A once-in-a-lifetime project for BakerTriangle. Innovative building techniques were used throughout this facility. BIM was integral in the process and vision of Morphosis architects, as BakerTriangle was brought in early in the planning for input and collaboration.

Many of the Presidents discussed the strong Texas

economy and backlog. So, I’m sure many of you are asking: how will the recent election effect our work and families? We have a government led by Obama that is anti-business and over regulates. We now know what to expect and will have to deal with the

consequences. We have to move on, work harder and smarter.

We will adapt, make the necessary changes and thrive, not just survive. We have the best people, the best teams and we work for the best general contractors, a select list of customers. We are blessed.

Thank you, our employees and partners for all that you do. Your hard work, day in and day out helpsus to be profi table despite this economy. You have made us the leading drywall, acoustical and plastercontractor in the southwest. We have changed dramatically in the last three years. BIM, IPD, PODS, prefabrication, iPads, Total Station layout - who would have guessed this would be part of our normal operations fi ve years ago? We have even more changes ahead, younger employees bring new ideas, more technical ways to build a project that would not have been possible a few years ago.

We can resist or we can adapt. I choose to adapt, to accept the innovation. We need to embrace the changes and fi nd better, faster and safer ways to build for our customers.

As a certifi able “old guy”, it’s hard not to stay with what brought you success for the last forty years, butsometimes you need to try something new. About the time we think we have it fi gured out, a new and

better idea comes along. So the next time one of our younger employees approaches you with an ideaand says, “why don’t we try this?”; avoid the tendency to say - “we tried it, it doesn’t work”. It’s a new day, what didn’t work for us may work for them, the better way twenty years ago may not be the best waytomorrow.

I am looking forward to the exciting years ahead of us!

We have to change. “By changing nothing, nothing changes.” ~ Tony Robbins

The Fort Worth offi ce is gearing up for the

holidays and the new-year. Hopefully, we will continue to see a strong Texas economy and the construction industry will prosper. We have seen a steady increase in the number of jobs bid and the quality of

those jobs here in the 4th quarter.

I would like to welcome Wendy McGinnis and Frank Gamez to our team this year. Wendy serves as our offi ce manager, and Frank will be assisting us in estimating.

Peter and Frank continue to keep good jobs in the backlog. The additions that we have made in the Fort Worth offi ce this past year has helped us to serve our core customer group better. We have positioned ourselves to be a stronger specialty contractor with the team we have in place. Going forward I feel confi dent that this offi ce will succeed and we will continue to grow.

Our teams in the fi eld continue to deliver our projects with quality and safety as their foremost concern. Warren Pettie was the foreman on the recently completed River Crest

Country Club Additions and Renovations with Hill & Wilkinson Construction. River Crest is Fort Worth’s oldest country club and now has one of the nicest club houses as well. Jorge Castillo just wrapped up AV Cato Elementary School with Adolfson and Peterson. The new school features specialty PVC Rulon Ceilings installed by BakerTriangle.

Jobs in progress: Baylor Grapevine New Patient Tower with Medco Construction. Steve Press is project manager for both EIFS and drywall trades. Hurst Euless Bedford ISD Career Technical Education Building with Lee Lewis Construction. This school will feature metal column covers, open grid 360 radius ceiling clouds, and acoustical wall panels installed by Baker. Carroll Administration Building with Sedalco. Arborlawn United Methodist Church with Steele Freeman.

Jobs completed: Aquilla ISD with Baird Williams Construction, Moritz Chevy Service with Binks Construction and Cooks Children’s Medical Offi ce Building and Cook Children’s Medical Center North Bed Tower with Linbeck.

As I sit here writing this article about our news

in San Antonio, I can’t help but think about how blessed we are to live in Texas and enjoy a strong construction atmosphere. Few of us have experienced the diffi cult times that we have been going through over the last few years

and hopefully our leaders in government will realize the importance of small businesses and the genesis of job creation. I hope our country can move forward and start creating jobs and being more fi scally responsible. We cannot continue on the same path that we have over the last four years. Our government needs to be held accountable and run like a business with a balanced budget.

That is exactly what we have done at BakerTriangle over the last few years. We have made cuts, streamlined operations and focused on effi ciencies. These changes have not all been easy, but they have enabled us to maintain our strength and position in the markets that we serve. We are prepared to make adjustments and move with the economy as we start to see improvements. We continue to try to improve by educating our employees in the various aspects of our business.

Some of the current projects that we are involved in are: Lackland AFB ACC Phase 1 with JE Dunn, with Foreman Ricardo Martinez, UHS Downtown with Bartlett Cocke is being wrapped up by Foreman Keith Dimmick, South SA ISD Classroom addition with Joeris, with Foreman Ruben Mendoza Cielo Vista Elementary School with Bartlett Cocke run by Foreman Doyle Dancer, Trinity University Phase 3 with Vaughn, run by

Foremen Joe Castillo and Luis Castillo, Tobin Performing Arts Center with Linbeck/Zachry, being run by Foreman Roger Warman, South Flores Apts. with Swinerton being run by plaster Foreman Oscar Montalbo, BAMC with Clark/Hunt is in the fi nal phase of wrapping up with Foreman Ray Balandran, and various smaller projects are ongoing as well, and we just wrapped up our fi rst POD project with Linbeck Construction for Texas A&M. Marco Ortiz was the Foreman overseeing the fabrication.

I would like to welcome Francisco Franco to the team Francisco is a Project Manager on the wet side. I also would like to welcome Paul Mendoza as a drywall Foreman to our team. Paul is the brother of longtime employee Ruben Mendoza. We continue to work safe on the projects and it shows in our EMR. I would like to thank all of you who go out and put forth the efforts that you do everyday to make BakerTriangle the great company that it is. Through all of your continued efforts in the fi eld and the offi ce, we will make it through this diffi cult time and come out on top. Thanks and here’s looking forward to a great 2013!

As we all know, we are quickly coming to the end of another

year. The Texas market continues to outperform the rest of the Nation. However, margins are still way to low. Hopefully, now that the election season has passed we will see some stabilization in the economy and Texas will remain strong and continue its pattern of

growth.

I want to thank all of the BakerTriangle employees that have busted their rears to complete some of the toughest fast track projects we have been involved with in a long time. I would like to recognize a few of these projects that we are completing on time and under budget. First off, the F-1 Race Track with Austin Commercial is winding down. This has been a great project not only for Baker Drywall but for Triangle Plastering as well. Stephen Ryan and team completed the three-story Pit Building on time and with a high quality level of work. That team went on to start and complete the Turn 3 and 16 Towers ahead of schedule. Curtis Bell and Carlos Delgadillo finished the 250’ Observation Tower. Baker had both night and day crews working in order to expedite the schedule. Vernon Hampton and team did a fantastic job overseeing the wet side for Triangle on all of the F-1 projects. Great job on what will soon be an iconic feature here in Austin. Another great project was Olsen Field at Texas A&M with Skanska. Foreman Jesus Valdez did an outstanding job on this fast track project. Foreman Bill Bradberry and crew are winding down on the University of Texas Dell Computer Science Hall project with Austin Commercial. They are busy putting the finishing touches on these two seven-story buildings which have very high end acoustical, wood, and metal ceilings. Foreman Robert Lawrence and crew are diligently trying to complete the three-story addition to the Dell Children’s Hospital with Beck Construction. Another fast track project that was completed under budget and within a tight schedule was the Elsa England Elementary School with Balfour Beauty. Foreman Richard Groves and crew put in a tremendous effort by working long hours and weekends to help get the school open in time for the school year. The ESPN Longhorn Network project with Flintco Construction was run by Jorge Vielma

and crew. They did a fantastic job building this project with a very high end finish and a very aggressive schedule. Tony Kelly and Rafael Dianas completed the fast track remodel of HEB # 26 with SpawGlass Construction. Phillip Heermans did great work on the two Cedar Park Field OPS buildings with SpawGlass.

I would like to identify some of the up and coming players that have been added to our Austin Office. Amy Taylor has moved into estimating and has already won several projects. I would like to welcome Suzette Read on board. She has stepped into Amy’s previous position as Project Administrator and has been a great asset to our team. Carlos Torres has been promoted to Warehouse Manager and is doing a great job. I would also like to welcome back foreman Phillip Heermans, foremen Robert and Jimmy Lawrence, Jesus Valdez, and the one and only Tony Skippy Kelly.

Up and coming Projects: ACC Hays Campus (Flintco), Travis Middle School Temple ISD (American Constructors), Mueller Market District (Harvey-Cleary), ACC Callaway (Harvey-Cleary), Don Hewlett Chevrolet (Chasco Construction), and UT Jester Core Dining (Harvey-Cleary).

Austin Announcements: Congratulations to Jared Smith and Lacy Faust on their marriage. Congratulations on the birth of another baby girl for Jesus and Claudia Valdez and to Stephen and Joni Ryan on the birth of their baby boy, James Lucus, weighing in at 8 pounds 7 ounces.

What a year it has been, as we near the end of the year it

is hard to believe it is almost over. We have been able to weather the economic downturn from last year and secure advantageous work this year. Our backlog looks much stronger thru the 1st half of 2013 and we have continued to focus on our core customer’s needs thru

prefab and the use of BIM, while looking for opportunities wherever they may be. We have seen the continued use of the total station layout and even IPAD’s on the jobsite for drawings, RFI’s, QAQC and safety updates. We continue to focus on training both in the field and the office to improve in all areas.

The year started with a bang in February with Bobby Morris, Jim Hatch and Chris Gabel securing the new University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas with Hunt Construction. Matt Clark and Pablo Reyna and their crews are handling this mammoth hospital project. Bobby Morris & Chris Gabel also landed the Saint Francis TEC Tower Expansion and Renovation, David Long with Kade Sparling, Juan Esquivel and crew are working on this mega hospital project in Tulsa, Oklahoma. That same month Jim Hatch and Chris Gabel secured the UTD Arts & Technology building in Richardson with Hunt Construction. Jeff Schilling and Joe Bailey are working on this higher educational facility. Tom Wisdom and Chris Gabel secured the SMU Residential Commons with BECK, and Kyle Caviness and Monty Henderson are working on this new housing facility at the SMU Campus. Rex Van Natta secured Bush/Renner Methodist Hospital with Rogers-O’Brien Construction and we will start prefab of bathroom pods in January of 2013. Jorge Fuentes will be in charge of this large hospital addition and renovation in Richardson, Texas. Rex also secured the SMU Moody Coliseum Renovation with Rogers-O’Brien Construction that will start in March of 2013. Preston Pressley secured the New Park Place Lexus dealership in Plano with Hill & Wilkinson Construction that will start in January 2013. Tony Bailey, Mark Bowlby and crew have continued to progress on the new Parkland Hospital with two siding the walls starting an expected completion date of our work in September of 2013.

BakerTriangle was awarded the 2012 Safety Excellence

Award from TEXO. This award was won by an achievement of One Million man hours with no lost time for the Dallas Offi ce. This makes 2 years in a row that we have received this award and it is a true testament to the commitment we all have to safety and our desire to improve. I want to thank each one of you for your continued commitment to safety.

I would to welcome Jeff Schilling he started in January as a Sr. PM. James Sockwell as our new Safety Director. James brings great experience and a keen eye for detail to the safety director position. Ezequiel Perez has displayed great leadership in Safety and has move been moved into the estimating department. Nathan Wright has joined us from Texas A&M Commerce and is helping as a project engineer at the new UTSW Hospital. We would also like to welcome the new BakerTriangle receptionist, Lillian Gonzalez.

This year we have completed work on the Hi Line Project with Rogers-O’Brien, Eagle Mountain High School with Balfour Beatty Educational, Sammons Collins Hospital renovation with MEDCO Construction, Paragon Outlets in Grand Prairie with White Construction. We are fi nishing the George Bush Library with Manhattan Construction at the SMU Campus. Lastly, we are putting the fi nishing touches on the Museum of Nature and Science with Balfour Beatty Construction, this one of a kind project has already started to receive awards and is again showing the artistry and craftsmanship of the men and women that work at BakerTriangle.

As we move into our 4th year of involvement with Virtual

Design and Construction, it’s hard to believe how far we’ve come in such a short amount of time. Our use of technology has allowed us to construct some very complex projects which would have seemed impossible in the past. From the Perot Museum of Nature and Science in Dallas,

to the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts in San Antonio, we are constantly exploring ways to help our people build more effi ciently and safely.

It seems like almost every project we are awarded these days has some sort of BIM requirement. Dante Gamez is currently modeling and coordinating our scope of work on Exxon Mobil project in north Houston and William Tang is working on several of our larger Dallas projects. More and more general contractors are seeing the benefi t of bringing in their wall and ceiling contractors early to help minimize fi eld problems and save time through the use of BIM.

In the past several years, we’ve seen and increased interest in pre-fabrication. The ability to begin construc-tion on certain pieces of the building before the structure is complete decreases schedule durations and provides a higher quality product. We are able to create these pre-

fabricated items virtually to ensure a seamless integra-tion with other trades. From patient room headwalls to complete bathroom units, BakerTriangle is at the fore-front of pre-fabrication.

We are very excited to see what new technologies and innovations are around the corner and how we can make use of them as a wall and ceiling contractor.

Memorable Milestone

Five years ago, the 2007 Blueline featured an article about Jerry Smith and his 30 year milestone with BakerTriangle titled, ‘30

Years of Change’. Five years later it is with pleasure we announce Jerry’s 35 year milestone with BakerTriangle! Jerry has been managing the Austin offi ce for 17 years and has seen plenty of change in that time period. During that time period Jerry and his team have completed such prestigious projects as: LBJ Library Auditorium, Th e Long Center for the Performing Arts, W Hotel - Austin, and the latest, F1 Austin. BakerTriangle CEO Steve Baker writes, “Jerry Smith is the best example of the BakerTriangle culture of opportunity. Jerry has been with the company for 35 years and is the picture of our career ladder. He started as a carpenter in the fi eld, moving up to one of our top foremen, then trained as an estimator aft er his 40 hour week. Jerry had experience as a safety director and project manager before opening our fi rst branch offi ce in Virginia. Jerry is now an Owner/Partner in BakerTriangle and serves as President of Baker Drywall, Austin. He was recently named to the AWCI Board of Directors. I consider Jerry a great friend, trusted partner and a valuable member of the Baker Triangle team. Th ank you, Jerry, for 35 years of service!”

Bob Baker began working in the plastering business in 1947. As a 20 year old, fresh out of the military service, Bob was not afraid of work, and he found it with his brother-in-law at Storbeck and Gregory, a Dallas plastering contractor. Bob began working as a laborer hauling plaster mud in a multi-story Shreveport hospital. From that point, he never looked back. This year the South Central Wall, Ceiling and Plaster Association (SCWCPA) awarded Bob Baker the Lifetime Achievement Award posthumously. Bob passed away in October of 2011 just a few months prior to the convention. Being a man of few words, if he was there he probably would have said “thanks, I enjoyed working and innovating in this industry for over 60 years!”.

This year the convention was held at the Hyatt Hill Country Resort in San Antonio. At the awards ceremony

BakerTriangle also received an award for the San Antonio Military Medical Center (SAMMC) project. SAMMC won the the Pinnacle Award for the best-of-the-best projects submitted for the 2012 SCWCPA Design Awards competition.Bryan Craft was the Project Manager on SAMMC, a project that at one point had over 240 BakerTriangle personnel working on site. SAMMC required the “best of the best” to complete this enormous project in a 24 month schedule. Also, San Antonio President Mike Sireno won the top prize for his marksmanship in the annual Clay Shoot competition.

Industry Convention Very Awarding

Michael Vickery was awarded for his service as immediate past president. Michael’s term spanned from 2011 to 2012. “My tenure as president was focused on advancing SCWCPA as the go-to industry standard for information to all things pertaining to walls & ceilings for the architectural, general contracting, consultants, local building offi cials and the applicator network”, stated Michael. During his term the board put in place the fi rst ever independent third party White Paper to be published in 2013 – 2015 for the AEC community, and also started and extended a college scholarship program to benefi t any children and grandchildren of our membership. To date, they have given over $20,000 in scholarships. Michael becomes the second BakerTriangle employee to serve as president, Brad Baker was president in 1994-1995.

On Friday May 11, 124 golfers turned out for the 5th Annual BakerTriangle Golf Tournament. This year $17,000 were raised for the Wounded Warrior Project. One program at WWP is to ”ensure injured service members stay connected with one another, WWP has both a peer mentoring and robust Alumni program. Additionally, the Policy &

Government affairs program ensures injured warriors and their families have a voice in local and national advocacy and legislative issues”. Once again golfers and sponsors gathered at the beautiful Silverhorn Golf Club and were greeted by beautiful weather

and a fun-fi lled day of golf, food and awards. Hill Country Materials. Total Wall and L&W Supply were major sponsors for 2012.

15th Annual DPRC Golf Classic

The relationship between BakerTriangle and the Dallas Pregnancy Resource Center (DPRC)

began over 15 years ago. BakerTriangle began looking for a new charity for our benefi t golf tournament and some mutual relationships led us to the DPRC and its ministry to families in crisis. In 2006 Raymond Construction was added as a title sponsor bringing Charles Raymond and his team as a vital partner and generous contributor. Th roughout the span of the tournament, including totals from the 2012 tournament, almost $600,000 has been donated to the DPRC. Th ese funds have been used by the DPRC to provide resources to the families in crisis. Executive Director Mary Jayne Fogerty stated, “Your partnership is a great encouragement to us and allows the DPRC to continue helping women and their partners in a variety of ways who are experiencing unplanned pregnancy.” Most of our tournament sponsors have been with us every year and without their generosity we would never have made this event the success it has become. Throughout each of our 15 years we have been priviledged to have the commitment of Jim Hollis as our tournament chair. Jim is a relentless fi ghter for the cause of the DPRC, and he puts his heart and soul into each new tournament.
