwhere company values and brand mes-sages are translated and experienced in aspatial dimension,’ says Thomas Beneexecutive director at Austrian officefurniture company Bene.
This is also evident in the newoffices for the flagship store of Italiancompany Rimadesio in which efficiencyis expreessed by materials such as glassand steel. In contrast the officesdesigned for Swiss company Spectraseis, applies the Net ’n’ Nest conceptdesigned for Vitra by the French duoRonan & Erwan Bouroullec. Their uniqueuse of colour and the creation of semi-enclosed office spaces could be identifiedas a new interpretation of GeorgeNelson’s legacy, blurring private andpublic in the office space.

Sedus is one of Europe’s leading manufacturers of
high quality office furniture. Its conference seating,
break out furniture and office furniture systems are
ideal for creating the complete office environment
combining functionality and ergonomics with
top-quality materials and award-winning designs.
Invitation
Sedus’ Invitation product features a complete
portfolio of elements that include a comprehensive
bench programme, individual workstations and
meeting tables. At the heart of the system is the
characteristic swept leg detail that allows users to
move the length of the bench without any
obtrusive interruptions. The leg is attached to the
twin rail support beams underneath allowing the
product to be assembled and reconfigured easily.
There are two depths of bench, one with a high
capacity central cable dump. Both feature the
aluminium toolrail at the rear of the top that allows
accessories such as screens, monitor arms and
lighting to be mounted. On the deeper version there
are various storage modules that, as with all the
desk top elements, are adaptable without the use of
any tools; these allow users to create a truly flexible
and personalised work space. Ranges of mobile
components include sit/stand tables and pedestals
with cushion tops. There is also a mobile personal
storage programme that can provide hot deskingsolutions for modern shared work applications. The
single standalone desks can form management or
individual workstations with returns or meeting
end elements and feature the same leg shape. To
complete the solution is a full range of
complementary storage units that can feature the
aluminium tool rail that allows the accessories to
be stored within close proximity to the workplace.
Choices of finishes complete the diversity of
product with tops in laminates, veneers and
linoleum, acoustic baffle screens or Plexiglas and
aluminium leg detail powder coated or polished.

Bene's renown as one of Europe's foremost office
furniture suppliers is the result of its holistic
approach to developing appropriate products and
solutions for different workplace environments.
Not only does Bene offer highly effective systems,
its ability to create bespoke solutions for individual
projects ensures its appeal for architects and
designers. Bene's award-winning design team
consistently develops innovative office systems
that anticipate changing workplace dynamics.
Recently the versatile P2 management system
demonstrates a unified concept where desks,
shelves and cabinets integrated into Bene's wall
elements unite to create a single identity. It is an
elegant synthesis between furniture and
architecture that responds to contemporary design
trends for clean lines and cubic shapes.
Orgatec heralds the launch of the "Filo" meeting
table system designed by Eoos, whose design
inspired the eponymous chair line. This elegant
new table line is suited for large (linear) set-ups and
smaller, more compact solutions.
With the increasing focus on positiveenvironmental practice, Bene fulfils, indeed
exceeds, the standards that many companies seek.
Sustainable practice is entrenched in Bene's design
and manufacturing as much as its corporate
culture. Bene's extensive range includes
management and back office systems, sophisticated
conference and meeting furniture, and elegant
partitioning systems. Additionally, B-Loose
compelements the core range with loose furniture
from partners such as Fritz Hansen, Walter Knoll
and Wilkahn. Bene provides a single source that
achieves unique and effective office environments.

With our range of office furniture, it’s the things
you don’t get that make the difference.
Specifying office furniture for major projects can be
a tricky business. Even when working with known
and trusted suppliers, you can’t always be 100%
sure of the performance you’re going to get. With
Techo, at least you know what you’re not going to
get. No hidden costs. When we take on a project
with our partners, specifications, delivery schedules
and costs are agreed right from the start. What you
agree is what you’ll get. What you won’t get are any
nasty surprises. No late deliveries. The Czechs have
a worldwide reputation for solid engineering as well
as individual and innovative design. Our
manufacturing workforce is also blessed with a
work ethic that is the envy of many companies. On
time delivery is very much part of that ethic.
No shortage of after-sales service. Problems are a
fact of life. And, when they do occur, that’s when
your choice of supplier is really put to the test. At
Techo, the buck stops with me. Call me and I’ll getit sorted. No excuses. No need for them. Recently, a
major customer carried out their own research of
suppliers they’d worked with as part of what they
called their ‘Perfect Delivery Programme’. Techo
scored 98% – substantially above the rest.
Furthermore, in another independent survey of
Office Furniture Specifiers who had worked with
Techo, they agreed it was a postitive experience and
they’d be happy to work with us again. Many of
them have. And still do. That sort of
recommendation is something else you don’t get
every day.
